Can Pigeon feeding kill you ?

Can Pigeon feeding kill you ?

Pigeon patrol diseasesPigeon Patrol would like to know if feeding the pigeon’s can kill you ?

This is what one reporter says:  The 1960s movie “Mary Poppins” immortalised it with “Feed the birds, tuppence a bag” but beware – what 42-year-old Balwant Singh and many do-gooders in the capital and elsewhere practice every morning – feeding pigeons grain – could lead to compromising their health and hygiene of the surrounding area.

Feeding birds is slowly turning into a new fad in the city. Be it the space under flyovers, or the path for pedestrians and even roads – they have become places for people to throw food. Besides dirtying the place, the flocks of flapping pigeons can cause nuisance and most importantly, pose health concerns.

“The exposure to accumulations of pigeon droppings can cause an allergic reaction called the ‘Bird Fancier’s disease’ – an acute respiratory infection affecting the lungs of an individual,” Vivek Nangia, respiratory medicine hed at Fortis Healthcare, told IANS.

The disease is characterised by dry cough, breathlessness and fatigue and could also lead to fever.

“Diagnosing the problem becomes very difficult. Such symptoms of dry cough and breathlessness are often attributed to asthma, but if there is an exposure to pigeon droppings then the patients should mention it,” added Nangia.

People can also get fungal infections like Histoplasmosis and Cryptoccosis that spreads from old and dry droppings.

“Histoplasmosis is transmitted to humans by airborne fungus spores from soil contaminated by pigeon and starling droppings. While cryptoccosis is typically found in accumulations of droppings around roosting and nesting sites,” he said.

Doctors advise that the droppings should be cleaned immediately. It is also highly recommended that people cleaning it should take preventive measures and the droppings should be collected in garbage bags and disposed.

“People with weak immune system are more prone to get affected by infections from the birds. So they should wear masks and moisten the droppings with a light mist of water to keep spores from becoming airborne and keep them wet,” Manchanda said.

“The food that people give to the birds is also eaten by other animals that share the urban space. Hence they could also be eating the faeces of the birds which is detrimental for their health,” Jaya Simha, managing director, Humane Society International (HSI), told IANS.

Pigeon’s Take over Bridge!!

Pigeon’s Take over Bridge!!

Pigeon Patrol has cleaned up several bridges and know how this city feels:pigeon Patrol Bridge
WICHITA, Kan. -Eric Wittman walks to work from his downtown Wichita apartment. He passes under the Douglas Street bridge twice a day. “It’s filthy. It’s dirty. I’ve been hit by pigeons,” said Wittman.Wittman says the pigeons are causing a stinky problem in the underpass. “They’ve pooped on me twice.”

That’s why he and many other downtown residents want to see some upgrades to the area.

Wittman says people choose to drive between the two areas.

“I think if you were able to get rid of the pigeons, lighten it up, make it feel safe, I think a lot can be done to make this a place that people would want to travel,” said Wittman.

Some of the most popular ideas for the upgraded underpass include interactive LED lighting and event promotions.

One year of Sleepless nights due to Pigeons.

Droppings Pigeon PatrolWe wish the staff at Pigeon Patrol could have helped this couple sleep sooner. A couple said they have endured 12 months of sleepless nights and deteriorating health due to dozens of noisy pigeons setting up home beneath solar panels on their roof.

Stephen Fishenden and wife Linda, 65, of Wittenham Way in Chingford, say they have lived through “hell” since the birds began to seek above the energy-saving panels, which were fitted by a contractor.Mr Fishenden first complained to Ascham Homes in March last year about the “horrendous” noise keeping them awake at night and his wife’s deteriorating health.

The 65 year-old said: “I specifically asked at the time if we would have any problems with birds and was reassured they would not be a problem.”We are both constantly awake and have had hundreds of sleepless nights. It is particularly horrendous in the morning.”

Pigeon dropping removal

Following further complaints, the couple said a contractor visited the property in late November and told them he would provide a quote for the scaffold tower, but never returned.

