Can Jerry Saltz Save the Art World and Dan Colen’s Pigeons?

A suite of four canvases filled with nothing but pigeon droppings by Dan Colen, another popular American artist, also brought a strong price. David Mugrabi, a New York art dealer, bought the work for $545,000, in the middle of its $400,000 to $600,000 estimate.

A screenshot of the auction results for Dan Colen’s Untitled, 2006-07
I didn’t come across this bit of news while actually reading the New York Times. It was shared on Facebook by a painter friend who posted it along with only the briefest commentary: “The art market, jesus.”

I feel for Carol Vogel who has to report auction results like this one with a straight face. By the way Carol, there were five pigeon shit covered canvases in the lot, not four, so maybe editorial oversight at the New York Times isn’t what it used to be. Is a correction forthcoming?

The real commentary these days happens on blogs and social media sites — Facebook and Twitter — where there are no editors to vet content for accuracy and no advertisers (i.e. auction houses or art dealers) who might be offended. I certainly enjoy being able to say what I think about art here on The Huffington Post where the advertisers for laser eye-bag removal haven’t yet objected to anything I have said.

At any rate, the news of this $545k birddoggle got 49 shares just on my friend’s page and when I re-posted it there were some pretty good quips. “Well…it’s not bullshit” was one.

The way I understand Colen’s “success” is that it is a social phenomenon, not an aesthetic one. For decades now one of the most common accolades given to artists has been that he or she is “pushing boundaries.” Never mind that there are almost no boundaries left: if you can find one — for example, the idea that art shouldn’t just be pigeon poop — then you have a created a binary situation. There are going to be those who are appalled and who shake their head at how awful your art is and there are going to be those that say “Hey, this is amazing.” In a 2010 interview Colen spelled this situation out quite clearly:

“It’s such a paradox. You come from this place where you want fame; you don’t want to be bourgeois, but you want to be successful. You want to be accepted, but you also want to be going against the grain. You want to be on the outside, but you want to be on the inside.”

Exactly. if your reaction to Colen’s “Untitled” is “Ewww… I wonder if his canvases could transmit ocular histoplasmosis?” you are bourgeois. Well, or you are an art restorer worried that you may be called to the Hamptons to re-glue some wayward shit onto one of these next season…

Signs are now being put up urging people not to feed birds, as bread, seeds and other treats have been attracting vermin.

Cheshire West and Chester Council says it has received numerous complaints about rats, mice and bird droppings around homes, parks and paths, mainly in the canalside area.

As well as the signs, community safety wardens will also patrol certain areas and could even hand out £75 littering fines to people feeding birds.

Councillor Bob Rudd said: “We are certainly not proposing to take action against people who feed small amounts of seed or bread to ducks or wild birds. The problem is with a minority of people who leave excessive amounts of food. We hope these signs will be an effective deterrent and there will be no need to issue any fines.

“Our aim is to encourage people to think about the impact of their actions on residents, as well as the impression it gives visitors to our city.”

The signs will be installed at points along Whipcord Lane, Seller Street and the canal side of Leadworks Lane.

Garden Quarter resident Maureen Crook, who raised the issue at a recent local councillor’s surgery, said: “Since we moved here 12 years ago we’ve seen much improvement to the area around the canal and Water Tower Gardens. But it only takes one individual leaving food out for birds to ruin these public areas, as the food was attracting rats and excessive amounts of pigeons.

“After reporting the issue I’m pleased to say that the feeding stopped and I can enjoy taking my grandchildren to play on the park in the area again.”

As well as being unsightly, bird droppings corrode stonework and damage buildings.

Droppings on pavements can become slippery when wet, posing a safety hazard, while droppings, nest material and dead birds can block guttering and drains.

Councillor Lynn Riley, executive member for localities, said: “The local community have worked with the council to come up with some practical and pragmatic solutions to a long-standing problem with pigeons.

“There are ways and places to feed birds that don’t encourage rats and vermin in residential areas and we would encourage people to look at advice from some of the many wildlife charities and organisations.

“To avoid attracting unwanted pests, any leftover food waste should be cleaned up, bagged and placed in a suitable waste container.”

I personally enjoy feeding pigeons, but I can see where having too many would be a problem. There have been pigeons in America’s cities since our ancestors brought them from Europe, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing if you keep the population in check.

If we really want to get the numbers down, there’s a company by the name of Innolytics (ovocontrol.com) that produces a product called OvoControl, which is “Ready-to-use birth control kibbles for pigeons” and has been used successfully in other cities.

