A Carlow Councillor says you’d be better off sending out carrier pigeons than trying to make a phone call in some parts of the county.
Charlie Murphy says the worst affected areas seem to be in South Carlow over to the Myshall and Bunclody areas.
Councillor Murphy told KCLR News that he’s written to all of the mobile service providers but there doesn’t seem to be a solution in sight.
He says he has to go out and stand on a fence outside his home to take a call on his mobile and he knows many other people in rural areas are in similar situations.

If you ever needed proof that a fine line divides genius from madness and it’s often indistinguishable and frequently crossed, the foreign media seems to have found it in abundance in our country. The only thing is I’m not sure which side they’re coming down on. Either way the joke is on us.
A report that the police in Punjab have in their custody a pigeon, who they believe came from Pakistan and could be a spy, led to this memorable headline in the Wall Street Journal: “India detains pigeons as authorities fret over risk of a coo.”
Agence France-Presse says the pigeon was found carrying a note in Urdu presumably addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The note reads: “Modi, we are not the same people from 1971.Now each and every child is ready to fight against India.” The Huffington Post says the pigeon was found by a 14-year-old boy who took the bird straight to the police station.
The Wall Street Journal has some fascinating details. The paper says that the pigeon has been x-rayed and some unusual spots found on its abdomen. Two further x-rays followed but Rishpal Singh, an assistant sub-inspector, has said “the authorities still aren’t sure if there is anything nefarious.” Now the army will be consulted.
Rakesh Kaushal, a senior superintendent of police in Punjab, was good enough to explain the seriousness of the situation. He has told the Wall Street Journal: “We thought maybe it’s a spy pigeon. We can’t establish if it’s from Lashkar … it’s better to double check …law breakers are always up to new tricks. Who knows?”
Who knows indeed! With such a bird in hand our security forces need to be extremely concerned about the others still in the bush.
Meanwhile, Pakistani social media has named the pigeon Ghutarghoon Khan and they’re clearly having a hoot at our expense. But this is not the first time pigeons have caused such consternation.
My niece Narayani tells me Ghutarghoon Khan is the second pigeon in Punjab police custody. The first was apparently caught 10 days earlier and remains in detention. I presume the police are meticulously gathering evidence before they file charges. Last year, a pigeon was discovered with a mysterious number on its feathers. At the time the deputy superintendent of police, Hansraj Hans, told Quartz: “We checked for cyanide under its beak.” Garud Sharma, said to be “a top intelligence officer”, added “We are also checking for circumcision.”
The Guardian, which has obviously done extensive research on this subject, has found a lot more than just avian espionage. The paper claims two balloons were recently found in Punjab with similar messages to the one found on Ghutarghoon Khan. Understandably no one is prepared to dismiss this as a mere case of hot air propulsion. In 2013 Indian security forces found a dead falcon fitted with a small camera. In 2010 a pigeon was detained following fears it could be a spy. Unfortunately, the paper does not relate what happened next. I wonder if it was found guilty. Regrettably, the Geneva Convention does not specify how birds accused of spying should be treated by their captors, but at this time of spiralling tension with distrust of our naughty neighbour at a peak, it would be irresponsible to dismiss such reports as a fowl affair or a story fit for the birds. In the pecking order of threats to national security these jailbirds must not be taken lightly.