She said: “Mr Fishenden contacted Ascham Homes at the end of March last year about the issue with pigeons nesting under the solar panels at his property. “One of our contractors visited the property shortly afterwards to inspect and recommend the appropriate bird-proofing measures.

Mr Fishenden described the response is a “complete fabrication”, insisting the contractor did not visit the property until nine months later.

We are wishing the best for this couple and hope that they move to a hotel until the birds are vacated.

Pigeon Patrol Releases the new TubeSonic

Pigeon Patrol Releases the new TubeSonic

Tube sonic pigeon patrolImagine chasing away pests like pigeons and loitering teenagers with an ultrasonic device you can control from your computer or smartphone.

While it may seem like some kind of a dream, it was on display at the Buildex Vancouver trade show that’s being held Wednesday and Thursday at the Vancouver Convention Centre West.

Pigeon Patrol is based in Surrey, where it also manufactures the snazzy TubeSonic that uses sound to scare away pests — from winged to four-footed and even the two-footed, teenage variety.

Using an amplifier, speakers, a small computer and wifi interface, the TubeSonic emits frequencies from 8 kHz to 24 kHz. There are 12 different settings, plus more than 100 recorded sounds designed to “startle, confuse, disorient and intimidate.” Frequencies adults can’t even hear are used to upset the sensitive hearing of youths.

It can all be controlled remotely and set to a schedule.

The company also has a variety of other products, like weather-resistant stainless steel spikes to keep birds from landing where they shouldn’t, to an all-natural herb gel that sales manager Andrew MacBain said “smells like death” to birds.

But none of the company’s products are actually deadly.

“We’re very humane,” said MacBain.Pigeon Patrol

There are more than 425 exhibiting companies at Buildex and in excess of 60 seminars. The show was expected to attract 13,500 industry professionals from interior design, construction and real estate management.

Cleaning Up the Pigeon Droppings…..

Cleaning Up the Pigeon Droppings…..

 Pigeon Patrol DroppingsClean-up Procedures

Pigeon feces may contain bacteria and other pathogens that can cause illness. Prevent infection by avoiding direct contact with bird debris while cleaning affected areas. Keep children and pets away from areas which have accumulated bird debris.

Wear personal protection equipment (PPE) when cleaning up fecal matter

Follow these steps to clean and sanitize properly:

  • Prepare a 10 percent solution of sodium hypochlorite by mixing one part bleach with nine parts water.
  • If indoors, mist the area to settle suspended air-borne particles.
  • Soak the area with the bleach solution and leave it undisturbed for at least 10 minutes. This will disinfect and soften the droppings, making them easy to remove.
    • apply and spread the bleach solution.
    • Re-wet the area with the bleach solution if the area starts to dry during the 10 minute soak.
    • Dense accumulations of feces may require repeated applications of the bleach solution.
  • Place the debris into a doubled plastic bag (a plastic bag in another plastic bag).
    • Use a square-nosed shovel or a hoe to scrape up the debris.
    • Seal both bags.
    • Place bags in the outside trash.
  • Using dish soap or laundry detergent, scrub the area with a stiff brush or broom to remove debris from cracks and crevices. Rinse area with water.
    • A power washer can be used for this step.
  • Reapply the bleach solution and keep the area wet for another 10 minutes. Do not rinse.
    • If the treated area receives at least 4 hours of direct sun, this step can be omitted as ultraviolet light has disinfecting properties.
  • Air-dry before allowing people and pets into the area.

This procedure may not remove all stains and the use of bleach may discolor walkways, sides of building, and other structures and may cause damage to growing vegetation. Damage may be prevented by using a commercial disinfectant without sodium hypochlorite. Read label instructions before using these products.

If a sensitive area receives a considerable amount of sunlight, the disinfectant may not be necessary as the sun’s UV light works as a natural disinfectant. Physical removal of the debris is necessary. This method is also considered acceptable for areas with little or no foot traffic.

Keep children and pets away from contaminated areas until they have been cleaned, sanitized and dried.

