Why Are Pigeons Such a Nuisance?

Why Are Pigeons Such a Nuisance?

Affectionately known by most people as rats with wings, sky rats, gutter birds and flying ashtrays, pigeons must be one of the most unloved birds around.

The hatred can be extreme, with extreme pigeon fearing labelled as peristerophobia, but it is so widely shared several clothing manufacturers produce “I hate pigeons” T-shirts.

The mayor of New York’s latest operation in the Pigeon War, he is defending his ban on feeding in court. He opened hostilities several years ago, throwing money and some interesting tactics at the problem – a pair of Harris hawks being just one.

Pigeons are seen as the disease-ridden source of myriad droppings.

We will poop on everything you love

We will poop on everything you love

But when it comes to hating pigeons, the focus of most people’s dislike is the feral pigeon. It is a domesticated rock dove that has returned to wild or semi-wild conditions. It is usually grey and can be seen in most villages, towns and cities across the UK – and Europe.

They are known to be susceptible to some diseases like tuberculosis, although no more so than any other bird species or wild animals. But the fact there are so many of them means people have good reason to raise the point, argue critics. There are millions.

We share the UK with an estimated 18 million feral pigeons and they can breed up to up to six times a year. They are one of the few birds recognised by the government as a nuisance pest and can be controlled using humane methods and with a licence.

The sheer scale of numbers has resulted in two other commonly cited criticisms – they damage property and drive out other bird species.

The History of Pigeons

The History of Pigeons

Pigeons have lived alongside man for thousands of years with the first images of pigeons being found by archaeologists in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) and dating back to 3000BC.

It was the Sumerians in Mesopotamia that first started to breed white doves from the wild pigeon that we see in our towns and cities today and this undoubtedly accounts, certainly in part, for the amazing variety of colours that are commonly found in the average flock of urban pigeons.

To ancient peoples a white pigeon would have seemed miraculous and this explains why the bird was widely worshipped and considered to be sacred. Throughout human history the pigeon has adopted many roles ranging from symbols of gods and goddesses through to sacrificial victims, messengers, pets, food and even war heroes– ultimately to what they are known as today, ‘the rats of the sky’.

The More You Know: Symbolic Meaning of Releasing White Pigeons

The More You Know: Symbolic Meaning of Releasing White Pigeons

Although there are many types of white doves, the ones released in ceremonies, white rock doves, are actually white racing pigeons. Doves and pigeons are part of the same bird family, but people tend to disassociate the two birds; one is thought of as beautiful, the other foul. Whether you refer to them as white racing pigeons or white rock doves, releasing these birds at ceremonies and events carries symbolic meaning.
weddingwings
For centuries, people have viewed the white dove as a symbol of peace and love. The ancient Greeks and Romans exchanged doves as wedding gifts. White doves are also present in the Bible as a symbol of holiness, and they sometimes represent the Holy Spirit, saints or guardian angels. Christianity isn’t the only religion that incorporates the white dove as a symbol; Chinese people view the bird as a symbol of peace in the next life. When released during ceremonies, doves carry these meanings with them.

Pigeon Eating Chicken from Midtown Food Court

Pigeon Eating Chicken from Midtown Food Court

There’s a photo making the rounds that might give you second thoughts about eating at a food truck in New York City.

In this particular case, there were a couple of pigeons that were also dining there.

“I’m actually a food scientist,” Midtown resident Sara Rodich said. “So this kind of freaked me out especially.”

So when 23-year-old saw the two pigeons feasting on their fellow fowl — grilled chicken at a falafel cart — the only thing she could think of was all the bacteria on their feet.

“There’s salmonella…it’s disgusting, the range, what it could do to your system,” she said. “So it’s pretty gross.”

The picture, taken two weeks ago along Sixth Avenue near Radio City Music Hall, shows an unattended foot cart with the unwanted visitors and is a clear health department violation.

Yum...

Yum…

“I just hope that vendors who this ever happens to pay more attention,” Rodich said. “Because a lot of people trust the safety of the carts on the street.”

Of all the vendors set up along Sixth avenue, there was a big empty spot Thursday.

“People are supposed are supposed to have good food, have healthy food,” vendo Amin Marey said. “That’s nasty to see it like that.”

Other vendors echoed Marey’s sentiment.

“The pigeon is standing on the grill, that means the grill is off,” vendor Magdy Shahin said. “How is he serving the people with the grill off?”

