Two patients have died at a hospital after contracting a fungal infection linked to pigeon droppings.
The individuals are thought have caught the airborne disease at the Queen Elizabeth University hospital in Glasgow after inhaling the fungus cryptococcus, typically found in soil and pigeon droppings.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), which runs the hospital, has launched an investigation into the outbreak. It said the likely source of the pigeon droppings was a non-public room, thought to contain machinery, which has now been cleaned.
NHSGGC said “control measures” had been introduced, which is understood to mean equipment to filter the air in some parts of the hospital, and that some patients, including children, who may be vulnerable to the disease have received medication, which was proving effective.
The health board said that the second patient who died was elderly and the death was due to an unrelated matter. It said it could not share further details of the case because of patient confidentiality.
Teresa Inkster, NHSGGC lead consultant for infection control, said: “Cryptococcus lives in the environment throughout the world. It rarely causes infection in humans. People can become infected with it after breathing in the microscopic fungi, although most people who are exposed to it never get sick from it.”
She said there had been no further cases since control measures were put in place. “We are continuing to monitor the air quality and these results are being analysed. It remains our priority to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff,” she added.
Portable air filters have been installed to help reassure “vulnerable patients”, NHSGGC said, adding that the organism is “harmless to the vast majority of people and rarely causes disease in humans”. A group of hospital patients are being moved within the hospital “due to their clinical diagnosis and ongoing treatment”.

Prior to this past weekend I had never heard of pigeon bowling. Who has? Even upon learning about it, I thought it was a joke. But then I saw the footage, from the Harrow Fair in Essex, Ont., shared across social and news media over the last few days.
And there it was. Fair-goers, including children, intently watching as competitors roll live birds into balls and toss them along the ground. The birds flutter and flap to a stop, their place marked by a judge.
It could be comical if not so dumbfounding, so disturbing. And I’m not the only one who thinks so. Not surprisingly, the footage and news stories went viral. The shock was immediate and the online vitriol continues today.
How could such an obviously ridiculous — obviously wrong — event be taking place, not in some foreign place we can chalk up to different cultural standards, but right in our own backyard?
I am not a pigeon expert, and those who claim to be, in this case, state this particular type of bird rolls naturally, that they are bred for this and are treated well. I’m sure most of these folks aren’t actually animal abusers. They’ve likely been watching and participating in this event their whole lives. And now, to have their wholesome event infiltrated, their traditions exposed for all to see, it must be jarring.
But it’s certainly necessary. Because the time has come for country fairs to change.
Another classic fair event, the pig scramble, has also come under well-deserved scrutiny in recent years. The event, which typically sees children frantically chasing and capturing terrified piglets, was cancelled at one PEI fair in 2017. The famous Sonoma County Fair in California also cancelled its recently, due to animal welfare concerns. Instead, pig chasing has been replaced with a slippery watermelon obstacle course.
As a culture, we are waking up to the fact that using animals in these ways is wrong.
And just as keeping captive whales and dolphins was recently banned in Canada and animal circuses are being barred by more and more municipalities across the country, it’s time for unethical fair events, including pigeon bowling and pig wrestling, to also go the way of the dodo.
The issue is not even whether or not these types of events are cruel. The issue is, whether it’s a massive whale at Marineland, or a small pigeon at the Harrow Fair, there simply is no ethical argument to justify exploiting animals for our silly entertainment.
Not anymore. We just know too much now. We know animals can experience stress and fear. We know animals are individuals with their own natural needs and desires.
This may be a tough pill to swallow, for the farming-4H-country crowd, but ultimately, this change is good. Values and traditions and knowledge can evolve for the better. You can, too.

The Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC) found a pigeon with singed feathers and “scorched shut” eyes following an explosion under a downtown Toronto bridge late last month.
On Nov. 26, emergency crews responded to Bathurst Street and Fort York Boulevard just after 11 p.m., following reports of an explosion underneath the bridge.
Videos circulated on social media with loud noises and heavy plumes of smoke billowing from the bridge.
No human injuries were reported, but TWC says a pigeon was unable to escape from the flames unharmed.
“Several days after the explosion, Ariel spotted this helpless pigeon walking along the pavement,” TWC said in a Facebook post shared Friday. “His precious feathers were all singed and his typically bright orange eyes were scorched shut, leaving him practically blind.”
Ariel, whose last name was not shared in the post, called TWC’s wildlife hotline, where the bird was quickly admitted.
Upon medical inspection, one of TWC’s wildlife rehabilitation managers saw the pigeon had burns all over his body, and wings. There were even some marks inside the bird’s mouth, the centre said.
“With a gentle touch, she cleaned his wounds and gave him antibiotics to prevent infection and medicine to ease his pain,” the post reads.
A warm compress helped the bird to open his eyes again, but TWC says he will still need some treatment to heal fully.
“We are so grateful for those in the community who show pigeons the compassion they deserve,” the organization said. “This little patient will continue to receive the care he needs until he’s ready to fly again.”