John Gosden has lined up most of his big guns to fire on Champions Day at Ascot and the Newmarket trainer will be hopeful of bagging at least a chunk of the mega-bucks on offer.
But for punters who prefer a good 20-runner handicap to the glitz and glamour of the rest of the card, it’s Gm Hopkins who is suggested as a decent bet for the trainer in the Balmoral Handicap.
Little went right for Gosden’s quirky but talented five year old in the Cambridgeshire last time out, and, after a slow start and traffic problems, he could only finish 12th behind Spark Plug.
It’s interesting though that Ryan Moore, who partnered him that day and has steered him to victory twice over this course and distance, has decided to continue with the association here, giving his chances a major boost and the fact he is 2lb lower in the weights is another useful bonus. He was far from knocked about as he made late gains in the Cambridgeshire and that sympathetic ride could pay a decent dividend here at an appealing price. Gosden sent him on a solo spin up the Limekilns this week to sharpen him up and he looked on particularly good terms with himself.
Jack Hobbs is another Gosden representative worth backing at a decent price in the QIPCO Champion Stakes.
It’s been a long road back for last year’s Irish Derby winner after his nightmare effort at Newmarket on his reappearance, but he has been wound up steadily on the gallops and his last three or four pieces of work have all been very solid and to the same sort of standard he was performing last season when at his peak.
There are questions to be answered here, once the horse is asked to run through the pain barrier again, but the price reflects those uncertainties and nothing seen on the gallops would put you off his prospects.
Incidentally, while we’re on the Gosden theme, one to look out for next week from the yard is Shutter Speed, pencilled in for Yarmouth. A Dansili filly, she might just prefer the ground there to dry out a little, but there is plenty to like about her judged on home evidence and she could even prove a Classic contender next season.
As advertised here, Shalaa was in need of the run before the Bengough Stakes at this track a fortnight ago, and it was to his credit that he dug deep to win well. He has improved since and must go close in the British Champions Sprint, even if the market hasn’t missed him.
But at a fractionally better price, preference is again for Ryan Moore and another of his old allies, Twilight Son.
The pair found only the mighty Muhaarar too good in this race 12 months ago, and enjoyed their finest hour together when they went one better in the Diamond Jubilee at the Royal meeting here in June.
A below-par effort followed behind stablemate Limato in the July Cup at Newmarket, but he is back in very good heart after a good break, and his trainer reports his work has been of a high order – which might just have helped make his mind up about whether or not Limato was better keeping for the Breeders’ Cup. If Twilight Son can reproduce his best form on ground which will suit, he represents solid each-way value.
Simple Verse has sound prospects of adding the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup to her win in the Fillies and Mares at his fixture in 2015. Like 12 months ago, she heads here after a win at the Doncaster Leger meeting, and while she will have to step up on that form to prevail, it confirms she is at her most effective at the back-end of the campaign. She should appreciate the step up to two miles, and she will have no problem with the ease in the ground.
Godolphin suffered a setback to their plans when the fancied Silent Attack just missed out on a run in the Balmoral and are not that strongly represented on Champions Day. However, Ribchester has been very much trained for the race and he will prove very hard to beat in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.
Richard Fahey has made no secret of the fact he has the son of Iffraaj in prime nick for his clash with Minding, Galileo Gold and the rest, and the royal blues are more than hopeful he improve further on the impressive form he has already shown this season.
Up at Catterick, Machine Learner makes plenty of appeal with his weight allowance in the toteexacta Handicap. A likeable and progressive handicapper, his jockey had a bit of a nightmare on him at Haydock last time, but a change of 3lb apprentice sees Eddy Greatrex drafted in and he’s definitely worth a chance despite a considerable hike in the ratings since his last run. He was spotted among Michael Bell’s string on the Watered Gallop this week, where he looked in splendid order.
Welsh Shadow can prove the most popular winner at Ffos Las by landing theWalters Group Welsh Champion Hurdle. Dan Skelton’s gelding carries the colours of the race sponsor and course chairman Dai Walters and developed into a very useful novice last season. He looks the sort to progress again this term and his trainer is sure to have him nicely revved up for what has been his early autumn target for some time.
Rebecca Curtis can also give the locals something to cheer with Beast Of Burdenin the Volvo Beginners’ Chase. Her Pembrokeshire base was out of sorts for much of last season, a point underlined by this former smart novice hurdler in his three outings. However, Curtis could not be in better form as the autumn campaign moves into top gear, and, despite failing to get around on his two outings over fences so far, this seven year old has the class and scope to see off Whataknight and Minella Daddy.
Copper Kay has always been well regarded by Philip Hobbs and this useful performer in bumpers can make a great start to her career over timber in theTanners E Wines Mares National Hunt Maiden Hurdle. The race has cut up disappointingly from the five-day stage, and she should readily see off her three rivals.
L’Aigle Royal, a winner on his first appearance for his former trainer John Quinn, looks the type to do well for a change of scenery, and should go well of his first appearance for Skelton in the Spire Brewing Company Handicap Hurdle at Market Rasen. Skelton has shown several times in his short career as a trainer that he has the knack to rejuvenate horses after a lacklustre run of form and L’Aigle Royal looks capable of winning a decent handicap off this mark.
Pink Play did her bit to contribute to what was a terrific season for Harry Whittington last term and she can continue where she left off with victory in theSpire Brewing Company – Chesterfield, Yaroslavna Mares Handicap Hurdle. The form of her two successes to end her first campaign over timber looks very solid and her overall profile is of a consistent mare, who should continue to progress.