The Department of Health issued a statement, saying, “Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will investigate this incident, and New Yorkers are reminded to call 311 to report unsanitary mobile food vending conditions.”

Pigeon Recipe Excerpt from the Boston Cook Book

Pigeon Recipe Excerpt from the Boston Cook Book

Pigeon recipes from the Boston Cook Book

Written in 1918, This classic American cooking reference includes 1,849 recipes, including everything from “after-dinner coffee”—which Farmer notes is beneficial for a stomach “overtaxed by a hearty meal”– to braised pigeons!

Here’s an excerpt for the recipe of potted pigeon:

“Draw and clean. Break the legs just above the feet; leave enough below the joint to die down to the tail. Wash and wipe. If old and tough, cover them with vinegar, spiced and flavored with onion, and let them stand several hours. This makes them tender. Drain and wipe; stuff if you like, with cracker crumbs highly seasoned and moistened with butter. Dredge with salt, pepper, and flour. Fry several slices of salt pork; cut one large onion fine, and fry in the salt pork fat. Put the crisp fat in the stewpan, add the fried onion, then brown the pigeons all over in the fat left in the pan. Put them in the stewpan; add boiling water or stock enough to half cover them; add a pinch of herb tied in a bag. Simmer from one to three hours, or till the pigeons are tender. Remove the fat from the broth, season to taste. and thicken with flour and butter cooked together. Strain over the pigeons, and serve hot.”

Your Opinion: Should Scientists Bring Back the Passenger Pigeon?

Your Opinion: Should Scientists Bring Back the Passenger Pigeon?

Once the most plentiful bird on our planet, the passenger pigeon is now extinct. The last of the Passengers, named Martha, died in Cincinnati zoo in 1914.

Molecular biologists are looking into ways to regenerate the species, but are running into opposition from conservationists who are worried this will lessen the urgency when it comes to saving endangered species.

Pigeon Hatches Chicken Egg on Bur Dubai Balcony

Pigeon Hatches Chicken Egg on Bur Dubai Balcony

In a bizarre case, a pigeon has hatched a chicken egg on the balcony of a Bur Dubai resident.

Fready Samuel, an Indian ad man and entrepreneur, said that the pigeon had been homing in on his balcony for a few weeks before it laid two eggs in the corner of a plant holder.

“I was observing the bird and she spent four days sitting on the eggs. But sadly the eggs got spoilt because of the water in the plant holder. I felt so bad for the pigeon and wanted to do something about it,” said Samuel.

‘Eggs-periment’

He said his immediate objective was to replace the spoilt eggs in the plant holder with new pigeon eggs.

3536771461

“I tried very hard but couldn’t find any pigeon eggs. So I decided to keep two chicken eggs which in any case would have been consumed for breakfast. My only aim was to comfort the pigeon which had lost its eggs four days into its hatching cycle.”

As it turns out, the pigeon did take comfort.

Samuel said he read up about the hatching patterns of pigeons and hens, but was in for a complete surprise.

“I researched about both their hatching patterns and learnt that pigeons hatch eggs in 14 days while hens take 21 days. I expected the pigeon to sit on the eggs for only 10 days as she had already spent four days on her own eggs. But she actually spent 21 days on the new eggs. What’s more, one of the eggs hatched to our utter surprise and we had a beautiful ‘dove chick’ on our balcony. It was a truly amazing experience.”

He said he plans to leave the chick, now one week old, at his cousin’s Al Quoz villa where she could be in the company of other hens and chickens.

Pigeon Mating Habits

Pigeon Mating Habits

The feral pigeon mates for life and can breed up to 8 times a year in optimum conditions, bringing two young into the world each time.  The frequency of breeding is dictated by the abundance of food.  The eggs take 18/19 days to hatch with both parents incubating the eggs.  Young dependant pigeons are commonly known as ‘squabs’.

Aww… Look at those squabs…

Both parents feed the young with a special ‘pigeon milk’ that is regurgitated and fed to the squabs.  Each squab can double its birth weight in one day but it takes 4 days for the eyes to open.

pigeon_2

“I will peck the soul from your face to feed my squab squad”

When squabs are hungry they ‘squeak’ whilst flapping their wings and as a result they are also commonly known as ‘squeakers’.  At approximately 2 months of age the young are ready to fledge and leave the nest.  This much longer than average time spent in the nest ensures that life expectancy of a juvenile pigeon is far greater than that of other fledglings.

Why Do Pigeons Bob Their Heads?