However, just outright banning of feeding is cruel to the pigeons; despite the wayward french fry or hamburger bun that they may find, pigeons that rely on feedings will starve a long slow death. In a city as big and diverse as ours, we should be able to find at least a couple of places where pigeons can be fed without causing so much squawking.

Again, that is something I thought would register physically, where I’d think, “Wow. So this is what it feels to be completely vulnerable to any sort of infection.” Again, I was wrong. Other than a slight increase of nausea… bupkus.

Tuesday was what they call around here my new birthday. My stem cells were reintroduced to my system through an IV drip. For such a major event in my life, it didn’t seem like much, but, of course, it was. It really meant turning the corner and getting back to being healthier.

I did feel sorry for my day nurse, who had to stand — no sitting allowed — and study the IV, just in case, for more than an hour. But all went well, and he finally got to sit down, I assume. No one here seems to sit down much, at least not that I get to see.

I am isolated, other than staff and my wife, Sheri, who come in, but always masked, so I see just their eyes, forehead and hair. At times, it looks like bank robbers left their convention early to avoid traffic. The last couple of days, I’ve been able to walk around the pod outside the door, as long as I wear gloves and a mask. Believe me, it’s a lot more exciting than it sounds.

Let’s see, what else has been going on. Sheri finally buzzed off the rest of my hair and beard yesterday. It seems OK to me. I have to be careful, though, because when I run my hand across my head to fix my non-existent hair, my hand goes flying off the back. Even that’s OK as long as Sheri isn’t right behind me and gets a poke in the eye. Today, I’m sharing my new Yul Brenner look with you, especially those who watch “Hoarders” just so you can look around your house and say, “Hey. This isn’t so bad.”

The two pigeons who have been hanging around outside my window for the past couple of days appear to be getting ready to fulfill their part of the “Birds do it, bees do it” equation. They are the only other living creatures I see on any sort of regular basis, so I’m quite happy for them. Hey, don’t even think about judging me. If you were watching it on PBS you would be falling all over yourself to get to a phone to renew your subscription or make a pledge.

Right now, my biggest enemy is boredom, which you probably could tell. There is a TV; I have my computer, Nook and iPod, but sometimes it’s just hard to focus, let alone sit up and do something. Sheri comes every day, for a few hours, and it’s nice to have her here, but it leaves a lot of other empty hours to fill. Staffers stay and talk if they have the time, and I try to do little spurts of stuff and then rest.

I talk to my daughters Jennifer and Alison each day. I know it helps them to hear my voice and know that I really am doing quite well. I can write and text anything, but when they hear it in my voice, they know it’s real, whatever “it” might be.

I do have a couple of difficult stretches ahead. My white blood cell count continues to drop, which is a good thing because it means the chemo is working, but it also means I will be really, really tired and have some other side issues to deal with, including a high temperature. But the allergy team has already been in and determined the best antibiotic to knock down any fever, and there are plenty of measures the staff can take to help counter other symptoms. I admit I really have become quite the chicken about feeling sick. I hate it, but the anti-nausea medications really help.

Still, I feel better than I did, for now, and frankly, at this stage, that’s more than good enough. We’ll see what happens next. I’m not sure when I’ll be able to write again, but it helps me a lot, so I will do my best.

For now, I have some pigeon watching to do.

Drunk Royal Marine bit off pigeon’s HEAD

A Royal Marine bit the head off a pigeon during an all-day drinking session, a court has heard.

Commando Adam Karmali, 33, sunk his teeth into the bird as he drank lager with friends near the banks of the River Taff in Bute Park, Cardiff.

He was caught after police carried out forensic tests on the headless pigeon’s body – and discovered his DNA on its neck.

Now, the soldier has been handed a 12-month community order after admitting a charge of ‘not taking all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of an animal he was responsible for were met’.

Karmali, who lives in Wimborne, Dorset, had been visiting the Welsh capital with friends when he captured the pigeon in the park, Cardiff Magistrates’ Court heard.

He then posed for pictures with the live bird’s head in his mouth, before biting it off and spitting it on to the ground.

A female passerby was so horrified that she phoned police, who arrived to find the headless pigeon lying in the grass, the court heard.

Officers later carried out forensic tests on the pigeon – and discovered Karmali’s DNA on teethmarks around the bird’s neck.

Mike Curry, prosecuting, said: ‘This was a sickening offence carried out while drunk.

‘Karmali captured a pigeon and put it in his mouth and as the group took pictures he bit its head off.

‘A witness was so appalled police were contacted, the remains were recovered and a DNA match was discovered which led him to being arrested.’

