Trapped with no way out – at risk of losing their lives – creating fears of a health risk to people nearby…relax. We’re talking about pigeons here.
Pigeons. They’re just rats with feathers, right? But nobody wants to see them suffer, even if they are trespassing. The birds apparently got caught between the roof of a strip mall and a drop ceiling in a hair salon during a renovation job.
Employees at the Style America salon at Central and Tramway removed some of the ceiling panels, hoping that the birds would fly down and out the door. No luck. The fat little knuckleheads just squat up there doing what pigeons do – which leads to worries about illness and disease from pigeon poop.
“With some basic precautions, unless you’re going to put yourself right in contact with it, there’s really very little risk,” said biologist Justin Stevenson who runs a Los Lunas-based company called RD Wildlife Management. “That’s based on a tremendous amount of science and research, which is what we base everything on.“
Stevenson did say people with immune system issues do need to worry about even small amounts of pigeon droppings. He said that based on his experience, there is probably a way in and out for the pigeons, and people in the building see them roosting and think they’re trapped. He said if in fact they are trapped, he will conduct a rescue operation for free.
A Style America customer said she called City Hall at 311 to get some help, but learned that the city is not in the business of removing pigeons from private property. It’s up to the owner or the tenants to deal with it.

A persistent bird feeder given an Anti-Social Behaviour Order to restrict his habit was feeding pigeons around 40kg of bird seed a day, a court heard.
John Wilkinson, Morecambe’s Pigeonman, can now only feed birds half a kilo of bird seed three days a week under the varied terms of his ASBO.
Prosecuting body Lancaster City Council was granted a variation of an Anti-Social Behaviour Order against Mr Wilkinson, of Cavendish Road in Morecambe.
The variation extends an existing ASBO for a further year to December 2015 and varies the conditions by further restricting the amount and also the times he can feed pigeons.
Proceedings were brought against Mr Wilkinson due to the annoyance and distress he has brought to residents for a number of years by feeding flocks of up to 300 pigeons outside his home and in other parts of the district. The flock wait for their regular feeds by perching on rooftops of neighbouring houses, where their fouling causes blocked and leaking gutters and their noise disturbs sleep.
Mr Wilkinson was feeding approximately 40kg of bird seed to the pigeons each day.
Coun Karen Leytham, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental health, said: “The order does not prevent Mr Wilkinson from feeding pigeons but tries to curb the worst excesses by restricting the amount he can feed and also the times and location.”
The conditions of the ASBO prohibit Mr Wilkinson from feeding pigeons within 100m of his home on Cavendish Road. Outside that radius he can feed up to half a kilo of bird seed between 9.30am and 10.30am on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

PIGEONS displaced by the demolition of the ABC cinema site in Tunbridge Wells have been causing a messy – and costly – nuisance to the neighbours.
Work to flatten the land began in the summer and it was finished last month.
And while the site on Mount Pleasant and Church Road has been left tidy and boarded up, the pigeons which roosted in the buildings have moved next door to the Pitcher & Piano bar and the Wellington Gate offices.
The ABC cinema has stood empty since it closed in 2000.
Rosemary Ehrler, who is building manager at office building Wellington Gate, told the Courier: “The birds migrated to every other building around. My opinion is they should have been culled before they pulled the building down.
“The problem is now we have a situation where the front of our building is getting covered in pigeon faeces and we have had to call in pest control at our own expense. We are a seven storey building and pest control are coming in next week to remove the mess.
“The whole building will have to be cleaned and they are going to put up something to stop the pigeons landing on the building.
“It’s a fairly expensive business. It’s in the thousands. Then the pigeons will just move on to another building.” said Mrs Ehrler.
She said the pigeon problem started as soon as the cinema was demolished.
“There aren’t hundreds of birds but it’s a fairly large flock and it doesn’t take many to create a mess. They tend to like the ledges on the front of the building and the mess spreads down the front of the building and on the windows. I know Pitcher & Piano had their pest control, so they’ve spent moneytoo,” she added.
At the Pitcher & Piano next door in Church Road, supervisor Liam Turner said: “It was when they knocked down the actual cinema. They were nesting in there and as soon as they started work they were everywhere. There must be hundreds of them.”
Mr Turner said the alleyway at the side of his building was a fire escape and it was “very, very messy because of the pigeons” and that the birds were nesting on top of their coolant fans.
He added: “It’s causing us hassle. It will cost a lot of money to get the problem solved. The company has to do it regardless. Our building is quite inaccessible so we’re trying to come up with a plan to get rid of them. We’d need a lot of netting. It’s such a big job, they need to pick the right time.”
Mr Turner said he had had to jetwash the delivery area because the delivery man had complained about it. Even the Town Hall was affected by the displaced pigeons.
A council spokesman said: “There are pigeon deterrents on the Town Hall including some replica owls looking down from the roof. We did see an increase in birds after the cinema came down and installed some additional deterrents which seem to have worked.”