  • If pigeon debris is in an enclosed area, such as an attic, open windows and use fans to force fresh air into the area before cleaning.
  • Leave area undisturbed to prevent air-borne particles.
  • Never handle a dead bird with your bare hands.
    • Use rubber gloves or an inverted plastic bag to pick up the bird.
    • Place the dead bird into a plastic bag, seal bag and place in an outdoor, covered trash container.
  • Clothes worn during cleaning should be washed separately in hot water. If possible use a disinfectant in the wash.

Help with getting rid of the Pigeons!!

Help with getting rid of the Pigeons!!

Pigeon Patrol is happy to pass on some Pigeon Prevention Guidelinespigeon Patrol birds

Urban pigeons are descendants of the Rock Dove, a species of pigeon domesticated by humans for food and as pets. Birds that were released or escaped became today’s city pigeons.

Pigeons can carry diseases and parasites that can be transmitted to humans, including histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis,  and psittacosis.

Pigeons have no natural enemies in urban areas and reproduce quickly. Pigeon overpopulation can lead to increased property damage and higher disease rates among pigeons. Accumulated bird debris may attract mice, rats, and flies.Pigeon droppings are as much a concern as the pigeons themselves. On average, a well-fed pigeon deposits 25 pounds of droppings a year. Pigeon feces are unsightly and can damage buildings, vehicles, trees, shrubs, lawns, benches and park fountains.

Pigeons have four basic needs in order to survive: food, shelter, the ability to reproduce, and safety from predators. If any of these basic needs are disrupted, the pigeons will move away.

Food

Pigeons will eat anything they can fit into their bill. If they cannot find food in an area, they will look for it elsewhere. Follow these steps to keep pigeons from eating at your house:

  • Don’t feed the pigeons.
  • Remove unsecured bird feeders and routinely clean up spilled seed.
  • Cover trash cans and keep area around the cans clean.
  • Don’t leave uneaten pet food outside.
  • Pick up after your pets. Pigeons will eat pet waste.
  • Empty containers of water.

Shelter

Pigeons seek shelter at night and congregate at roosting sites during the day. Pigeons feel safe in a sheltered area where they are not easily seen. In urban areas, pigeons roost in trees, abandoned structures, rafters, beams, along building eaves and awnings, and under bridges. These areas can be easily modified to discourage roosting.

  • Block access to interior roosting and nesting sites by using Ultra-flex Bird Spikes, bird netting or wire mesh.
  • Bird Spikes can be attached to any area where pigeons roost. These devices consist of a solid base with dull prongs sticking out at all angles. This prevents birds from landing.
  • Apartment residents can install sonic and ultrasonic bird repellers to deter the pigeons.Tube sonic pigeon

Breeding

Remove nests to discourage breeding. Pigeons will reuse the same nest throughout a breeding season. Keep removing any rebuilt nests. After a few failed attempts, the pigeons will nest somewhere else.

Safety

In an urban environment, pigeons have few natural predators. However, by instinct, pigeons have a fear of being preyed upon. Pigeons may be deterred from locations by hanging “frightening” devices, but these items will only deter the birds for so long.

Looks like Pigeons aren’t afraid of owls, well fake ones at the least. An owl was placed on top of a roof to keep pigeons away but it didn’t work at all. Many pigeons gathered together on top of the roof to soak up some sun. With the use of Pigeon Patrol’s bird deterrents, this wouldn’t have made it to the headlines because there wouldn’t have been any pigeons flocking together. I think the simple use of 4-S Gel would have actually scared the pigeons away.

Pigeon Patrol says that this is No joking matter!! Chinese researchers are suggesting Canada’s first H5N1 flu patient may have

contracted the bird flu virus passing through or near an illegal live bird market in Beijing.

And Canadian scientists have published a report on the full genetic sequence of virus taken from the Alberta woman, who died in early January after returning from a three-week trip to her native China.

The source of the woman’s infection has been a mystery; she spent her entire trip in Beijing, where H5N1 reportedly hasn’t been discovered for some time, and her travelling companion said she did not have contact with live birds while there.