The pigeon has side-mounted eyes, unlike humans and owls which have forward facing eyes. As pigeons have monocular vision rather than binocular vision they bob their heads for depth of perception. The pigeon’s eyes function much better with stationary images and therefore as the pigeon takes a step forward the head is temporarily left behind. The next step jerks the head forward again and so on. This allows the bird to correctly orient itself.

People and Pigeons Share Risky Ways

People and Pigeons Share Risky Ways

Gamblers are real bird-brains in the way they are tempted to take risks, scientists have found.

Research has shown that both human gamblers and pigeons are 35% more likely to take greater risks when there is a chance of a big win.

Dr Elliot Ludvig, from the University of Warwick’s Department of Psychology, said: “Birds are distantly related to humans, yet we still share the same basic psychology that drives risk-taking. This may be due to a shared common ancestry or similar evolutionary pressures.

“When people gamble, they often rely on past experiences with risk and rewards to make decisions. What we found in this study is that pigeons used these past experiences in very similar ways to guide their future gambling decisions. Any big wins we’ve had in the past are memorable and stand-out when we are making our decision to gamble again.”

Human volunteers and pigeons were tested with four options: two that led to high-value rewards and two that led to low-value rewards.

While humans were rewarded with points, the pigeons were rewarded with food.

For each high or low reward level, one safe option resulted in a guaranteed fixed reward, and one risky option yielded a 50/50 chance of a better or worse outcome.

Both birds and humans alike were found to be 35% more likely to take a gamble on the high-value rewards.

The study, published in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters, was conducted in collaboration with the University of Alberta, Canada, and part-funded by the Alberta Gambling Research Institute.

The Politics of Being a Pigeon

The Politics of Being a Pigeon

One of nature’s most fascinating phenomena is the collective behaviour of animals. A shoal of fish, a swarm of locusts, and a colony of ants can all act as superorganisms, where the group as a whole makes collective decisions.

Equally interesting are smaller groups that also have this peculiar behaviour, such as a flock of migratory birds that forms a “V” in the sky. Researchers have observed and studied this particular grouping of animals for many decades, yet little is known about their social structure. Do they have leaders? If so, are their roles similar to humans in anyway?

The lack of understanding of this behaviour intrigued Máté Nagy, a zoologist at University of Oxford. He thought that studying at least one species may shed light on the occurrence of this behaviour in the rest of the animal kingdom, including humans.

In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Nagy and his colleagues studied the behaviour of domestic pigeons (Columba livia). Their aim was to study social dominance in one task and use the results to analyse the behaviour of leaders (if there were any) in a new task.

Pigeon formation.

For this, they tagged three groups of ten pigeons with a barcode and programmed computers to follow the movements of these pigeons using a video feed. In the first task, designed to study social dominance, the three groups of pigeons were left with a feeding cup. The group tracked three types of behaviour: feeding-queueing (a measure of an individual’s access to food), approach-avoidance (a measure of the interactions between individuals) and pecking order (measure of aggression displayed through fighting and chasing).

After some number-crunching that took the three types of behaviour into consideration, the simple feeding task showed that a social hierarchy existed among pigeons. Nagy was able use that data to identify the socially dominant individuals within each group.

Next, each group was let free so that Nagy could determine if the socially dominant pigeons took on the job of leaders when the pigeons flew as a flock. This time, the pigeons were fitted with a GPS tracker, which allowed Nagy to track the positions of each individual relative to the rest of the flock.

Here Nagy found that the leaders in flock-flying were different from those that were socially dominant during the feeding exercise. These results are unlike what you would see with gray wolves or chacma baboons, where the socially dominant individual may also lead the group. The leaders did have some common features, though. The socially dominant individuals were more aggressive than average flock member and had a comparatively larger body.

Because of the complications involved in flock-flying, it is possible that a somewhat less aggressive, and possibly better informed individual takes the leading position. However, there was no relation between leadership and age, so it wasn’t that the more experienced flyers lead the flock.

Mike Tyson and Pigeons

Mike Tyson and Pigeons

Many people have heard of Mike Tyson, the fearsome former heavyweight champion– but did as many people know he had a love for pigeons?

The birds, considered a dirty nuisance to most people, were his friends.

tyson-pigeons-6Owning 3,000 of the birds, he called pigeon racing his ‘first love’. Much to his wife’s dismay, Tyson can spend hours at the coop, staring at the birds as they flap their wings and hop around.