It was the last thing Rebecca Taylor and her family expected to come across when they went out for groceries, and it was very unsettling.
While she was inside the Truro Superstore on Elm Street last Friday, her husband and 17-year-old daughter spotted a bird they thought was injured. A short time later the poisoned pigeon died in her husband’s hands.
“It looked like it was being electrocuted,” she said. “It was having seizures and defecating. He picked it up and was holding it when it died. It suffered at least half an hour.”
They spotted a small group of people standing around another dying pigeon, and one that had already died.
“It’s cruelty to cause an animal to suffer so long and in such a way,” said Taylor.
Upset by what she had seen, Taylor contacted Dr. Helene VanDoninck, of the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
“I’ve had poisoned pigeons before and they’re usually poisoned by Avitrol, which is marketed as humane, but attacks the nervous system and causes seizures,” she said.
“Their temperature goes up through the roof. Even if someone doesn’t like pigeons, this is not a humane way to get rid of them. “
She has saved some but others died despite her efforts. One was rescued outside a King Street business on Tuesday.
Since last Friday, 10 more dead pigeons have been found in the Elm Street parking lot.
Both Superstore management and property owner David Snook were unaware anyone was using poison in the vicinity until they were notified of the dead birds.
Bruce Nunn, media advisor with the NS Department of Natural Resources, said it is usually illegal to poison wildlife, including pigeons, according to the provincial Wildlife Act, although those licensed under the act may legally use Avitrol to control pigeons.
There have been cases of animals in Nova Scotia being poisoned in violation of the act and the department plans to look into the Truro poisonings.
“Trying to get rid of pigeons this way is useless,” said Van Doninck. “They could poison 100 and more would come back if there’s a suitable roosting spot.”

If anyone knows how to train animals it is Bobby Pollock, pigeon guy of Muldrow. He and his family run and operate Pet Partners in Muldrow and he runs the River Valley Roundup one loft race.
Pet Partners is a boarding, training and grooming kennel that offers 24-hour care because they live on the premise. They have been serving the community about 20 years. Adding to his resume of animal training, he also raises and trains racing pigeons on the same site.
Pollock said that most kids who get involved with pigeons do so by going into barns and getting baby pigeons, taking them home and caring for them. As a child, he said he had climbed bridges and barns to get his baby pigeons.
“It started when I was a child and then I got back into it when I crossed paths with an old friend that used to fly pigeons and he was back into pigeons again,” he said. “This would’ve been around 2000, and so I got back into it and I never looked back.”
Pollock said racing pigeon is a great hobby for the retired and especially children.
“It’s something you can do in your backyard, and it’s a good family sport,” he said. “It’s good for kids because they learn responsibility and affection towards animals, and how to take care of animals.”
There are several different ways to race pigeons but Pollock runs a one loft race which is where birds are sent to him for training and come race time he transports the birds to a location for a certain number of miles, tosses them and times how long it takes them to return home.
“Birds are sent from all over. They can be sent from anywhere in the world. I have birds that come from as far away as Hawaii, and they send their birds here when they’re babies,” he said. “They grow up, this is their home. Those birds grow up, they’re all medicated the same, all fed the same, all trained the same, and they all come home to one location. The birds come back to wherever they live.”
Pollock said that with a one loft race the race is fair because the birds come to one location, are raised, lived and trained at this one location. He takes his training and raising of the birds very seriously and knows precisely the lineage of his personal birds.
“That’s the excitement for me, to see birds that I’ve been creating all these years and they’re still winning,” he said.
Pollock conducts his race in the fall or early winter and contestants will race for thousands of dollars in prizes.
He wants to share the birds with anyone interested and said he will give away birds to those who are interested in racing, or just want them as pets.