It’s a hobby that’s a little out of the ordinary, but those who race pigeons love it.
The Calgary Racing Pigeon Club was established in 1904 and today has upwards of 30 members.
President David McKop says member numbers are down from a few years ago because not as many young people are getting involved.
McKop says he grew up with pigeons and has been around them now for over 60 years.
He started in Zimbabwe watching his father’s passion and when he moved to England he continued raising homing pigeons and that extended to Canada in 2000 when he moved here.
“You’d be surprised that pigeon racing – you’ll find it everywhere, there’s no country that doesn’t have pigeon racing”, said McKop.
He now has around 100 pigeons that he’s training for a weekend race.
The birds are released from Field, B.C. and are judged on the time it takes them to get back to his northwest Calgary home.
“They’re probably one of the smartest birds in the world eh, they get boxed up in crates and taken 100s of miles in a trailer and let out there and they fly back,” McKop said.
Timing gear can cost upwards of $800 and good homing pigeons can range in price from $50 to $1000.
Many racers have a ‘loft’ to house their pigeons right in their back yard.
Alisar Alnahawi, 14, is learning about racing pigeons from her dad.
“Pigeons are sweet, people I know when I mention my pigeons they’re like ‘oh street rats you know’, but they aren’t street rats they’re amazing”, said Alnahawi.
The Calgary Racing Pigeon Club is hopeful more teens like Alnahawi get involved in the hobby so Calgary’s club can continue for another century.

“You’ve been flying for six years and you’ve thought ‘I’ve spent half my life asking where these things go’.”
Where do the pigeons go?
Mr Vanderveen said there were many theories within the pigeon racing fraternity, especially as to why some birds went missing.
“The magnetic pull of the Earth, solar flares, 5G towers, mobile phones — when you compact it all together it could be a bit of everything,” he said.
The Federal Government’s Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) researches and monitors the effects of mobile phone towers.
Assistant director of the agency’s assessment and advice section, Ken Karipidis, has assessed the effects of radio waves on animals.
He said while birds use natural electromagnetic fields, or radio waves, to help with navigation, there was no research that showed the impact of radio or mobile phone towers on a bird’s orientation.
“Mobile phone towers and other wireless telecommunications sources, including 5G, emit low-level radiofrequency electromagnetic fields which are also called radio waves,” Dr Karipidis said.
“It’s well established that some animals, including birds such as pigeons, rely on natural electromagnetic fields as one of a number of parameters believed to be used for orientation and navigational cues.
“However, there is no established evidence that radio waves from telecommunications sources disrupt the orientation cues of animals which make use of a variety of mechanisms for orientation.”
But the president of the Queensland Racing Pigeon Federation, Wayne Reese, said he believed there may be a link.
“There has been a bit of upsurge in the number of birds that get lost, or get lost for a period of time,” he said.
“It could be phone towers and it pretty much coincides with that.
“It seems to have corresponded with around the time mobile phones started. We had a pick-up in the amount of losses.
“We don’t really know why [pigeons] know their way home so it could be something like [phone tower signals] that interferes with them.”
Man-made factors, natural predators to blame
Golo Maurer, from Birdlife Australia’s Key Biodiversity Areas project, said he was unaware of any evidence that signals from mobile phone towers disrupted a bird’s navigational sense.
Dr Maurer has done extensive studies into wild bird migration and believes variations in the Earth’s magnetic field could be sending pigeons off course.
But he believed urban development, resulting in habitat loss, was a more likely factor.
“Our landscape is more and more built-up … probably in the same timeframe that people have been worrying about pigeons not returning. We’ve lost 60 per cent of some native birds in some areas,” Dr Maurer said.
“It’s hard to think they’re not going to be entirely unaffected by the destruction of nature that has also affected their wild counterparts.”

Dr Maurer said urban development reduced the opportunities for pigeons to rest or feed en route, while window strikes, which kill millions of birds worldwide every year, could be another possibility.
He suggested the prevalence of natural predators had also increased, in particular the peregrine falcon, since the use of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) was banned.
Mr Vanderveen agreed.
“When you look at all the data that’s out there, the peregrine falcon is high on the list,” he said.
“They’re targeting pigeons. They’re not silly, they know the seasons that they come through.”
Fliers hopeful of return to racing
Pigeon racing is one of many sports to have its wings clipped due to the coronavirus pandemic, but news that Queensland’s social distancing rules are starting to relax has caused a flutter of excitement.
Travel restrictions made it especially hard for fliers to get their avian athletes race-fit, with training limited to the loft.
But Mr Vanderveen is grateful he can travel up to 50 kilometres from today.
“That’s part of the process … that’ll give them the fitness to fly back home,” he said.
“You do that a few times and that’ll give them the fitness to do a 100 kilometre race.”
Queensland’s racing season is traditionally launched in early May but will be pushed back until groups can gather.