“The pigeons are man’s first feathered friends, before chickens,” Tyson said. “They were money in ancient times.”

For Mr. Tyson, home was never something to be taken for granted. As a boy growing up in a raucous and dysfunctional apartment in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, he joined some pals in keeping a roof-top suite of pet pigeons. One afternoon, a street tough came along, taunted the future champ, blithely snapped the neck of one of his pigeons and threw the bird back in his face. That was Tyson’s first fight as a result of his love for pigeons.

‘They were my escape,’ he said. ‘I was fat and ugly. Kids teased me all the time. The only joy I had was pigeons.’

5 Reasons Not to Feed Pigeons

5 Reasons Not to Feed Pigeons

1. Large population of pigeons is a health hazard.

Our huge feral pigeon population is a health hazard and creates many problems in the city. Pigeon droppings dirty public spaces, do costly damage to buildings, and can spread life-threatening diseases, especially to the elderly and immune-deficient. Their nesting materials block drains and harbor parasites like bird mites. Pigeon food makes a mess and attracts rats.

2. Feeding pigeons promotes overbreeding.
Pigeon feeding produces overbreeding. Pigeons normally breed two or three times a year, producing two eggs per brood. Overfed city pigeons can breed up to eight times a year.

Sometimes having a tender heart towards pigeons may have destructive consequences

Sometimes having a tender heart towards pigeons may have destructive consequences

3. Pigeons are harmed when fed.
When you feed pigeons, you are not doing them a favor. They lose their natural ability to scavenge and survive on their own. Pigeon over population leads to overcrowded, unsanitary conditions and produces sick and injured birds. A smaller flock is healthier and does less damage.

4. It attracts other pests
People who feed pigeons often end up feeding more than they bargained for. If food is too plentiful, pigeons may not always eat everything that is left out for them. The remaining food may attract rats and mice.

Lovely, though pigeons have become an increasing environmental and health concern in recent years

5. It affects other birds
Feeding feral pigeons can deprive other birds of food and might scare them from your garden. Smaller birds such as thrushes and finches are often frightened off when numbers of much larger pigeons arrive. Feral pigeons can also carry viruses that can be spread to other birds causing death.

Wayward racing pigeon not welcome at its new home

Wayward racing pigeon not welcome at its new home

An errant racing pigeon has Renwick orchard owner Bob Crum cursing the day the bird entered his life.

According to Crum the pigeon arrived three weeks ago and had made itself at home, enjoying a regular supply of food from his hen house. However, the pesky bird’s presence has put his hens off laying, and it doesn’t look ready to leave any time soon.

What Crum first thought was a novelty turned into a daily chase to catch the food thief.

He had made noises to scare the pigeon but unperturbed by the riled fruit grower, it just flew off only to return later. The bird has grey and white plumage with an amulet of pink and purple feathers around its neck.

Crum believed the racing pigeon had deviated from its route.

10735576

“We thought it was hanging around because it liked us. We discovered it was eating the hens’ food and was putting them off laying. It causes all hell and the chooks don’t like it. They won’t lay in their nests in the hen house,” he said.

It had been eating wheat and seemed happy, Crum said.

“I felt sorry for it at first but we have had enough. It is pretty clever, it is no bird brain.

“It keeps out smarting me. In the hen house it sneaked out every time I tried to catch it. It flies up to the roof and watches what is happening.”

Crum doesn’t believe in killing the bird so lethal force hasn’t yet been considered. “I don’t have it in me to harm it – I wouldn’t want any thing bad to happen to it,” he said.

He had been in touch with a pigeon club to see if any pigeon fanciers were missing a bird but his inquiries had drawn a blank.

“I hope its missing owner comes and gets it quick.”

If you are missing a racing pigeon call Crum on 03 572 8237.

Pigeon racing is now illegal: NSPCA

Pigeon racing is now illegal: NSPCA

Activities including the importing, breeding, trading in and translocation of pigeons are now listed as prohibited activities in terms of the Invasive and Alien Species List as published by the department of water and environmental affairs,” the National Council of SPCAs said in a statement.

The prohibition included “releasing of any specimen of a listed invasive species” which effectively meant that “releasing pigeons to race or as homing pigeons” was illegal.

The NSPCA said the new legislation was published in the Government Gazette on August 1.

Invasive

Invasive

“Our concerns include the rate of attrition during races. That is, the high number of pigeons who simply do not ever reach their race destination for various reasons including exhaustion, and racing taking place in inclement or extreme weather conditions.”