When interviewed by police, Karmali told officers he had drunk around 20 cans of lager and had thought it was a ‘prank’ at the time.
‘Sickening offence’: Karmali (left) sunk his teeth into the bird (file picture, right) as he drank lager with friends near the banks of the River Taff in Bute Park, Cardiff. He was caught after police discovered his DNA on its body

Monique McKevitt, defending, said that biting the head off a pigeon was ‘clearly an unacceptable and repulsive act’.

But she said that Karmali faced being expelled out of the forces if he was given a prison sentence for the crime.

‘There will be internal disciplinary procedures not only for the act itself but for bringing the Royal Marines reputation into disrepute,’ she said.

Sentenced: After capturing the pigeon in the park, the soldier posed for photos with the live bird’s head, before biting it off and spitting it on to the ground. Above, Karmali is pictured with a shark in Australia two years ago

‘He would never normally behave that way and he feels extreme remorse and shame.’

Magistrates’ panel chairman Robert Cozens told Karmali that biting the head off a pigeon was punishable by prison.

However, he agreed that the Commando should be spared jail because it would end his career.

Sentencing Karmali, Mr Cozens told him: ‘We have taken great consideration over this and we consider the serious and pretty awful offence as having passed the custody threshold.

Guilty: He has now been handed a 12-month community order and told to complete 150 hours’ unpaid work

‘However, we have heard from your Captain you have a good military record and that this is out of character.

‘Because of your early guilty plea and the remorse you have shown we have brought your sentence down a level.’

Karmali was also ordered to complete 150 hours’ unpaid work.

Jane Turner, 40, said the pigeons had taken up residence on the roofs of terraced houses in Skipton Road, Colne, after a derelict mill was demolished.

A flock of ‘30 to 40’ birds had been living in Oak Mill, but after it was demolished in December last year they moved across the road to the roofs of the houses.

Mrs Turner said: “The pigeons are on the roofs of around three houses in Skipton Road. It’s a total nightmare. The back yard and windows are covered in pigeon muck — it’s a massive health hazard.

“I have two young children under four but I can’t let them out the back because of this. It’s been like this for about six months and we don’t know what else to do now.

“The council have said it is not their problem, but they gave approval for the demolition of the mill. Now we’ve been left with the pigeons.”

Pendle Council fought an 18-month battle to get the eyesore mill demolished, which ending with the authority taking the Isle of Man company that owns the building to court.

Philip Mousdale, deputy chief executive, said: “We sympathise with Ms Turner and her neighbours.

“However, the council does not have any responsibility or duty of care for pigeons as part of the planning process.”

The Town of Pictou’s efforts to clean up for next week’s royal visit have some locals worried they’re killing pigeons.

The town’s old post office has been derelict for years and pigeons roost in it. Recently, the windows were mostly boarded up.

Rachelle Gaudet said the situation was bleak. “An awful lot of pigeons. Some of them are trapped in the building [and] there’s a lot of them hanging around trying to get in,” she said.

She learned of the situation while walking past the building. She heard a racket as birds tried to get in or out. Gaudet said a broken window in the front is too small.

“We’re expecting the royal visit next week and so I would assume they boarded up all the windows so it wasn’t an eyesore,” she said. “Even if they just took a couple [of boards] down from the back so they could get in and out.”

Others took to Twitter to raise the alarm.

“In my opinion it was done to perk up the town for the royal visit,” said Charlene Steeves. “That’s all well and good but you can’t do that at the expense of these animals.”

Steeves said the building was boarded up Friday. The town said it was done Monday after complaints from the public.

Joe Hawes, mayor of Pictou, said the flap over the pigeons was misplaced. The town boarded up the windows after vandals smashed the glass. It’s a privately owned building, so the town will charge the owner for the work.

“They weren’t trying to kill the pigeons or harm them,” he said.

“The town crews went in and boarded up the windows and painted them black. They didn’t know that there was pigeons inside. They had no idea.”

When they figured out the pigeons were having problems, the crews returned and cut holes in the new plywood to grant avian access.

“Well, they can fly out now. There’s holes in there,” Hawes said. “They’re not in there shooting them or trapping them. It’s really much ado about nothing.”

He was asked about reports birds were flying straight into the walls. “That I don’t know. Birds are pretty intelligent. If there’s a hole there to get out, they’ll get out.”

Thursday morning more holes were added to open access for the birds on all floors.

Family can’t use their garden due to pigeons covering it in poo

Family can’t use their garden due to pigeons covering it in poo

for six years – particularly the bothersome birds that punctuate "every five centimetres" of her garden with their mess.