Fancy a pigeon as a pet? They’re about to be legal again in the District of North Vancouver.
District council members voted 5-0 Monday night in favour of new bylaw governing domestic pigeons. It caps off a controversial two-year chapter for council, which originally voted to ban the pet birds in 2019.
Soon after, it came to light that Coun. Betty Forbes had lobbied Couns. Lisa Muri and Megan Curren behind the scenes to introduce the ban after years of complaints about her neighbour’s flock of pet pigeons.
In February 2020, former information and privacy commissioner David Loukidelis released his report into the matter following an independent review. Among other things, he recommended that council shore up their training in ethics and oversight.
Council rescinded the ban last fall and sought to replace it with a modernized version of the district’s original bylaw dating back to 1971. The new bylaw passed Monday night limits the number of backyard squabs to 20 and governs the minimum size and setbacks for their roosts. It also makes enforcement easier for bylaw staff.
Coun. Jordan Back, one of the two council members who opposed the prohibition bylaw, said he was glad to see things largely put back to the way they were.
“This has certainly been a long and very costly process – something that never should have been brought forward in the first place. We were never dealing with a community concern,” he said.
Despite the independent investigation and now abandoned lawsuits, Coun. Mathew Bond said he feels the community is still owed some accountability for the whole “frivolous” process.
“I think that leaving those issues unresolved over the long term is detrimental to the integrity of this council,” he said.
When council held a special meeting on the matter last week, only three members of the community spoke out: two who argued pigeons are a threat to public health and one who said she had no problem’s living next to her own neighbour’s flock.
Mayor Mike Little said his view that pet pigeons are better suited to more rural communities had not changed, but he also found the public health arguments “spurious at best.”
“I think it’s fair to say that this is a pragmatic solution to the problem at hand,” he said.
Similarly, Curren said she has the same perspective on animal rights now as she did when she voted in favour of the prohibition.
“But I am opposed to the process, and I advocated for this bylaw to be brought back to a public process in since Nov. of 2019,” she said, noting that council did “fall short” of the district’s code of ethics. “When we have an opportunity to listen and to learn and to do better, then we need to do that.”
Coun. Jim Hanson, who also originally voted in favour of the ban, said with only two or three known pigeon fanciers in the district, the issue wasn’t worth any more of council’s time.
“If the keeping of pigeons becomes a community issue justifying further involvement, no doubt we will hear about that,” he said.
Muri and Forbes both recused themselves from the discussion and vote.

Hyderabad: Pigeon breeding is fast catching up among a section of the youth in the city. The age-old ‘Nawabi’ hobby remains a hit among pigeon lovers even today. However, the sport has today taken a different turn, becoming more of a commercial hit.
A favorite pastime in the past, pigeon rearing today is done for commercial purposes, and deals are fixed through Whatsapp groups. Pigeon breeders in Hyderabad say the hobby has highly increased from about half a decade ago, with youngsters looking towards to make quick money, rather than indulging in it as a hobby.
Pigeons of fancy breeds fetch a handsome price, and the focus is on breeding and rearing the fantail species in Hyderabad, say breeders. Some of the pigeons known for their appearance are Fantail, Jacobin, Frill Back Pigeon, and Indian Gola.
“Social media platforms have opened a big market to sell or purchase the pigeons. Online advertisements portals, facebook and Whatsapp pages are an added advantage,” said Mohd Taher, a pigeon breeder from Chanchalguda in Hyderabad.
Regular updates of the sale of pigeons in Hyderabad are posted on Meta (Facebook) pages or several Whatsapp groups formed by the pigeon breeders. “Pigeon breeders from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana are members of the groups. Deals are fixed and the payment made while taking the bird,” said Yousuf Khan, a pigeon breeder from Misrigunj.
A pair of the pigeons cost between Rs 600 and Rs 10,000 depending upon the demand and breed. The fancier the bird and species, the higher their price. According to locals, there are about 300 pigeon-breeders in the Old City of Hyderabad. However, there are others who also like keeping the bird in their homes for show.
Pigeon Racing
Fancy pigeons are showcased in homes for hobby while the Homer Pigeon, popularly called Girebaz, are used for racing. These pigeons are also called ‘messenger pigeons’, as they were even used to send emergency communications until 2002. “Pigeon racing is organized periodically between November and February when the skies are clear. Races begin in the early hours of the day and end by evening,” said Abdul Sohail, a breeder from Bibi ka Chasma in Hyderabad.
Participants bring their pigeons after feeding them well, and release them on race day. “The flying hours of each pigeon are calculated, the one that flies the longest duration is the winner,” Sohail added. When it comes to pigeon racing in Hyderabad, technological advancement has also made monitoring quite easy.
“While releasing the pigeon, a photograph of the place where the bird is released is shot and latitude and longitude are marked. The distance is calculated and when the bird returns to the base and a picture is taken again,” a member of a racing group explained to Siasat.com. Homers are a breed of pigeons fit for racing when they are between eight months and five-years-old.
Another popular event is the Tugudi (flock) racing in which two or more participants release their flock of pigeons simultaneously into the sky. “It is more like checking the allegiance of the other flock. The flock which brings along other participating pigeons is judged the winner,” says Shahbaz, a pigeon breeder from Chandrayangutta in Hyderabad.
Pigeon rearing and racing is usually done in the areas of in Misrigunj, Bandlaguda, Chanchalguda, Golconda, Falaknuma, Shahalibanda, Hassan Nagar Tallabkatta, and Shaheennagar in Hyderabad.

