Airport Pigeon Threat

Airport Pigeon Threat

Pigeon Patrol AirplaneNBC 5 Investigates continues to track a serious threat to airplanes over Bachman Lake, on the north side of Dallas’ Love Field Airport.

Last summer, video shot around the lake showed groups of pigeons sitting on the landing lights and huge flocks of ducks and geese roosting around the lake.  On video, one large bird even darted right in front of a Boeing 737 on final approach to the airport.                                                                                                                                        According to a federal database last year, on average, at least one plane per week hit a bird at the airport.  Since 1990, more than 400 Southwest Airlines jets have hit birds or other wildlife while Love Field has never had a comprehensive program to deal with them.

Carter said birds get accustomed to noise.  After all, they’re not scared away by jets screaming over their heads.  Instead, he recommends using trained dogs and falcons to chase birds away day after day.

“So basically you’re giving the birds a choice to be here, where there’s a predator, or a wolf in their eyes, or to be somewhere else where there’s no predator, and you simply shift that,” said Carter.

The airport said it’s now willing to consider the use of dogs and has tested a falcon.

But they’re not using either on a daily basis right now and huge groups of ducks, gulls and pigeons still swarm the area.  Despite new warning signs at Bachman Lake, people are still feeding them.

The airport is seriously considering asking the City Council to pass a law that would allow police to ticket people for feeding birds along the lake.

Ultimately, Carter said the birds will stay unless the airport does something to physically chase them off day after day.

Until then, the danger remains.

Can Pigeon feeding kill you ?

Can Pigeon feeding kill you ?

Pigeon patrol diseasesPigeon Patrol would like to know if feeding the pigeon’s can kill you ?

This is what one reporter says:  The 1960s movie “Mary Poppins” immortalised it with “Feed the birds, tuppence a bag” but beware – what 42-year-old Balwant Singh and many do-gooders in the capital and elsewhere practice every morning – feeding pigeons grain – could lead to compromising their health and hygiene of the surrounding area.

Feeding birds is slowly turning into a new fad in the city. Be it the space under flyovers, or the path for pedestrians and even roads – they have become places for people to throw food. Besides dirtying the place, the flocks of flapping pigeons can cause nuisance and most importantly, pose health concerns.

“The exposure to accumulations of pigeon droppings can cause an allergic reaction called the ‘Bird Fancier’s disease’ – an acute respiratory infection affecting the lungs of an individual,” Vivek Nangia, respiratory medicine hed at Fortis Healthcare, told IANS.

The disease is characterised by dry cough, breathlessness and fatigue and could also lead to fever.

“Diagnosing the problem becomes very difficult. Such symptoms of dry cough and breathlessness are often attributed to asthma, but if there is an exposure to pigeon droppings then the patients should mention it,” added Nangia.

People can also get fungal infections like Histoplasmosis and Cryptoccosis that spreads from old and dry droppings.

“Histoplasmosis is transmitted to humans by airborne fungus spores from soil contaminated by pigeon and starling droppings. While cryptoccosis is typically found in accumulations of droppings around roosting and nesting sites,” he said.

Doctors advise that the droppings should be cleaned immediately. It is also highly recommended that people cleaning it should take preventive measures and the droppings should be collected in garbage bags and disposed.

“People with weak immune system are more prone to get affected by infections from the birds. So they should wear masks and moisten the droppings with a light mist of water to keep spores from becoming airborne and keep them wet,” Manchanda said.

“The food that people give to the birds is also eaten by other animals that share the urban space. Hence they could also be eating the faeces of the birds which is detrimental for their health,” Jaya Simha, managing director, Humane Society International (HSI), told IANS.

Pigeon’s Take over Bridge!!

Pigeon’s Take over Bridge!!

Pigeon Patrol has cleaned up several bridges and know how this city feels:pigeon Patrol Bridge
WICHITA, Kan. -Eric Wittman walks to work from his downtown Wichita apartment. He passes under the Douglas Street bridge twice a day. “It’s filthy. It’s dirty. I’ve been hit by pigeons,” said Wittman.Wittman says the pigeons are causing a stinky problem in the underpass. “They’ve pooped on me twice.”

That’s why he and many other downtown residents want to see some upgrades to the area.

Wittman says people choose to drive between the two areas.

“I think if you were able to get rid of the pigeons, lighten it up, make it feel safe, I think a lot can be done to make this a place that people would want to travel,” said Wittman.

Some of the most popular ideas for the upgraded underpass include interactive LED lighting and event promotions.

One year of Sleepless nights due to Pigeons.

One year of Sleepless nights due to Pigeons.

Droppings Pigeon PatrolWe wish the staff at Pigeon Patrol could have helped this couple sleep sooner. A couple said they have endured 12 months of sleepless nights and deteriorating health due to dozens of noisy pigeons setting up home beneath solar panels on their roof.