A WOMAN from West Green says she can no longer use her back garden because of the deluge of droppings that constantly rain down from pigeons roosting in a tree behind it.

Donna Lucas, 33, has had problems with the troublesome tree for six years – particularly the bothersome birds that punctuate “every five centimetres” of her garden with their mess.

Ms Lucas and her neighbours on Westfield Road have been trying for years to get the council to properly maintain the tree, which stands on land the authority owns behind her garden, blocks out light and “looks tatty”.

For three years Ms Lucas has been asking the council to prevent the pigeons from roosting in the oak, which last year the authority protected with a tree preservation order.

But it wasn’t until last Tuesday that any action was taken.

“The council have just hung some silver foil strands from the tree in the hope it will put the birds off from roosting there and that’s it,” she said of the measures the council has taken to stop the pigeons.

“We can’t use our garden. We don’t use it. Last year we spent quite a bit of money on it; putting in a new patio. It’s trashed.

“We only use the garden to go to and from the shed.”

In addition to the pigeon problem Ms Lucas explained that tree branches often fall into her garden, one of which “almost hit a neighbour’s grandchild”, and that people fly-tip in the area.

She said: “It’s a deluge of pigeon poo. My garden furniture is ruined. I half painted the shed last year and gave up.

“You can’t sit out there for fear of being hit.”

And the silver foil preventative measures put in the tree have failed – as the tree is as popular as ever with the birds.

Ms Lucas said: “There are lots of them up there. What the council has done looks like Christmas decorations. It’s a joke.

“The two guys who knocked on Tuesday from the council’s contractor were laughing. They were embarrassed.

“They said they didn’t want anyone to see them putting it up. And they were embarrassed that the council hadn’t contacted me to tell me what they were doing.”

A council spokesman explained that the strips of foil are designed to act as a “bird repellent”.

He added: “This is the only solution open to the council because we can’t harm a legally protected tree.

“We pruned the tree by 25 per cent in 2012 and, because it is protected by a tree preservation order (TPO) we will be unable to prune it again until the winter of 2016.

“We considered using a bird repellent gel on the tree but were unable to do this, again due to the TPO, because it would damage the tree.

Birdman will fly free

Birdman will fly free

pigeonJohn Wilkinson, who was jailed for six weeks for breaching an ASBO restricting his habit of feeding pigeons, is expected to be released before the weekend after serving half his sentence.

The Visitor campaigned to ‘Free the Morecambe Birdman’ believing his punishment did not fit the crime.

We also said sending a man to prison for feeding birds was an unnecessary waste of taxpayers’ money and unlikely to make a difference to his long-term behaviour.

We also called for active and meaningful support for those in Morecambe who have suffered years of misery as a direct result of his bird feeding activities.

Neighbours have complained for years about the noise, nuisance and smell caused by Wilkinson’s habit of feeding pigeons at his home on Cavendish Road in the West End of Morecambe.

Our campaign was sparked after angry Visitor readers bombarded social media with messages calling for Wilkinson, who is being held in HM Preston prison, to be released.

Rita Patton, a friend of Wilkinson’s who started her own campaign on Facebook and organised a public bird feeding in Morecambe to show support, said: “I’m proud of The Visitor. You’ve done things in the right way.

“Apparently John is doing really well although he’s a little nervous by all the attention, because he’s seen all the press and TV coverage.

“I’m going to have a meeting with him and (charity) West End Impact when he gets out, to explain to him why we started the campaign.

“I hope he will go back to feeding the birds, but a little more responsibly.”

Mrs Patton has collected £100 in donations, which she will hand over to Wilkinson once he is freed.

Meanwhile David Morris MP has written to the Secretary of State for Justice, Chris Grayling, to ask if procedures were followed correctly in the case of Wilkinson.

“This is a really sad case,” said Mr Morris.

“I pass Mr. Wilkinson’s house regularly and I am sure it must be frustrating for neighbours to have so many pigeons flying past all of the time.”

Wilkinson was sent to jail after feeding pigeons approximately 40kg of bird seed each day, along with vast quantities of food such as pizzas, pasta, apples and processed ready-meals, which he was forbidden from doing under the terms of his ASBO.

He will be released under legal guidelines which allow people jailed for less than a year to be freed after serving just half their sentence.

Tucson home overrun with pigeons

Tucson home overrun with pigeons

Pigeon Patrol A home in Tucson is being cleaned out by animal control officials after they discovered the two residents living with more than 140 pigeons.

The officers said they found at least 15 to 20 nests inside the house, in addition to rodents, insects and the pigeons themselves.