This time of year, males are proclaiming their territories calling loudly: “Whoo-whoo”
Doves and pigeons are birds that, for the most part, can be found out in the open and sitting on wires. And they are good-sized – no squinting at tiny songbirds this week.
The first bird to mention, and then pass by without much comment, is the very common Rock Dove. This is the bird that usually comes to mind when someone says “pigeon;” the bird that brings to mind the image of feeding popcorn to birds in the park. They have a wide variety of colors, but the most common is two-tone gray. They’re often seen on the ground where they confidently stride along. They are medium-sized birds, about 13,” with a 20” wingspan. They have short stubby black tails, a white rump patch, and white underwings. They fly with wings held up in a deep “V.”
Look for them at freeway interchanges, on city sidewalks, or sitting on utility poles or flying into nest sites under bridges.
Not an owl
Each year in the spring someone asks me about the owl they hear hooting in the trees. It seems they are hearing this calling in the daytime and are confused. However, it is not an owl at all, but rather our resident Band-tailed Pigeon. This time of year, males are proclaiming their territories calling loudly, “Whoo-whoo,” and it does sound owl-like. They are about the same size as a Rock Dove, more uniformly gray, but are usually tough to spot as they whoo-whoo way up there in their top-of-tree lofts. When they fly, it’s usually only a pair (there are always lots of Rock Doves) and they are gray all over (no white underwing for them).
Mourning Doves perhaps fit the image you have of a dove as opposed to a pigeon. They are smaller and much slimmer. They are tannish overall with black spots and have a long, pointed tail with white tips on the outer tail feathers. In flight, these white tips produce an obvious white streak along either side of the tail. These birds are found throughout the county in rural area, often perched on utility wires. They’re grain and seed eaters and readily come to feeders. They are named after their vocalization, a low mournful coo, often written “ooo, aaa, cooo, cooooo.”
And here’s an amazing story: I have a bird book published in 2000 that lists the Eurasian Collared-Dove as an introduced species, having a limited range along the southeast North American coast. In the intervening 20 years this species has expanded its range so rapidly it is now found throughout the United States, including here in Thurston County. Perhaps eight years ago, they were rare or non-existent here. Now they are at least as common as Mourning Doves.
Eurasian Collared-Doves are a bit larger than the Mourning Dove, and in good light they appear grayish rather than tan. They do not have black spots, but they do have a noticeable black collar around their necks. Their tails have outer white tips and are long and but not as pointed as the Mourning Dove. Their call is distinct; it’s still coo, but in a distinctive three syllable sequence with an emphasis on the second syllable.
People report that both species visit their feeders and, so far, it does not seem that the collared-doves, although a bit larger, are displacing our native doves. But this is certainly a possibility, and bird researchers no doubt will be tracking breeding and wintering numbers for these two species in the years to come.
AVIAN BIRD FLU ALERT
As you may have read, the 2022 Avian Bird Flu has been occurring in Thurston County, killing at least one Bald Eagle. If you find dead or dying birds, do not touch or interact with them in any way. If it seems warranted, contact the Washington State Department of Agriculture’s Avian Health Program: 1-800-606-3056.
To date Avian Bird Flu does not seem to be impacting smaller birds. However in the eastern U.S., where this disease is more common, people with summer feeders are being encouraged to retire their feeders for the time being as a means of limiting bird-to-bird disease transmission.
People with chickens are advised to keep them confined, and to prevent exposure to the droppings of wild birds.