NUTLEY, NJ — A would-be pigeon thief managed to fly the coop after an attempted break in at a local shed earlier this month, Nutley police say.
According to the Nutley Police Department, officers responded to a Gerard Road residence on a report of an attempted burglary on Oct. 3. On arrival, the officers met with the resident, who told them that someone attempted to break into the shed where their pigeons are located.
Police said that the hinges to the shed were pried off in what may have been an attempt to enter the structure and take the birds, but entry to the structure was unsuccessful.
Nutley detectives arrived on the scene and took control of the investigation, which included processing the scene, police said.

Homing pigeons have fouled Janine White’s garden, washing and children’s playhouse, got into her kitchen and even made it into her bedroom.
Mum Janine White is plagued by pooping homing pigeons that come into her home and garden after the birds’ owners moved away
The 34-year-old mum said: “I feel a prisoner in my own home – they are defecating everywhere, it stinks and I just can’t seem to stop them.”
She added: “They are taking every opportunity to fly into my house.
“I’m scared to open my windows – I honestly feel trapped.”
She has managed to trap some of the birds in this playhouse, belonging to her daughter
But other birds are still flying into her home, fouling her clean washing and bedroom
Janine lives in Blackburn, Lancs, with mum Josephine, 54, and daughter Mia, one.
She has been unable to trace her former neighbour and does not know what to do with the birds.
She said: “I don’t know whether they want them back or they’ve abandoned them.
“I think they left suddenly.
“I’m scared that if something happens to the pigeons in my garden that I will be held responsible – which isn’t fair.”
Now Janine is concerned she will be held responsible if something happens to any of the pigeons in her playhouse
She now hopes the local council will come and safely remove the birds from her home soon

The Criminal Investigation Department of Jammu and Kashmir has started probe into the seizure of 153 pigeons seized from a Kashmir bound truck coming from Punjab. “The CID wing has initiated the investigation into the case in which 153 pigeons were seized by the police that were being smuggled from the Punjab to the Pulwama district of south Kashmir,” an official here today said. He said there might be possibility of use of smuggled pigeons for the purpose of espionage to pass on secret information to the Pakistan Intelligence Agencies across the Line of Control (LoC). “Police last week seized few cartons from a Kashmir-bound vehicle in which 153 pigeons were being smuggled to the Kashmir Valley,” they said, adding that the pigeons carried coloured marking and suspicious rings following which the case was referred to the CID for investigation.”A message was received that the pigeons could have been used for transmitting secret messages across the border and the action was taken,” they said. Sources however, said that the driver carrying the birds, was produced before the court and fined for smuggling the pigeons under Cruelty Against Animals Act.UNI VBH PY SHS 2014