Neighbors said the residents encouraged the birds to enter the home by feeding them and leaving the door open. One neighbor said there were broken windows that the birds flew in and out of.

The property is long-term mental health housing with multiple units. According to a police report, City Code Enforcement workers checked on the home on May 30, but the residents didn’t let them in. They came back five days later with a search warrant.

One neighbor described the owner of the property as a “slum lord.” A representative of the owner, who cooks for the residents, agreed to let officials inside.

In total, officials said there were 143 pigeons found in the home and more than 100 more living outside. Based on the findings, three more units will need work, which will uproot 6 more residents.

City looking for solution to pigeon problem

City looking for solution to pigeon problem

PigeonAs complaints about pigeons in Uptown Greenwood continue to roll in from business owners, the City of Greenwood is considering options for dealing with the problem.

Greenwood City Council heard options for dealing with the problem during their monthly work session last Monday. City manager Charlie Barrineau said the pigeons have been a problem for a number of years, but the problem has gotten worse since many of the buildings along Main Street in Uptown have undergone renovations. Many of the birds had nested in some of those buildings and have been forced to move. The birds have settled in the arcades in Uptown Greenwood.

Barrineau told council that he found a company which specializes in solving problems with birds, though Barrineau noted pigeons would always be a problem. Barrineau also said there was no guarantee that what is done will be of any long term help in solving the problem. City workers spend a significant amount of time cleaning up the droppings from the pigeons in Uptown, Barrineau said. Mayor Welborn Adams said he has received a number of calls about the issue.

The first option Barrineau presented to council was an owl statue. Owls are natural predators of pigeons. The statues would keep the pigeons at bay a week or two, Barrineau said, but they would figure out the owl is not moving and come right back. The other option was to place bird spikes along the ledges in the arcades and netting to prevent the birds from entering areas where they nest and cause the most damage. The netting is similar to what is used behind home plate at baseball fields to stop foul balls from flying into the stands.

The cost for all three arcades would be about $15,000 Barrineau said, and would still be no guarantee the problem would be solved. The cost do one of the arcades as a beta test would be about $6,500 and would allow council to see if the spikes and netting will work before laying out the remainder of the cash for the other two arcades. The funding for the project will come from existing hospitality tax funds.

Pigeons and dog owners have it bad in Vienna, Austria

Pigeons and dog owners have it bad in Vienna, Austria

pigeonIt can be pretty hard to be a pigeon anywhere in the world, but it turns out that the charming and iconic city of Vienna just got to be one of the worst locations for the pesky birds. Dog owners, however, are facing even bigger problems.

It seems authorities are trying to clean up the city and they have implemented a couple of new plans to do just that.

Pick up that poop or pay

First it was the dog owners. City authorities organized “Waste Watchers” (cute name, huh?) to keep an eagle eye on dog owners in the streets and parks. Any errant bit of poop then earned the appropriate dog owner a huge fine of up to 470 euros for their crime.

Pigeons attract rats, ergo get rid of pigeons

Now, the city is saying that people must cease and desist from feeding the pigeons. They say that when that elderly gent or lady sitting in the park chucks bread crumbs at the pigeons, they must cough up a 36 euro fine. Not as bad as dog poop I suppose, but still.

What officials are saying is that feeding the birds with bread is “not good for them” plus the left-overs (pigeons leave left-overs?) then apparently attract the rats.

Vienna city councilor Ulrike Sima pronounced that, “whoever feeds pigeons, feeds rats,” adding that feeding the pigeons is “misunderstood animal welfare” as by eating human food “they get sick and suffer.”

Referring to limited green space in the city, Sima also said this should not be “rendered unusable due to the pigeons.”

Pigeon prison camps

So that the birds do not “suffer” and the parks are not “rendered unusable,” city officials have other sinister plans afoot.

Experts in the field have come up with an idea for good old population-reduction. They want to set up a special nesting site for the birds, which will apparently attract them using what they term “pigeon psychology.”

This wonderful pigeon residential estate will house up to 400 of the pesky birds, which will be fed a much more appropriate diet. In return for this life of sheer luxury, their eggs will be removed from their nests and replaced with dummies, thus preventing them from breeding.

Anyhow, if you feed a pigeon in Vienna you will now face a fine of 36 euros for your efforts.