BARRIE, ONT. — Joe Ferreira has been racing since 1975.
Not cars. Not horses. But pigeons.
On a race day, Ferreira takes his pigeons to a clubhouse where their electronic tracking bands are scanned and driven to a starting line. Then, they race back home.
Just like human athletes, the pigeons train for a big race. Ferreira let’s his birds go free and sees if they come back.
He says he’s built bonds with all 67 of his birds.
“Sometimes the day of a race, I look at the weather. And if the weather looks a little weird, I say ‘I don’t wanna risk losing you.’ So I keep them home,” Ferreira said.
The sport that has been around for centuries but Ferreira says it faces a lot of misconceptions.
“If you took one of those wild (pigeons), took it two blocks from the house…you would never see it again,” Ferreira says. “Those pigeons give us a bad name.”
Ferreira admits the sport is struggling to maintain interest.
“Nowadays they got all these bylaws. They won’t allow pigeons here or there. So it’s kinda killing the support. Plus, the younger generation is too busy with their video games at home.”

The 55-year-old Iron Mike, who won’t face any criminal charges for his recent scrap with an airline passenger, befriended the legend during the height of his own iconic boxing career.
Now it appears that the former world champion has started a friendship with the late star’s grandson Nico Ali Walsh.
The youngster, 21, is already on his way to creating his own legacy inside the ring.
He holds a 5-0 professional record after his latest victory in Las Vegas.
Now it looks like he has been picking the brains of Tyson in order to further help him in his own quest for glory by paying a visit to the Baddest Man on the Planet’s home.
But it was not only boxing advice that Tyson had in store for the prospect.
During the visit, the much-publicised animal lover decided to let Walsh meet his famous pigeon collection.
And Walsh shared footage of him being taught how to hold the birds by Tyson inside the bird loft at his house.
The American has been smitten with the birds ever since he was nine.
Back in 2020 he posted a video of himself relaxing and feeding his pets ahead of his exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr.
He has always had a love for pigeons, and revealed that it was the honour of one that drew his first punch as a ten-year-old.
He said in the past: “The guy ripped the head off my pigeon. This was the first thing I ever loved in my life, the pigeon.
“That was the first time I threw a punch.
“I have loved pigeons since I was nine. They were my escape.
“I was fat and ugly. Kids teased me all the time. The only joy I had was pigeons.”

To some, they’re a flying nuisance but pigeons are a big business in Senegal.
From his roof in a suburb of the capital Dakar, shopkeeper and pigeon racer Moustapha Gueye releases dozens of birds from the loft, who quickly fly out of sight.
“Here it’s a factory, I’m creating athletes,” he says.
He takes care of his winged friends every morning by training them and developing crossbreeds suitable for flying in hot weather.
“It is a sport created by Europeans, it was imported here. We discovered pigeon racing through the internet. But before we use to be pigeon breeders only,” Gueye says.
Though more popular across the continent, it is a growing sport in the West African country.
Today, there are some 350 pigeon racing enthusiasts in Senegal, who spend a lot of money. A pigeon can cost over 800 US dollars in the country.
“Currently I’m doing business with pigeons. I’ve earned several million CFA francs selling pigeons, I even bought a car through those pigeons,” he says.
“But the most important thing for me is the passion.
“It’s exciting to have pigeons, when you start participating in races, releasing a pigeon 400 km from its loft and it comes back, that’s something you can’t explain, it’s great!”
Taking flight
Pigeon racing has clearly taken flight in Senegal and continues to spread its wings.
Senegalese pigeon-racing enthusiasts are keen to turn others on to the sport, and some hope to ultimately turn professional.
But breeder and pigeon racer Oumar Johnson says some people take their dedication too far.
“When you’re too busy with pigeons, things risk going badly,” he says, adding that the pigeon-fanciers’ federation is considering less time-consuming races for youngsters.
Young people are nonetheless the future of the sport, Johnson says, adding that their devotion will make Senegal “one of the greatest pigeon-racing nations” one day.
“In Europe, you have to motivate young people to get involved,” he says.