The Bank of Scotland has been cause for eyesore due to it’s pigeon infestation
The Bank of Scotland in Burghead is only open for two hours each week and local people have complained for some time about the ‘eyesore’ with its boarded windows and resident pigeon population.
Janet Margaret Glendinning, who works for a contract cleaning company, has been voluntarily taking on the additional task of cleaning up around the building.
However, she has revealed via a social media post that Bank of Scotland staff advised her to stop doing so.
Mrs Glendinning said that she now hopes the building’s owners will take action on what she believes is a “definite health risk”.
She said: “I have regrettably decided to stop cleaning the pavement outside the Bank of Scotland, Burghead Branch on the advice of the bank staff and of Mitie, the contract cleaning company we work for.
“Although it was not part of the job description, we have done it for many years but things got worse and it has become a definite health risk.
“We are hoping that the owners will step up to the crease and get professionals in.
“We do hope the people in Burghead will understand our situation and be patient should the situation worsen in the near future.”
Currently the bank only use the building on Tuesday mornings from 9.30am until 11.30am – nobody was available to discuss the building’s condition last night.

SEOUL, Sept. 5 (Korea Bizwire) – Piano wire, made for use in piano strings, has found a new, unexpected use in chasing pigeons away so that buildings and structures could avoid premature corrosion as well as bad odor and noise. The Seoul metropolitan city government said on September 4 that it has come up with a novel solution to keep birds away using piano wire by experimentally installing the line on Seongsan No. 1 Bridge and the Seoul Station Overpass.
The solution is based on a simple idea that the birds wouldn’t be able to land on the extremely thin line and would fly away after trying many times. Until now, most bridges and elevated roads have been infested with pigeons, causing bad smell, often unbearable noise, and urban squalor. In some problem spots, the city government tried to install bird blocking nets but found it ineffective as most pigeon habitats were narrow holes or small cracks.
The idea of using piano wire came when a bike rider passing underneath Seongsan No. 1 Bridge petitioned the city government to do something about the pigeon problem and a city officer named Lee Jong-wook at the West Seoul Road Maintenance Corp. under the city government invented the idea after weeks of experiment. He applied for a patent for the idea with the Korea Intellectual Property Office.
Pigeon droppings may cause corrosion of steel parts in the structure as they contain ammonia and acid when they are mixed with rainwater. The droppings are major nuisance to pedestrians walking under bridges and overpasses. The piano wire-based bird chasing device is more cost effective than any other solutions such as the spike needle, bird blocking net, chemical-based bird repellent and ultrasonic bird repeller, which are expensive and often limited in applicable range.
Its installation is also simple, with no need to replace often through the tightness adjustment lever and elastic spring that tightens the line even when the temperature is high. As the wire is made from tempered high-carbon steel, it is durable and can maintain elasticity for a long time.
Lee of the West Seoul Road Maintenance Corp. said, “I thought hard and long about how to address the problem and came up with the idea of piano wire. When I developed the idea, it was winter time, which made it hard to apply any other easily available solutions. I am glad that my simple idea could relieve the problem and make our citizens happy.”