A Birkirkara resident, who lives close to a property which neighbours claim is the cause of a rat infestation in the area, said that while trying to sleep at night they can hear rodents gnawing through the mortar in the wall.
“You can’t imagine what it’s like unless you were in our position”.
This particular property, on Triq Has-Sajjied Birkirkara, is known to this newsroom. Back in 2014, animal welfare officials who had gone on site told The Malta Independent on Sundaythat some 50 pigeons, three horses and some rabbits and chickens were found in the property. In 2015, a letter was sent to the Police Department complaining about a rat infestation.
Now, it seems legal proceedings have been initiated against those using this property to house the animals. The property is a house of character situated in an urban area, which also contains a courtyard.
A number of residents contacted The Malta Independent on Sunday with their concerns, and the shocking situation they face on a daily basis. The complaints are mainly about therat infestation on the property in question, and videos clips and images received highlight this particular problem. Complaints also mention the noise made by the horse kicking its hooves against the wall and the filth left by a number of pigeons kept on the property.
The video clips show rats skittering across the courtyard in broad daylight and climbing on walls, as well as chickens, roosters and a horse walking around.
One resident who spoke to this newsroom described the concerns he he has, and said that problems have been going on for a number of years, “but the rodent situation has never been as bad as it is now. Whenever I met the people utilising the property in question, I would tell them to clean up. They would do so and it would be better for a while. But with the infestation there is now, I felt the need to speak out. I have given up trying to reach some form of agreement with them as they seem to lack the will to solve the problem.” The courtyard in question, he said, is invaded.
The courtyard and building are quite old he said, explaining that there are gaps between the large stone blocks filled with mortar, and the rats dig through. “At night, we hear the rats digging through the mortar. Imagine, trying to sleep and hearing that at night. It’s not a nice thing to hear. I also have a courtyard, and I don’t even open the door to it anymore,as so many rodents come over from their property. In the evening, as soon as I switch on the lights in my courtyard, you can see the rats scurrying.”
He said that high-up health department officials (tas-sanita) had gone on site, went on the roofs of neighbours and saw the situation. “They were surprised by the number of rats.”
Turning to noise, he said that one week they would have roosters and someone would tell the people in question not to keep them there. They would remove them for a week and bring even more the following week.
A couple of residents mentioned that the pigeons were a real cause for concern, as they cannot even open their balcony doors for fear the pigeons would fly in. Faeces also litter their roofs.
Another resident explained that seeing rats in the street was becoming quite common.
Questions were sent to both Animal Welfare and the Health Ministry.
The Health Ministry said: “Following reports by neighbours who alleged that animals were being kept in unhygienic conditions in a built up area, inspections were carried out on site by various authorities including animal welfare, environmental health and PA. This led to legal action being initiated against the owners of the property on 29 September 2016.”
The Parliamentary Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, responding on behalf of Animal Welfare said: “The case was investigated by the Animal Welfare Directorate, and as a result a formal complaint was sent to the Birkirkara Police Inspector.”
Documents regarding the sale of the property back in 1988 show that it was sold to a person called Derrick James Chick, who eventually moved to the UK. Dr Kenneth Grima, representing one of the residents, told this newsroom that the people who currently usethe property are squatters. However, neither the residents, nor the police can initiate legal proceedings, as only the owner can do that. He said that several attempts have been made to contact the descendants of the owner who live abroad, however so far they haven’t had any luck and have not been contacted back.
The people who use the property in question have now even filed an application before the Planning Authority, which was granted. The application was for internal alterations, with the addition of a washroom.
Residents speaking to this newsroom claim that the notice regarding the application was not visible on the property. “How is it possible that 12 residents never saw this,” one said.
In the planning application, the applicant ticked the box stating that he is the sole owner of the site, but as previously mentioned, their neighbours are claiming otherwise – that they are squatting.
One resident filed a complaint with the Planning Authority last June. “Squatters are using property as a farm mainly for raising horses and pigeons. Lately they have erected two’rooms’ for the pigeons which are visible from my roof, one from mixed material and then another wooden one. I have no idea if they have erected other rooms in these premises since the squatting has been going on for years”.
“This is a sensitive area as it is part of the old core of Birkirkara. My worry is that the premises will continue to deteriorate as the squatters have no respect for the building’s historic value and neither for the surrounding neighbours’ houses”.
In response, the Authority said: “These premises were built prior to 1967 and the Planning Authority has no records or permits relating to the site. Therefore, enforcement action cannot be initiated as regards the use. Moreover, application for ‘Internal alterations and proposed addition of washroom to an existing building’ has been granted Full Development Permission on 06/04/16 and a valid commencement notice has been submitted.”