But scientists from Beijing’s Centre for Disease Prevention and Control are hypothesizing that illegal live bird markets may have been the source of the woman’s infection.

Testing of the area around the market stall where the woman bought the duck revealed the presence of H5N1 viruses that were closely related to the ones that infected her.

As well, they note that several human infections with the newer H7N9 bird flu virus have been reported in Beijing.

The scientists suggest the illegal trade in live poultry in Beijing may pose a high risk of human infection with bird flu viruses for people living in the city.

While she had the respiratory infection that is characteristic of influenza infection, she also had evidence of meningoencephalitis, infection in the brain.

JANICE McGill tells of ‘disgusting’ experience at burger joint in Glasgow’s Queen Street.
A RETIRED nurse told yesterday how she was left in a flap – after dining with a pair of pigeons in a Burger King.                               Janice McGill, 52, was enjoying a day out in Glasgow with her cousin last week when they decided to eat in the Queen Street outlet. Janice, from Irvine, said: “There were trays and food all over the place. It was disgusting. There were two pigeons walking about on the tables and the floor, rummaging through the food wrappers.”
A Burger King spokesman said: “We take this incident extremely seriously as customer experience and satisfaction are of paramount importance to Burger King.”
Pigeon Patrol could have helped this store by supplying them with the Ultra-Flex bird or pigeon spikes or the best Ultrasonic sound unit on the market today. TubeSonic.

Pigeon Patrol clean up

Disgruntle tenant has gone to the birds

Pigeon Patrol called out to help with the roosting pigeons.

A North Vancouver man is crying foul over the effort he says he had to go through to get his landlord to deal with an unhealthy mess of pigeon poop lying inches deep outside his apartment.

“There’s certain standards they are supposed to abide by,” said Michael Ravenscroft, who rents an apartment at 107 West 1st Street.

Ravenscroft said he complained to his property management company, the City of North Vancouver and the health department for a month about the problem before anyone took notice.

“Any other situation where there’s a biohazard, they have a hazmat team come in,” said Ravenscroft. “It’s taken way too lightly.”

Ravenscroft said any time he’s called the authorities, to ask that the property owners be ordered to clean up the pigeon droppings, “They say it’s done. It’s not done.”

Ravenscroft said he first became concerned there might be a problem when he smelled something bad in one area of his apartment and couldn’t find the source, no matter how much he cleaned. It was only when he looked outside, to one of two light shafts running down the middle of the heritage building, that he realized what the problem was: layers of pigeon droppings and decomposing pigeon carcasses.

Until recently, Ravenscroft said he had a hard time getting anyone to take the issue seriously.

Pigeons, that often make nests in covered areas of buildings, are known to carry diseases that can be transferred to humans.

Pigeon droppings can carry funguses and – more rarely – an infectious disease that can be contracted by anyone breathing in dried droppings.

Paul Markey, environmental health officer for Vancouver Coastal Health, said the risk is greatest for people actually cleaning the mess rather than living near it.

Markey said a health officer met the property manager on site last week and received assurances the light shaft areas will be cleaned.

Markey added that a number of pigeon-proofing measures have already been placed around the building – including metal spikes that prevent pigeons and other birds from roosting.

He said those will now have to be added to the areas of the building above the light shafts.

Joanne Stevens of Living Balance, the property management company for the building, said she’s aware of the problem and is arranging for cleanup and further pigeon-proofing.

Andrew MacBain of Pigeon Patrol, a Lower Mainland company that specializes in bird-proofing, said he’s taken a look at the problem and will be submitting a plan to get all areas cleaned up by the end of the week.

Pigeons are a huge pest problem all over the Lower Mainland, said MacBain – roosting on ledges, apartment balconies or under awnings. MacBain said his company manufactures and installs spikes to deter the birds, as well as netting and Ultrasonic and  sonic devices that scare birds away with high-pitched frequencies as well as sounds that imitate predators.

He adds there’s no shortage of business.

Humiliated for feeding pigeons ?