“Waste-Watchers” that have been employed in Vienna to monitor naughty dog owners who neglect to pick up the poop. Now the city is going one step further and targeting the poor pigeons.
City management reckons there are too many pigeons in the city and they have even compared the birds to vermin, with city councilor Ulrike Sima stating that “Whoever feeds pigeons, feeds rats.” Sima added that feeding pigeons is “misunderstood animal welfare.” She said that human food and bread crumbs are actually bad for the birds and that “they get sick and suffer.” OK, and the mention of rats actually means that any bread left over by the birds attracts the vermin.
“We live in a big city, but there is already limited green space,” she added, saying that this should not be rendered unusable due to the pigeons.
It seems the pigeons are breeding beyond all expectations and there is now an excess number of the birds hanging (and flying) around in the city. In the meantime a poster campaign has been launched to warn the general public on the dangers (and expense) of feeding the poor birds.
Experts in the city are coming up with some ideas, however, on how to reduce the population by setting up a special nesting site for the birds. Apparently this site will attract the birds using what they term “pigeon psychology.”
The new fancy site will house up to 400 pigeons who will be fed the appropriate food. All well and good. But in return for their life of luxury, the pigeons’ eggs will be taken from the nests and replaced with dummies, thus preventing them from breeding.

“There is a lot, a lot. They go through the dumpsters. Pigeons are everywhere,” said resident Hilario Herrera.

The residents have pleaded with management to clean up after the pigeons and keep them away.

“If you have problems with birds in a living space, deal with it immediately,” said Mark DiMenna, deputy director of the Environmental Health Department. “The birds are a problem, the droppings are a problem, but the bird mites are going to be a nightmare.”

Most find it disgusting, and many tenants say it’s causing health problems.

Some have been forced to go to the emergency room for breathing problems. Many have found themselves covered in bite marks, likely from bird mites.

“I have a 2 1/2-year-old daughter to support and she’s getting bit too. I didn’t know about it and now I know, so I’m going to have her stay at her grandma’s house,” said Herrera.

The department will go to St. Anthony’s Plaza Apartments Wednesday.

“The water is brown and oily. In fact, one of the maintenance men, the maintenance manager told me not to step in it, don’t touch it, don’t get near it, because it’s all very toxic, because the roof is covered in pigeon droppings,” said resident Judy Specht.

Ultrasonic pigeon & bird scaring systems have been introduced into the pest control marketplace due to the fact that ultrasound is too high-pitched for human hearing but falls within the hearing range of most species of birds. Most sonic bird scaring devices produce a sound that is audible to the human ear and therefore may cause human disturbance if used in an area of human habitation.

Ultrasonic systems can be used in a wide variety of locations without causing human interference making them an ideal choice for areas where noise-related scaring is not an option. The exception to this rule may be where women and young children are concerned. With age, the human ear looses the ability to hear ultrasound but in some women and particularly in the young, ultrasound falls within hearing ranges and can cause considerable discomfort and headaches. This may have the effect of restricting the use of ultrasonic pigeon & bird scarers when used for pigeon control and gull control in urban areas and on industrial sites.

A constant 15-25 KHz setting (15 KHz for external model)

  • A variable setting allowing the user to modulate the frequency between 15 and 30 KHz with different speeds or ‘warbles’ (15-25 KHz for external model)
  • A high/medium/low frequency setting
  • A combination mode which alternates the ‘constant’ frequency and the ‘warble’ output in timed bursts
  • Up to 6500 sq feet coverage (3600 sq feet for external model)
  • Power consumption: approx 10 watts (depending on brand)

Most ultrasonic pigeon & bird scarers are powered by mains electricity in an effort to provide the user with a maintenance-free option. Some manufacturers offer their range with a mains adaptor giving 12 volts DC as standard but will provide a unit with connections to a wholly DC power source (normally car/leisure battery) on request. Two manufacturers also offer an environmentally friendly solar panel option allowing the battery to be ‘topped up’ when exposed to daylight or direct sunlight.

Due to the fact that ultrasound travels in straight lines and will not pass through solid objects, a system providing multiple speaker options will provide the most comprehensive coverage. Some units also offer the option of installing extension speakers for use in areas that are architecturally complex. Due to the nature of ultra high frequency sound-waves that spread out in circular waves from the source, a multi-speaker unit with 4-speakers ensures that the sound waves overlap, providing total coverage.

The ultrasonic pigeon & bird scarers that combine ultrasound with distress calls, strobe lights and predator calls are undoubtedly an ‘all-singing-all-dancing’ product that may be ideal for certain sites, but the stroboscopic and sonic elements may result in the unit being considerably less versatile in an urban application. As a roost inhibitor, for areas rarely frequented by humans (for example the underside of a railway or river bridge), the multi-faceted device would be entirely appropriate and may offer high levels of protection. However, the lack of an AC power supply in this type of environment will inevitably make the product more labour intensive. It is clear that the combo units are species-specific and based on their potential to create human disturbance, these products must also be considered to be highly context-specific.