Relevant industry role players had been informed about the new legislation and the NSPCA was obligated to report any violations to the department, it said.

President of the SA National Pigeon Organisation (Sanpo), Faunty Gillmer said they were seeking a meeting with the environmental affairs minister.

He said the new law, which had been in the pipeline since 2004, would do away with the 100-year-old sport of pigeon racing.

PIGEONS: MORE THAN RATS WITH WINGS

PIGEONS: MORE THAN RATS WITH WINGS

Woody Allen famously dubbed them “rats with wings,” and we all more or less agree: when it comes to pigeons, everyone’s a hater. They’re filthy disease carriers! Parasites of the urban environment! Dumber than chickens!

Not so, says award-winning Toronto-based filmmaker Scott Harper, and he’s setting the record straight in his documentary The Secret Life of Pigeons, airing Thursday November 20 on CBC’s The Nature of Things.

“They can recognize an individual by their face alone,” says Harper, revealing just one of the surprising pigeon truths revealed in his film. The birds are actually highly intelligent, and can differentiate between the nice old lady bringing a bag of corn to share and the mean old witch ready to beat them off with a stick, just by examining their facial features.

Pigeons also have a very long and surprisingly amicable history with humans. Domesticated as far back as ancient Egypt, pigeons have served man as a mode of communication, a tasty snack, a form of entertainment and even as a medium for studying brain chemistry.

Carrier pigeons saved thousands of lives during WWI, and were as close to a walkie talkie as guys like Genghis Khan were going to get.

pigeons (1)

Pigeon races were once a popular pass time, and though they don’t draw a crowd like they once did, the Queen and Prince Charles continue to keep racing pigeons, and there are still races held as nearby as Bradford, Ontario.

Then there is the world of the pigeon fancier — individuals who breed pigeons for show. Yes, it’s a thing that exists, and we suggest you Google it (to see many photos of grown men — including Mike Tyson — holding their beloved pigeons).

And because pigeons form and then lose memory in a manner remarkably similar to humans, scientists use the birds in Alzheimer’s research and testing.

But perhaps the most surprising fact revealed about these ubiquitous birds is that they continue to exist at all.

“It’s amazing how these birds have survived in a place where they are really not wanted,” says Harper. The story of the urban pigeon actually turns out to be a rather heartbreaking one. Because they are domesticated animals that have found themselves homeless, they don’t feed on anything natural, and so must surviving on little more than refuse and what the odd pigeon lover leaves for them. In fact, says Harper, when someone who regularly feeds the neighbourhood pigeons stop doing so, that whole flock will likely die. “They made feeding pigeons in London’s Trafalgar Square illegal,” says Harper, “and now there are no pigeons in Trafalgar Square.”

Pigeon as an Omen

Pigeon as an Omen

The pigeon is a determined creature. It will stay in an area as long as there is food, despite attempts by humans or other birds to chase it away. The pigeon sighting can encourage you to be stubborn and hang in there, regardless of what challenges are thrown in your path.

The pigeon also has strong connections to house and home. If a pigeon appears to you, take a look at your relationship with your home. What does it represent to you? What would you like it to be for you? If these things don’t match up, you know you have work to do. The pigeon is safest in a flock. Don’t discount the strength and support found in a community. Furthermore, remember the importance of communication within that community; don’t assume people know things just because you do. Make sure everyone is in the loop regarding important information.

How Effective is Killing Pigeons as a Means of Bird Control?

How Effective is Killing Pigeons as a Means of Bird Control?

Pigeons breed all year round and according to the extent of food available to them. If food is readily available, and assuming that good roosting and breeding opportunities exist, the feral pigeon will breed between 4 and 8 times a year, bringing two young into the world each time. A juvenile pigeon can breed in its first year of life. Simple maths confirms that unless available food is strictly controlled, pigeons will rapidly breed out of control, resulting in overpopulation in areas of human habitation. To add to this, scientific research and research carried out by PiCAS International has proved that when pigeons from a feeding flock are killed as a method of control, flock size will increase by between 12% and 30% within a matter of months, further entrenching the problem.

Pigeon feeding is a people problem which largely encourages pigeon population growth.

Pigeon feeding is a people problem which largely encourages pigeon population growth.

So what is the answer?  It must therefore be concluded that ‘pigeon problems’ are, in reality, ‘people problems’ and must be dealt with as such.