Humiliated for feeding pigeons ?

It is about time Pigeon Patrol says that, some bread thrower has been fined for feeding the birds!Pigeon Patrol feeding

A PENSIONER says she was ‘humiliated’ after being issued with a fine for feeding pigeons.

The 82-year-old, from Leigh, was feeding the pigeons with bird food she had brought from the market on Bradshawgate last Monday, January 27, when she was approached by a Wigan Council environment enforcement officer.

He informed her she was in breach of section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act and issued her a fixed penalty notice for littering. Council has a zero tolerance policy towards littering and bird feeding.

Using an Ultrasonic Repeller would have shooed those pigeons away and the feeding would never had happened.

City restricts feeding pigeons and waterfowl.

City restricts feeding pigeons and waterfowl.

It is about time that Pigeon Patrol found a great story like this.Pigeon Patrol Feeding

Hempstead Town Tuesday unanimously adopted a law that restricts feeding pigeons, ducks and geese.

The town board, in a 7-0 vote, approved the law in response to complaints from residents that feeding, especially in waterfront areas, was inundating properties with birds and their droppings.

A violation of the new law is defined as feeding that attracts at least 10 birds on at least three days within a 15-day period.

Fines can be as much as $1,000 for the first violation, $2,500 for the second and $5,000 for the third, town spokesman Mike Deery said. The town crafted the law because of reports that “hundreds of birds and geese were being fed large quantities of food on a regular basis, creating a mess and even damaging the exteriors of homes in local communities,” Hempstead officials said in a statement.

The three residents who spoke at Tuesday’s public hearing on the law supported the restrictions. Jeremy Sessler of Seaford said he pushed for the law because his Ocean Avenue home sometimes has 25 to 50 birds — mostly Canada geese — on the front lawn because neighbors overfeed and attract birds. “This [the law] is good for both the residents and birds,” Sessler said after the hearing. “We now look to the town to enforce this code to protect residents.”

Can Ultrasonic sound kill you?

Can Ultrasonic sound kill you?

Pigeon Patrol UltrasonicPigeon Patrol Products and Services wonder if Ultrasonic sound can kill you? The short answer is “yes”.

The Space Shuttle’s Mobile Launch Platform used to dump 300,000 gallons of water onto the platform during launch, to absorb the intense acoustic energy that would otherwise damage the Shuttle. Giant air horns, using nitrogen gas to produce sounds as loud as 154 decibels.

The question is, is 154 decibels enough to kill you? In all honesty, probably not — unless, perhaps, you were stuck with your head inside the horn for a prolonged period. 150 decibels is usually considered enough to burst your eardrums, but the threshold for death is usually pegged at around 185-200 dB. A passenger car driving by at 25 feet is about 60 dB, being next to a jackhammer or lawn mower is around 100 dB, a nearby chainsaw is 120 dB. Generally, 150 dB (eardrum rupture) is only achieved if you stand really close to a jet aircraft during take-off or you’re near an explosive blast.

The general consensus is that a loud enough sound could cause an air embolism in your lungs, which then travels to your heart and kills you. Alternatively, your lungs might simply burst from the increased air pressure.

High-intensity ultrasonic sound (generally anything above 20KHz) can cause physical damage. Some very low frequencies (infrasound) can apparently cause your eyeballs to vibrate, making it very hard to see.

Pest Control called 21 times?!

Pest Control called 21 times?!

pigeon patrolThe University of Bolton is one of the biggest buildings in the city centre area. Pest control has been called 21 times for mice, ants, and pigeons.  Complaints have been made but no effective method has been proven to keep the pests away.

Last year, The Bolton News revealed pest control workers had been called out to the Royal Bolton Hospital 17 times in 2009, 20 times in 2010, 20 times in 2011 and 31 times in 2012.

The use of Pigeon Patrol’s Bird Netting or Ultra-Flex Bird Spikes could have easily dealt with these pest problems and reduced the amount of calls the pest control workers had to address.

Robot Falcons good at scaring Pigeons?