Stephen Fishenden and wife Linda, 65, of Wittenham Way in Chingford, say they have lived through “hell” since the birds began to seek above the energy-saving panels, which were fitted by a contractor.Mr Fishenden first complained to Ascham Homes in March last year about the “horrendous” noise keeping them awake at night and his wife’s deteriorating health.

The 65 year-old said: “I specifically asked at the time if we would have any problems with birds and was reassured they would not be a problem.”We are both constantly awake and have had hundreds of sleepless nights. It is particularly horrendous in the morning.”

Following further complaints, the couple said a contractor visited the property in late November and told them he would provide a quote for the scaffold tower, but never returned.

She said: “Mr Fishenden contacted Ascham Homes at the end of March last year about the issue with pigeons nesting under the solar panels at his property. “One of our contractors visited the property shortly afterwards to inspect and recommend the appropriate bird-proofing measures.

Mr Fishenden described the response is a “complete fabrication”, insisting the contractor did not visit the property until nine months later.

We are wishing the best for this couple and hope that they move to a hotel until the birds are vacated.

Pigeon Patrol Releases the new TubeSonic

Pigeon Patrol Releases the new TubeSonic

Tube sonic pigeon patrolImagine chasing away pests like pigeons and loitering teenagers with an ultrasonic device you can control from your computer or smartphone.

While it may seem like some kind of a dream, it was on display at the Buildex Vancouver trade show that’s being held Wednesday and Thursday at the Vancouver Convention Centre West.

Pigeon Patrol is based in Surrey, where it also manufactures the snazzy TubeSonic that uses sound to scare away pests — from winged to four-footed and even the two-footed, teenage variety.

Using an amplifier, speakers, a small computer and wifi interface, the TubeSonic emits frequencies from 8 kHz to 24 kHz. There are 12 different settings, plus more than 100 recorded sounds designed to “startle, confuse, disorient and intimidate.” Frequencies adults can’t even hear are used to upset the sensitive hearing of youths.

It can all be controlled remotely and set to a schedule.

The company also has a variety of other products, like weather-resistant stainless steel spikes to keep birds from landing where they shouldn’t, to an all-natural herb gel that sales manager Andrew MacBain said “smells like death” to birds.

But none of the company’s products are actually deadly.

“We’re very humane,” said MacBain.Pigeon Patrol

There are more than 425 exhibiting companies at Buildex and in excess of 60 seminars. The show was expected to attract 13,500 industry professionals from interior design, construction and real estate management.

Cleaning Up the Pigeon Droppings…..

Cleaning Up the Pigeon Droppings…..

 Pigeon Patrol DroppingsClean-up Procedures

Pigeon feces may contain bacteria and other pathogens that can cause illness. Prevent infection by avoiding direct contact with bird debris while cleaning affected areas. Keep children and pets away from areas which have accumulated bird debris.

Wear personal protection equipment (PPE) when cleaning up fecal matter

Follow these steps to clean and sanitize properly:

  • Prepare a 10 percent solution of sodium hypochlorite by mixing one part bleach with nine parts water.
  • If indoors, mist the area to settle suspended air-borne particles.
  • Soak the area with the bleach solution and leave it undisturbed for at least 10 minutes. This will disinfect and soften the droppings, making them easy to remove.
    • apply and spread the bleach solution.
    • Re-wet the area with the bleach solution if the area starts to dry during the 10 minute soak.
    • Dense accumulations of feces may require repeated applications of the bleach solution.
  • Place the debris into a doubled plastic bag (a plastic bag in another plastic bag).
    • Use a square-nosed shovel or a hoe to scrape up the debris.
    • Seal both bags.
    • Place bags in the outside trash.
  • Using dish soap or laundry detergent, scrub the area with a stiff brush or broom to remove debris from cracks and crevices. Rinse area with water.
    • A power washer can be used for this step.
  • Reapply the bleach solution and keep the area wet for another 10 minutes. Do not rinse.
    • If the treated area receives at least 4 hours of direct sun, this step can be omitted as ultraviolet light has disinfecting properties.
  • Air-dry before allowing people and pets into the area.

This procedure may not remove all stains and the use of bleach may discolor walkways, sides of building, and other structures and may cause damage to growing vegetation. Damage may be prevented by using a commercial disinfectant without sodium hypochlorite. Read label instructions before using these products.

If a sensitive area receives a considerable amount of sunlight, the disinfectant may not be necessary as the sun’s UV light works as a natural disinfectant. Physical removal of the debris is necessary. This method is also considered acceptable for areas with little or no foot traffic.

Keep children and pets away from contaminated areas until they have been cleaned, sanitized and dried.

  • If pigeon debris is in an enclosed area, such as an attic, open windows and use fans to force fresh air into the area before cleaning.
  • Leave area undisturbed to prevent air-borne particles.
  • Never handle a dead bird with your bare hands.
    • Use rubber gloves or an inverted plastic bag to pick up the bird.
    • Place the dead bird into a plastic bag, seal bag and place in an outdoor, covered trash container.
  • Clothes worn during cleaning should be washed separately in hot water. If possible use a disinfectant in the wash.
