A courthouse which is being defiled by birds is taking drastic measures to protect itself as staff are planning to feed the local pigeons birth control chemicals.
Staff at the Wayne County court house in Wooster, Ohio, claim they have run out of options to protect the beautiful 19th century building from the ever increasing amount of bird-poo covering it.
After years of other plans doing little to deter the birds from defecating on the beloved building, Wayne County officials say they will add a chemical into bird seed that will stop the pigeons from reproducing.

They say the seed will only affect pigeons, and will cut the population of birds that reside around the courthouse by half after only one application.
The strange new plan comes after citizens began complaining about the cost of repeatedly cleaning the ornaments on top of the building.

A FEEDING ban at St Martin’s Churchyard has already been successful in reducing the numbers of pigeons and squirrels living there.
As the Advertiser revealed in December, the vast population of animals and “less-pleasant vermin” living around the church is causing a significant risk to the much-loved building, with architects warning there is a high potential for stonework to be damaged by large amounts of droppings. Signs were erected around the site that month calling for those walking through the yard to “Keep our wildlife wild and our children safe” and refrain from feeding animals there.
Churchwarden Peter Bunn said that while there is still a long way to go, the signs have so far proved effective.
“The number of pigeons you see sitting on the south roof waiting for food has definitely been reduced,” he said.
“It has got better. I would say that most people are respecting the signs. It’s not everyone and we have had some people we have had slight difficulties with.
“But I think most people understand our problem and we are on our way to solving it.”
As well as the potential damage to stonework, a further concern for church workers is that of squirrels finding their way inside and causing damage to the historic organ or, more seriously, chewing through electric wiring and starting a fire.
Householders in the area have also noticed an improvement.
Derek Benoliel of nearby St Martin’s Court said: “The situation is greatly improved.
“It’s not resolved but there definitely isn’t as many pigeons as there was. In the morning we used to see around 100 to 150 pigeons.
“The people that feed them do it with the best intentions in the world but they don’t know the danger.
“The number isn’t as low as it needs to be. They just make such a mess.”
He added: “We are still inundated with squirrels.
“It needs to be stopped completely. You definitely still see people doing it.
“I have nothing against pigeons as a bird but it’s the damage they cause.”

KILLING pigeons over farmland is ‘necessary to protect crops’, according to a shooting and conservation group.
The Sentinel reported earlier this week that Kidsgrove residents’ lives are being made a misery by gunmen shooting the birds near their homes.
But the British Association for Shooting and Conservation believes it must be done to safeguard crops.
Spokesman Simon Clarke said: “Pigeons are the UK’s number one agricultural pest and the damage they can do to is immense. Shooting them is the only effective way of protecting crops and will increase as harvest approaches. “However, if residents find such pest control a nuisance, they should talk to local farmers.

The Wimbledon tennis championships started today, and if you pay close attention, you might notice an unexpected employee keeping the riff-raff of the courts: a hawk named Rufus.
Every morning, from 5-9am, Rufus patrols the skies above Wimbledon and scares away any pigeons. And he’s been at it for fourteen years.
Lucky for the pigeons, its a humane process. They’re not killed, only scared away. At Nerdist, Kyle Hill explains:
Raptors like Rufus—large predatory birds that include eagles, hawks, and falcons—are nothing to mess with. Whether it is scaring pigeons or throwing goats from cliffs, raptors have the speed, vision, and strength to contend with all but the largest game (look at this eagle’s claw for goodness’ sake). All raptors also have ratchet tendons, which allow the birds to effectively lock their claws shut and maintain enormous grip pressures with bone notches and interlocking tendons.
None of that is good news for the pigeons that Rufus keeps out of Wimbledon, but Rufus isn’t a killer. According to a recent Reddit AMA with Rufus’ handler, “Rufus is a non-lethal deterrent which is based on the fact that pigeons have an innate sense of fight or flight, and they don’t hang around very long to fight when they see his talons!”

PIGEONS are making life difficult for people who say the droppings they leave underneath a railway bridge are a safety risk and so dirty they make worshippers reluctant to go to a nearby mosque.
Now councillors and residents in Maindee, Newport, are calling on Network Rail to install netting to stop the birds nesting.
Many worshippers at the Shahporan Bangladeshi Jam’e Mosque just off Chepstow Road have to walk underneath the bridge to get to prayers.
In Islam, there is a requirement that people are clean before they come into the mosque or begin to pray. But some feel the dirty bridge makes this difficult, while others say the pigeon prevalence is dangerous, as people have slipped over on the droppings.
Abbas Meah, 75, who has lived in Maindee since 1962, said the pigeons were causing problems for people going to mosque.
“People must walk through pigeon mess on both sides of the bridge,” he said. “I have spoken to our local MP. If they just put a net up that would help; that’s all we’re asking for. People can’t pray like this.”
Majid Rahman, councillor for Victoria ward, said: “The walls are grubby with pigeon mess. It’s a health and safety issue. Someone badly hurt their hand as a result of droppings on a metal grate. We’re looking to have a meeting with Network Rail.”
Fellow councillor Christine Jenkins said: “They clean it but as soon as they do, the mess is there again. It’s time Network Rail took responsibility for their bridge. It’s dangerous – someone is going to slip on it.”
A Network Rail spokesperson said: “Network Rail has a responsibility to taxpayers to ensure that it spends its limited public funds wisely.“When looking at the problem and nuisance we know pigeons cause, we look at the scale of the problem and undertake a risk assessment to make an informed judgement. We cannot justify the expense of netting as we don’t believe there is a statutory nuisance.”