Robot Falcons good at scaring Pigeons?

Pigeon Patrol robotOnce again, the pigeon dilemma surrounding the Scottish Parliament and its pigeons has risen. An East Lothian Company could have saved the Holyrood Chiefs at least 50,000 dollars from spending attempts in scaring off pigeons from the Holyrood building. The East Lothian Company said they approached the parliament with Mock Falcons, which are electronic birds used to scare off birds, but were ignored.

The use of Bird Free 4-S Gel could have been an inexpensive and easier solution than all combined. Pigeon Patrol’s 4-S Gel is easy to install and when any UV light makes contact with the gel, the birds see it as fire. Simple?! Could have saved more than 50,000 dollars if you ask me.

Amsterdam’s Pigeon Pate!! Yummmmm!

Amsterdam’s Pigeon Pate!! Yummmmm!

Pigeon Patrol MealAs many as 1000 pigeons trapped or killed by a pest control firm in Amsterdam end up on dinner plates as pate. There have been massive amounts of pigeons around the area that they’ve been called sky vermin. This has led to a pest exterminating company to the idea of selling pigeons to butchers. After being caught, pigeons are sold to butchers across the city to be made into pate.

With the use of Bird Deterrents such as Ultra-Bird Spikes or Bird Netting, the areas with great amounts of pigeons could have been controlled or the products could have been put in place as an animal friendly solution.

Pigeons spread disease easily due to the fact that they can travel great distances, harbor over forty different types of parasites, and can host sixty different types of diseases. Without proper health regulations, this dish poses a lot of health risks.

As Pigeons are not protected, the pest control company can catch and do as they please with them. I don’t know how they are treating these animals but let’s hope they are as animal friendly as Pigeon Patrol is.

How Pigeons Navigate Home:

How Pigeons Navigate Home:

Pigeon Patrol came across this interesting story about how Pigeons navigate similar to Pilots.Pigeon Patrol Birds
Pigeons have a limited mental process but despite having small brains, they can navigate extremely well.

Pigeons are influenced by visual properties of the landscape and use landmarks as a navigation tool. If the area is too bland and the same, pigeons have a harder time finding home; I guess that’s why pigeons like to hang out on the roof tops of buildings.

Scottish Parliament: Axe Pigeon Killing Ban

Scottish Parliament: Axe Pigeon Killing Ban

scott Pigeon PatrolThe Scottish Parliament has been dealing with issues regarding the amount of Pigeons surrounding the Holyrood Building for some time now. Contractors sent to deal with the pigeons suggested that the Parliament rethink their non-lethal ban if they want to keep their pigeons under control.

The contractors have used laser pens and hawks to scare the pigeons away but have caused concern from animal welfare groups.

The simple use of Pigeon Patrol’s Bird Free 4-S Gel or Sound and Laser Bird Repellers could have been a great animal friendly solution. By using Pigeon Patrol’s safe and humane bird deterrents, the Scottish Parliament and all animal welfare groups can be satisfied.

Birds of Prey eat Pigeons in front of school children!!

Birds of Prey eat Pigeons in front of school children!!

Ohh. Boy , there is a reason that Pigeon Patrol does not use Birds of Prey as a deterrent. This is reason one!

HAWKS were brought in on contract to scare away the pigeons. The parliament was warned the birds of prey could lead to a PR disaster if they began eating the pigeons alive in front of schoolchildren.Pigeon Patrol Hawk

But the birds or Prey had a closer call in when a “service agreement” document carried instructions to clear pigeons from part of the MSP block, then added: “Shoot pigeons if possible during first visit; if not, a second visit may be required.”

Early attempts to combat the problem by stringing anti-pigeon wire across ledges failed because they just hopped over it. Anti-roosting spikes were first rejected as “visually unattractive”, but later installed.

So this is the answer Kill the birds with another larger bird or Shoot them!!

Thank goodness Pigeon Patrol offers Pigeon or Bird Spikes, Bird Netting, 4-S Gel and Ultrasonics Sound Units to deter the birds!!