Suggesting that they could have been meant for terror activities in J&K, the state government has withheld the release of more than 150 pigeons, despite orders from a local court here. The pigeons, being transported in a vehicle from Amritsar to Anantnag, were seized by police on October 5.
The pigeons, which were tightly squeezed into cartons, were handed over to SAVE, an NGO working with the Society for Prevention of Cruelty towards Animals. On October 8, a local court imposed a fine of Rs 150 on the men transporting the birds under provisions of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and ordered the release of the birds.
But District Magistrate, Jammu, Simrandeep Singh, in a written order dated October 11, stopped the release of the pigeons, saying, “I consider it a case of apprehended danger which should necessarily be put through a preliminary investigation by the agencies.”
Referring to the caution sounded by the IAF regarding the use of such non-conventional methods by hostile agencies to cause disturbances, he further wrote, “There could be a possibility of these pigeons being used for facilitating insurgency by means of exchange of messages or by using some hidden devices in their feet.”
“This presumption is being made due to their having different body colours, identification marks and different coloured rings on the feet,” he added.
Accordingly, he using the powers vested in him under Section 144 of the CrPC and ordered SAVE not to hand over the birds to the accused until a preliminary enquiry is conducted into the matter. Pointing out that the order will remain in force for 20 days, he said the release order shall be issued by him only after receiving clearance from SSP CID CI.
A senior police officer said that matter was under investigation. The accused have, however, left for the Valley.
SAVE chairperson Rumpy Madan said the suspicion arouse as a large number of birds were tightly stuffed into cartons using wires, safety pins and other objects, without any ventilation, water and feed.

Jammu, October 16, (Scoop News)-District authorities in Jammu ordered a probe after an Non Governmental organization (NGO), SAVE (Save animals; value Environment) conveyed that the pigeons handed over to them had rings attached to their feet and some suspicious things were written on their feathers.
Jammu and Kashmir Police on October 5 had apprehended three persons and impounded 150 pigeons, being carried by them in banana boxes. They were booked under various sections of Cruelty to Animals Act. The birds were handed over to the NGO for care and supervision.
It is during the care and supervision of the NGO that some suspicious things written on the feathers of the birds besides rings attached to their feet were noticed. They (NGO) immediately brought the matter into the notice of the district administration who in turn ordered a probe to enquire if the pigeons were being to be used in spying purpose.
Since early times, pigeons were being used for spying particularly during war time. Earlier this month, a pigeon apparently from across the border was taken into captivity after a letter written in Urdu and addressed to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, was found attached to its feet by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel near Simbal Post in Bamial sector.

The search is on for new owners brave enough to take it on haunted inn.
The Three Pigeons Inn in Graigfechan, near Ruthin in Denbighshire , was originally a drovers’ alehouse and stead which has been on the site since the 12th century
It was rebuilt in 1777.
Today, the profitable property includes a lounge, bar and restaurant with two private ensuite holiday apartments, a lawned beer garden, outdoor veranda and beer terrace with a large car park and campsite – and around 1.8 acres of land.
The sale is under specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co and Keith Stringer, associate director at the company’s Manchester office, is handling the sale.
He said: “The Three Pigeons Inn is steeped in history and legend – even once hosting Owain Glyndwr, one of the most heroic figures in Welsh history and the last native Welsh person to hold the Prince of Wales title – as well as being home to a ghost or two, resulting in some strange sightings.”
The present owners, Paul Henri and Deborah Wilson-Henri, fulfilled a lifelong ambition in 2011 when they bought the Inn.
They have refurbished the property while maintaining original features that include open log fireplaces and beamed ceilings while also reviving the unique tradition of serving cask ales in jugs straight from the cellars.