Dartmouth has a problem with pigeons and their droppings.
“They’re literally pooping in the lake,” said Emma Wattie, a water resource specialist with the Halifax Regional Municipality.
Feces from pigeons that roost under a bridge along Highway 111, between Lake Banook and Lake Micmac, has been identified as one of the bacteria sources in the water.
“There’s no barrier underneath, the bridge is essentially a throughway from the old canal system, the Shubenacadie Canal,” said Wattie. “Birds are literally roosting and their feces is entering the water.”
“There are hundreds of pigeons roosting underneath there,” said Jim Hunter, an environmental risk and compliance specialist with the municipality.
“It’s not only an environmental issue with the lake, it’s a problem for the paddlers as well going underneath the bridge.”
The municipality plans to force the pigeons out by installing environmentally friendly bird netting.
“It’s a nylon mesh, very fine mesh, that’ll keep any birds of any size in this area out and that way they won’t be able to roost any longer in that location,” said Hunter.
The project is expected to cost about $175,000 and will take four-to-six weeks to complete. The first step is for crews to clean and disinfect the entire underside of the bridge.
“The ultimate goal is that we have the pigeons roosting somewhere else — not under the bridge,” said Sam Austin, the area councillor.
“You think about that bridge, it’s not a natural environment, I mean a pigeon would maybe (roost) on a cliff, in a tree, something like this, normally, but under that bridge is pretty much a direct path from bird to lake.”
Vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area will be unaffected while crews install the netting.
“For the people who paddle, or boat, on the lake, I would just urge you to be very cautious when you’re going through there, because one side is going to be closed and then they’ll flip to the other side and then the other side will close, so for the duration of construction, one of the lanes under the bridge is closed to boating,” said Austin.
It’s hoped less pigeons and what they leave behind will lead to fewer beach closures in the summer.

That pigeon in your neighborhood may not be your typical bird. Seattle Animal Control Officer Kevin Mack reports several “banded” pigeons found in the city recently.
“We’ve received at least two banded racing pigeons in the last couple weeks,” said Mack. “And I’ve had at least three sightings of banded birds that were moving through the city.
“These birds are essentially identical to local feral pigeons you see in the city, Rock Pigeons. But they really are domesticated birds and they usually have owners that want them back.”
People who race pigeons usually have a coop at their residence. They raise the birds, register them with their organization of choice, and then race them.
The race consists of driving the pigeon a pre-determined distance from their coop, setting them loose, and then seeing how long it takes them to return. Some pigeons are better at homing than others so sometimes they get lost on their way back. Other times they get injured or just plain tired.
The American Racing Pigeon Union is one of the most popular pigeon racing groups. You can tell the pigeons belong to someone who belongs to the group because they have bands on their legs with the letters “AU” on them.
The site also has good information about how to read the information on the band and some links to other organizations for birds with other types of bands.
The pigeon that is being sheltered at the Seattle Animal Shelter is from Jeanerett, Louisiana because its band includes the local club code. “2022” is the bird’s hatch year and the long number found on the other side of the band is the bird’s unique identifier.

RENO, Nev. – Last month, a couple of pigeons strutting through Las Vegas wearing cowboy hats captured the attention of the nation. They also apparently captured the attention of some Reno copy cats.
In a tweet posted Wednesday morning, Reno City Manager Sabra Newby reported finding a pigeon in northeast Reno wearing a tiny sombrero.
“I look out the window and there’s a bunch of pigeons and one of them has a hat on,” Newby said. “Who knew. In Reno now we have pigeons with hats.”
Newby had been on a ride-along with the city’s parking enforcement team checking on abandoned vehicles when she saw the poor bird.
The Las Vegas pigeons became famous last month after a Facebook video went viral. Two of the birds earned the nicknames Coolamity Jane and Cluck Norris, inspiring a parody country song and entertaining social media commentary, as well as national media attention.
But Newby said she was dismayed that someone in Reno would harm pigeons here. One of the behatted pigeons in Las Vegas recently died.
“It’s not really that funny,” Newby said. “Because somebody captured the pigeon and ostensibly glued it on. We don’t support that kind of activity.”
Newby said she reported the pigeon to Washoe County Regional Animal Control Services.
“Reno cares about our animals,” she said in a written statement. “They need protection and don’t need to become a punchline.”
While Washoe County Regional Animal Control has no jurisdiction over wild animals, the director urged people not to glue things to pigeons.
“Washoe County Regional Animal Services finds this practice of affixing any objects on wild birds disturbing, inhumane and strongly discourages this type of behavior,” agency director Shyanne Schull said in a statement.