Sonic bird control systems are becoming more common in the bird control sector and broadly speaking fall into three distinct categories; ultrasonic systems, sonic systems and bio-acoustic systems. For information on ultrasonic systems please see our ‘Ultrasonic Systems’ product review. Sonic systems produce a variety of electronically-generated sounds normally emitting noise levels up to 120 dB (A) and are designed to frighten birds with loud and unpleasant noises. Sonic noise is sound that is audible to the human ear – ultrasonic sound is normally not audible to the human ear but in some cases can be heard by women or young children. Bio-acoustic systems use natural alarm and distress calls as well as predator calls in order to create a hostile environment for the target species. Alarm calls are made when the bird perceives itself to be in danger, distress calls are made when the bird is in pain or has been attacked by a predator and predator calls are cries made by a predatory bird. Distress calls, alarm calls and predator calls are audible to the human ear.

Pure sonic systems are not widely available for the purpose of bird control with a majority of sonic devices being provided as part of a 2/3/4-way or even a 5-way system. These systems may include any of the following; distress calls, alarm calls, predator calls, ultrasonic sounds and sonic sounds. In some cases these systems are complimented by strobe lights providing a visual scaring element to the system. Most systems are available for internal or external use and a majority of the combo systems have multi-speaker options for ‘surround-sound’ scaring.

The most effective sonic systems appear to be those that are programmable and which offer sonic, ultrasonic and bio-acoustic options. For the purposes of this review it is these systems that we will concentrate upon. A majority of these systems are static systems with multi-speaker options that would normally be used for the protection of larger areas such as football stadiums or large industrial warehouses. For smaller more intimate areas the single-speaker units may be more appropriate but many of these units are only available with single-voice options such as distress calls or predator calls. Where sonic systems are installed in areas in areas of human habitation it must be understood that noise will be generated which may be intrusive, unpleasant and anti-social. For any type of urban application a thorough survey of the area must first be undertaken to assess the potential for human disturbance. If a sonic system is to be considered for an internal application such as a factory unit where people are working, care must be taken to ensure that workers do not suffer sonic disturbance (or visual disturbance if a combo unit with a strobe is used).

Most sonic systems are powered by mains electricity (AC current) for ease of use and in an effort to reduce the need for human interaction, but a majority of systems also offer a battery-powered option (DC current) and in some cases a solar panel option as well.

  • Ultrasonic frequency range: 15-25 KHz
  • Sonic frequency range: 3-5 KHz
  • Ultrasonic sound pressure: 95-102 dB (per speaker) at 1 metre
  • Sonic sound pressure: 105-110 dB (per speaker) at 1 metre
  • Switchable sound options: Distress calls, Predator sounds, Sonic sounds
  • Constant sounds: Ultrasonic sounds play constantly
  • Ultrasonic modes: High frequency, Medium frequency, Low frequency
  • Operation modes: Delay period (time between playing calls), Time of operation, Random mode
  • Delay period settings: Short/Medium/Long/Extra Long
  • Timed operations: Day only/24 hour/Night only
  • Random settings: Mode on, Mode off

Another major consideration when siting a sonic device is proximity to human habitation. The benefit of a fully programmable device is that the various sounds and calls (and lights if applicable) can be switched off at times when the device may be liable to cause disturbance, but the more basic units may need to be manually switched requiring regular human interaction. In the case of all sonic systems the transmission of sound will be effected by wind, temperature and the deflection of sound waves from surrounding buildings and therefore finding the optimum site may be time consuming. It is also the case that when the speakers need to be re-located due to the risk of habituation, the process of risk assessment must be undertaken all over again to ensure that the reflected sounds not only continue to be effective as a deterrent but also do not disturb people living or working in the vicinity.

The sonic bird scarer is a relatively inexpensive product based on the sheer number of scaring options provided together in one unit, certainly in the case of the multi-function scarers, but the issue of habituation is an ongoing concern for users. Most experts believe that sonic products, be they bio-acoustic, ultrasonic, sonic or a combination of all three can only ever play a part in an overall control strategy combining other deterrents and anti-perching products. Although the product may appear to be reasonably priced based on the various options available to the user and relative to some of the more cost-prohibitive exclusion products such as bird netting, when provided as part of an overall control system the product does not seem quite so cost-effective. Many users will purchase this product because they are simply looking for a maintenance-free option that is clean, cheap to run and which has numerous operating options. It is possible, however, that the product will not quite live up to their expectations when the necessity to regularly re-site the product and/or the speakers to reduce habituation is taken into consideration, combined with the probable need to complement the system with deterrents.