I was reading a story in a magazine not too long ago that referred to eating pigeons. I guess back in the good old days eating pigeons or squab was as natural as eating quail or pheasant. I am glad that I did not get to participate in that ritual! I just don’t have an urge to dine on a pigeon.
I am sure that eating pigeons that live in the rural areas is not that bad. They feed on grain just like our other upland birds, so it is probably just like eating mourning doves. I just have these images of pigeons in parks in the cities and they do not look appetizing to me. I may not love to eat pigeons, but I sure do like to shoot them. Over the years, I have had opportunities to shoot the fast flying birds and it is quite a lot of fun. The hunts that took place were set up to eliminate birds that had become a nuisance on a farm. Pigeons are known for making a big mess!
There are other pigeons that I enjoy shooting, but they are made of clay. Shooting clay pigeons, or trap as it is called in shooting circles, is a hoot. Not only is it a great time, it is a fantastic way to keep your shotgunning skills honed. I got introduced to trap shooting my sophomore year at Kansas State University. The same guy that got me started dove hunting also encouraged me to tag along when he went trap shooting at the trap club west of Manhattan on Highway 24. I went with him on a Thursday evening shoot, and I was hooked. It also got me started in the shell reloading mode in order to keep up with the demand for all the shells I was going through.
Back during that time frame, there were trap shoots taking place in Sabetha out at the airport. I would come home occasionally during the fall, and there was usually a trap hunt that would attract a fair number of shooters. There were prizes such as hams or bacon for the winners and it was a great time. By the time pheasant and quail season rolled around, the shooting skills were honed to the point that misses on rising birds were rare. I was coming into Manhattan from the west on Highway 24 a couple of weekends ago and I drove past the trap range, which is still in operation. It brought back great memories and spurred me into action. Due to a lack of shooting opportunities over the years, I can promise you that my shooting skills have deteriorated.
Shooting trap is the perfect remedy for that problem. I plan on purchasing some birds this fall to plant and shoot so I know I need to do a little practicing. Sunday afternoon I gathered up my equipment, and my son-in-law and I headed outside to shoot a little trap. I pulled a Remington Wing Master 870 20-gauge pump to use as the firearm. Adam had never shot trap before, and I was anxious to let him have at it. I have a very simple clay pigeon thrower that tosses up to three targets at a time if you so desire. It was very inexpensive and does the job nicely. A box of clay pigeons is very cheap and contains 135 targets.
For sessions such as this, I use Estate shotgun shells, which are a cheaper shell to shoot if you are not reloading. For trap shooting, it is much more pleasurable to use the 20-gauge. It is more than adequate for the task and actually makes you a better shot. We got set up and began the session. Adam went first and he got himself set and smoked the first target. I was thrilled beyond words. It is not easy to just step up and shoot a shotgun and hit a flying target. We spent the next 45 minutes busting clay pigeons. It felt great to get back in the groove. I am telling you that smoking one of those fast flying clay targets is very satisfying.
No, you cannot eat one of these pigeons, but who really wants to eat a pigeon anyway? With the upland bird season on the horizon, get out there and shoot some trap and get back in the groove. It is a great feeling!

A branch of McDonald’s has been closed in Hull and it appears to have had an unexpected effect on the city’s population of crows.
People believe they are turning violent because they are unable to get their McDonald’s fix.
They claim the lack of scrap food is making the black pests more aggressive as they turn on themselves and other birds such as pigeons for nutrition.
The owner of one business at Kingston Retail Park in Hull said he found a dead pigeon which had been killed by crows.
Paul Rymer said: ‘We came into work one morning to find a pigeon all mangled and being pecked at by two crows.
A murder of crows is believed to be behind a slaughter of pigeons (Picture: SWNS)
‘They were both standing over it and we obviously scared them away.
‘When you get something like McDonald’s shutting for a few weeks it’s what happens, but there’s a lot of related problems down here with pigeon mess and litter that need to be sorted.
‘Something should be done about them.’
Other business owners believes that the crow problem, which includes an increasing number of the birds appearing, said issues with the animals pre-dates the fast food chain closure.
Phil Storey said: ‘It’s been pretty bad round here for a year now.
‘It’s a particular problem because of the litter. Nobody knows what a bin looks like these days.
They appear to have a penchant for McDonald’s
‘They seem to be attacking pigeons and each other. It’s not really putting anyone off coming down here, but it can be a bit intimidating for old people and children.’
Wildlife expert Tim Cockerill described crows as among ‘the most intelligent species’ around but said they did not generally feed on larger birds.
He said: ‘It’s quite likely that in this case the crows were scavenging on the pigeon rather than having killed it.
‘But they are very, very clever and if they see an opportunity to get something they will exploit it completely.
‘They don’t really cause any problems for humans, but there are other similar black birds that they get mistaken for, that can do.’