And a peculiar story in the British Columbia news got even more peculiar.
The interesting tale involves a Cariboo resident, a young guy on a bike and a crow “attack” in Vancouver, a video on the Internet, multiple news reports about that video, and now, contradictory stories about where this simultaneously pesky and charming bird named, Crow, with no fear of people and an orange zip tie around its foot, really came from.
According to reports, East Vancouver locals say the crow in question fell from its nest as a baby and people there nursed it back to health.
The crow stuck around and now it’s like their friendly neighbourhood crow, a sort of precocious feathered mascot of the community, hanging out at racetracks and soccer fields, entertaining children, flying around and brazenly pecking items from people’s pockets.
The bird apparently goes by many names down in the Lower Mainland: Crackers, Mr. Jack, Canuck and Jerome.
An East Vancouver resident who was featured in the reports calls him Crow. This is what Pigeon, a 108 Mile Ranch resident, calls him, too.
But Crow was raised in the Cariboo, Pigeon claims, not in Vancouver.
The way Pigeon tells it, hefound Crow in the spring at his parent’s farm near Clinton. The baby bird fell from its nest and Pigeon’s son, Steven, took care of it when the family brought it home to 108 Mile Ranch, and raised it like a pet.
“It learned how to fly eventually,” says Pigeon. “It flew around our house and visited our neighbours and they got to know him.
“He just kept coming back. Eventually, he disappeared.”
Before the bird went missing around August, Pigeon tied an orange zip tie around its left foot to distinguish it from other crows in his yard.
Pigeon says there’s no doubt the crow on the news is the same crow. After all, he asks, what are the chances there are two strikingly social, heart-winning crows flying around B.C. – with the same colour zip tie on the same foot?
Reached via e-mail and asked about the likelihood of Pigeon’s crow being the same crow in the Vancouver news reports, Tom Dickinson, Dean of Science at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, says the orange strap on the bird’s leg is “a perfect match” and he suspects it is the same bird and Pigeon’s story is true.
“Only two ways to get there: fly or hitch hike,” explains Dickinson, whose research includes bird communities in high elevation forests.
“It isn’t that far to go, especially if there is favourable wind and weather. But given how tame this [crow] looks, it is at least equally likely he was foraging inside a truck bed (or the like) and maybe didn’t get out before the door slammed and found himself in Kerrisdale.”
Pigeon shares a similar theory. But no matter how the bird made its way south, he just hopes Crow eventually makes his way back up to the Cariboo, and hopes no one hurts him in the meantime.
“If he seems to be a pain the butt, the main thing is ignore him and he’ll find someone else. If you feed him, he’s going to continue staying around.
“If he’s in 100 Mile, let me know,” Pigeon adds.
“He’s more than welcome around our house. We enjoyed having him around.”

Today, a Vancouver Island woman got the feathered reunion she’s been waiting six weeks for.
Sandy Bird lost her pet pigeon, Tweetie, in October, when the bird flew away, as it does, and landed on the wrong truck. The truck drove away and Bird was left without her pigeon.
To Bird’s distress, her bird wound up in a wildlife centre. The centre’s rules prohibited staff from releasing the pigeon back into Bird’s care. She tried to get her pigeon back, but instead it was released into the wild. The centre couldn’t tell Bird where or when Tweetie was being released.
This morning, Tweetie was spotted in a mall parking lot.
Bird said she looked for hours since the break of dawn for the bird in shopping centres and parks throughout Nanaimo.
Staff at a Chemainus office were keeping an eye out for the bird. Office worker Anita Morrill saw Tweetie through the window.
“He jumped down as soon as I saw him,” she said.
Staff called Sandy and told her to come collect her pet pigeon.
Bird said the pigeon is like a son to her.
“I am the happiest woman in the world. If I won the lotto I couldn’t be happier,” she said.
Bird said she would like to thank the viewers and listeners of CHEK TV and CBC radio.
“They’re the reason and you’re the reason he’s back,” said Bird.

A young woman in Fredericton is singing on the street to call attention to the disease that made her blind.
Erica Richards lost her sight last year after developing Cryptococcus meningitis.
Cryptococcus meningitis is a potentially fatal swelling of the membranes surrounding the brain. The disease is caused by fungus that lives in the guts of pigeons and other birds, such as chickens.
People can breathe it in if they’re exposed to pigeon droppings.
The 24-year-old was living in a house that had a pile of pigeon feces in the attic, and she also had a compromised immune system from chemotherapy .
“A reverse migraine — I needed light, I needed sound. I needed neck massages. Couldn’t lay down, couldn’t sit up. Couldn’t eat. I was vomiting. And then I started having double vision, quadruple vision, then seizures. And then I ended up in hospital,” she said as she described her symptoms.
Richards sings to supplement her $135 a month disability payment.
Kevin Forward is an infectious disease specialist who teaches at Dalhousie Medical School in Halifax.
“I think it’s pretty common sense. Move to avoid being in a situation where there are a lot of pigeon droppings, particularly if you’re disturbing them, cleaning them up, sweeping them,” Forward said.
“Those kind of situations should certainly be avoided. But if you’re in the park that has some pigeons around, I think the risk is infinitely small.”
Pigeons are part of the urban landscape, but they are known to carry a long list of disease-causing organisms — such as Chlamydia and salmonella.
That, along with complaints about them damaging roofs, led Fredericton to add pigeons to the city’s animal control bylaw last year.
Property owners are now prohibited from spreading feed or anything else that would attract pigeons.
Richards wants to make sure people know the risk of coming into contact with pigeon feces.
“To draw attention, to raise awareness so people will ask questions, so they will know what the symptoms are,” Richards said. “So that way, they can be warned ahead of time, before what happened to me happens to them.”
Next month, she’ll be going to a school sponsored by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind to finish high school and to get matched with a seeing-eye dog.
She hopes to go on to study law.