Strobe lights are also available with a high-frequency sonic device in a single unit providing bothsonic and visual disturbance to roosting birds. According to manufacturers’ claims strobe lights can be an effective bird control product with a wide variety of birds including pigeons, swallows, starlings, crows, waterfowl and blackbirds making the product extremely versatile.

The main application for the use of strobe lights would be warehouses, the undersides of bridges or roof voids where light is restricted or where the area is in complete darkness. In these environments the pulsing light will have the most disorientating effect on the target species. If a strobe light is combined with anoise-generating device or an ultrasonic device the effect will be even more disturbing for roosting birds. Based on the environments in which the strobe light will be most effective, it is the feral pigeon that the device will be most commonly used to deter. A conventional stand-alone strobe light unit designed for bird control usage will typically cover an area of up to 10,000 square feet sending out intense white, red and blue light at 75 flashes per minute. The 1 million-candlepower light pulses provided at these frequencies will be intolerable to most species of birds disorientating them and resulting in an immediate desire to escape the area, according to one manufacturer of the product. Most strobe lights will be provided with a timing device to reduce the potential for habituation. If a strobe light is constantly powered the target species will almost certainly habituate to it.

Balloon on Pole

  • The product is only inflated up to 85% for maximum impact
  • To increase the random motion of Terror-Eyes, use the coil spring provided, and enforce it with a piece of strong twine slightly longer. This should prevent it from distorting the spring
  • When suspending Terror-Eyes from a rope, it is helpful, especially in windy areas, to anchor the unit to something below it. Use the loop on the bottom of Terror-Eyes
  • In order to rid pigeons, locate Terror-Eyes close to the roosting birds, with good line of sight to the infested areas
  • When installing 2 or more units, hang them each at a different height (a minimum of 1 unit diameter apart)
  • To prevent birds becoming used to Terror-Eyes, occasionally relocate units
  • Punctures can easily be repaired with a vinyl bonding agent About Pigeon Patrol:

They are appealing to kite fliers to spare a thought for safety of pigeons and other birds perched on trees or in flight struck by the tang of the thread that is made sharp by anointing a ‘masala’ comprising crushed glass.

Officials of forest department have joined hands to create awareness among masses after realising the threat. Conservator A K Acharya told TOI “we have identified pockets where strength of birds/pigeons are in a sizeable number and decided to depute teams to create awareness over the issue.” He added “teams have been assigned to remove ‘manjha’ entangled in branches of trees and create extensive awareness so that lives of pets could be saved”.

An ardent birdwatcher Ramji Goswami says “many pigeons and other birds died after they were trapped or their throats were silt by the kite thread in the city”. He added “apart from pets, many humans get seriously injured too when they come in contact with the ‘manjha'”.

District forest officer Manoj Khare told TOI “the department has decided to launch awareness campaign in identified pockets specially where kite flying is common and volunteers would be appealing to kite fliers to avoid ‘manjha’.”

In Gujarat state, officials of the forest department had formed a rescue operation centre with the help of local non-government organisations and volunteers and the drive yielded successful results.

Ramji says “if you visit old Katra area, dead birds and pigeons hanging from trees trapped in ‘manjha’ are a common sight.” He added “it’s difficult to ascertain the exact number of birds killed by kite thread but stress should be on rescuing the injured ones and safety of other birds.”

The university had to reschedule assessments for 224 law and modern languages students, whose exams were stopped because of the noise from a pair of pigeons that had found their way into the examination hall.

According to Seren, the Bangor student newspaper that first reported the story, the pigeons were already in the hall when students took their seats on Tuesday morning. The exams were not postponed until around 45 minutes later, however, despite invigilators being aware of the birds.

One student told Seren: “There were two pigeons that somehow got in and they were on top of the organs in the back of the room and would not just shut up.”

It is unclear how the pigeons entered the hall, though they may have flown through some missing windows near the roof.

Following the postponement, many students took to social media to express concerns that their marks would be affected or that they would be unable to attend resits.

The university said: “First-year and third-year students following modules in public law and international law were those mainly affected.

“Bangor University has apologised to the students concerned and in addition to rescheduling the exams, have assured students that they will not be disadvantaged as a result of this disruption.

“Other students who were sitting other papers were relocated and were able to continue with their exam.

“The pigeons left the hall before the afternoon exam session, which went ahead as planned.”