A racing pigeon from Belgium has set a new world record after being sold for more than £1.4million.
New Kim, a three-year-old female, was initially put up for auction for just €200, but after a two-week bidding war she fetched a staggering €1.6 million.
During a frantic last half-hour, two Chinese bidders operating under the pseudonyms of Super Duper and Hitman drove up the price by £251,000 (€280,000). Super Duper submitted the winning bid.

The news of a pigeon detained in India on suspicion of being used to spy for Pakistan was met with amusement on both sides of the border – and encouraged Pakistanis to share memes and jokes making fun of their neighbours.
It all started when a 14-year-old boy in an Indian village close to the border with Pakistan found a white pigeon with a message written partly in Urdu, the language widely used in Pakistan, and some numbers in on its feathers. The bird was taken to police who ordered the bird to be X-rayed. Nothing suspicious turned up, but the pigeon was registered in police logs as a “suspected spy” according to reports.
The area where the bird was found is close to Kashmir, claimed by both India and Pakistan and the scene of cross-border military confrontation.
“This is a rare instance of a bird from Pakistan being spotted here. We have caught a few spies here. The area is sensitive, given its proximity to Jammu, where infiltration is quite common,” local police superintendent Rakesh Kaushal told the Times of India.
India and Pakistan frequently accuse each other of spying. This week, the Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed concern over the actions of foreign intelligence agencies in Pakistan – which many saw as an allusion to India. But the official detention of a bird led to amusement and sarcasm on both sides of the border.
In Pakistan, pictures were created to mock the Indian authorities and portray the humble pigeon as a suave modern-day spy. The hashtags #PigeonVsIndia and #IfIWereAPigeon have been mentioned tens of thousands of times. Both hashtags appear to be promoted by two social media teams who actively seek to create Twitter trends, and identify themselves as supporters of Pakistan’s Tehrik-i-Insaf political party.

Seventy years ago a carrier pigeon performed the act of “heroism” that saw it awarded the animal’s equivalent of the Victoria Cross – the Dickin Medal. It was the first of of dozens of animals honoured by veterinary charity PDSA during World War II.
On 23 February 1942, a badly damaged RAF bomber ditched into the North Sea.
The crew were returning from a mission over Norway, but their Beaufort Bomber had been hit by enemy fire and crashed into the sea more than 100 miles from home.
Struggling in freezing waters – unable to radio an accurate position back to base – the four men faced a cold and lonely death.
But as the aircraft went down, the crew had managed to salvage their secret weapon – a carrier pigeon. The blue chequered hen bird, called Winkie, was set free in the hope it could fly home to its loft in Broughty Ferry, near Dundee, and so alert air base colleagues to their predicament.
During World War II, carrier pigeons were routinely carried by RAF bombers for this very eventuality, though in an era before GPS and satellite locator beacons, rescue was far from certain.
But Winkie did make it home, after flying 120 miles, and was discovered, exhausted and covered in oil by owner George Ross who immediately informed RAF Leuchars in Fife.
The pigeon was not carrying a message, but the RAF were able to calculate the position of the downed aircraft using the time difference between the plane’s ditching and the arrival of the bird – taking into account the wind direction and even the impact of the oil on Winkie’s feathers to her flight speed.
A rescue mission was launched and the men were found within 15 minutes.
Elaine Pendlebury, from the PDSA, said the carrier pigeon had been released as a “last ditch stand” when the crew realised they had no other options.
“I find it very, very moving really. These people would have died without this pigeon message coming through,” said Ms Pendlebury.
Winkie became the toast of the air base, with a dinner held in her honour. A year later, she became the first animal to receive the Dickin Medal – named after PDSA’s founder Maria Dickin – for “delivering a message under exceptional difficulties”.
More than 60 animals have since received the award, including 18 dogs, three horses and one cat. But pigeons still rule the medal roost, with 32 being given medals, all between 1943 and 1949.
“It’s very hard for us with mobile phones and emails and things like that to think about the way communication would have happened in the 1940s in wartime,” Ms Pendlebury told BBC Scotland.
“It was very difficult and the pigeons certainly saved numerous lives by flying through really dreadful situations.”
One pigeon, called GI Joe, was an American bird which saved more than 1,000 lives when it got a message through that a village about to be bombed had actually been recaptured by British forces. Another – Mary of Exeter – was used to send top secret messages and received 22 stitches after being injured in the course of her duties.
“I’ve been a veterinary surgeon for quite some time but I find the ones that have won the PDSA Dickin medal, the stories are quite inspiring – above and beyond really,” Ms Pendlebury added.