Pigeons and planes. You might think that the two should avoid each other, but during the Second World War, the birds acted as crew members on the aircraft. To commemorate that at this year’s Rockton World’s Fair this month, organizer Bill Albers put together a special ceremony.
“Pigeons were used in the war as well in Lancaster bombers and that’s how I decided to tie aircraft into the whole picture of pigeons and pigeoneers,” said Albers in an interview with the Flamborough Review.
The Cambridge resident said he wanted to do something to thank the veterans who liberated him and his family when they lived in Holland.
“I visited the (Canadian) Harvard Aircraft Association (CHAA) in Tillsonburg to try and get an idea if they would do a flyover and associated with the war effort,” he said, noting that although it was the second memorial presentation, this was the first time planes were involved.
Harvard trainers took to the sky in a formation and performed three flyovers – one with a smoke trail, one flyover and the missing man formation, in which one plane flies with a smoke trail and breaks away from the others.
“You know how hundreds of aircraft went over to Germany from England and sometimes one of them would get picked off by the Germans? That’s really what that separation indicated. You know, a fallen comrade or comrades.”
Albers noted he thought the veterans in attendance would appreciate the symbolism represented in the flyover.
During the presentation, he spoke to the crowd that included Dutch veterans from Ancaster and Dundas, a NATO vet, the 822 Tutor Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and members of the Royal Canadian Legion.
He told them about how grateful he was and told stories about when he was growing up in occupied Holland – like having to eat “black bread” made of flour and sawdust and how the lack of food caused people to starve and resort to stealing.
He also recounted stories about the pigeons that helped the Allies to victory.
“When I saw probably 100 of our veterans…walking to Germany as prisoners of war, some barefooted so they wouldn’t run away, they walked 450 kilometres…that is etched in my mind,” said Albers.
On April 1945, when the First Canadian Army liberated his home country and brought in food supplies, Albers saw tanks and armoured vehicles that rolled into his town and women jumping on them to give the Allied soldiers hugs.
“It has a special meaning for me and I’ve always wanted to do something for the veterans,” he said, noting last year about 40 vets came to the event and were given special parking spaces and received a tour of the fair grounds.
“The vets appreciate the little bit of appreciation that we show and I’m reminded everyday of my freedom here in this country because of it,” Albers added.
Chris Kruter, a private in the Dutch army during the time when East and West Germany were being separated, said he enjoyed the presentation and loved to see the planes fly overhead. Kruter was among a group of Dutch vets from Dundas and Ancaster to be present at the service.
“That was great, you know, it’s special for the older generation,” he said.
Kruter, who grew up below the Rhine River, didn’t experience the hardships like those in the rest of the Netherlands, but did lose family members during the war. In May 1944, his father and sister were killed in a bomb raid. In September of that year, the First Canadian Army moved in and began liberating the country.
“Not until after I lost my dad. That is when…the hardship started,” he said, adding that he moved to Canada in 1965 and now lives in Ancaster.
It’s for these stories and for these vets that Albers felt compelled to hold a special presentation and one he hopes he can continue to present every year.
“For me it’s a great honour to honour the vets,’ he said. “I sometimes say, ‘It’s not about me, it’s about what the vets did’.”

Battlefield 1 recently suffered a massive leak, which revealed information about the game’s campaign, weapons, multiplayer modes, pigeon mode, and more. With this and everything else we’ve learned, a video from March has gotten almost everything correct, except for one thing that may not have been announced yet: a pigeon mode.
YouTube user AlmightyDaq posted the video before Battlefield 1 was announced. In it, he talked about the game’s maps and modes, all of which were confirmed through announcements. However, the pigeon mode, which sounds like a type of Captue the Flag, has not been confirmed.
“Pigeon functions like a flag that must be held for a certain amount of time before the pigeon flies away towards the base, carrying a message, thus scoring your team a point,” he said. “It’s pretty ridiculous sounding, but take my word for it. Or don’t, and wait until the game is announced or the game mode is shown off.”
This pigeon mode hasn’t been announced or shown off, but some Reddit usersbelieve that the leaked “Possession” game mode is Capture the Pigeon’s official name. We’ve contacted EA to request comment and will update this article as more information is revealed.
Pigeons were used during World War 1 as a way to send messages between bases. During the war, the United States Army used more than 600 pigeons in France.
Battlefield 1 releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 21.

Health Canada has announced that information on inspections of companies that manufacture pest control products will now be available to the public in an online database.
Canadians can search the Pest Control Registrant Inspections Database for specific inspection findings, as well as summary report cards from inspections and information about companies’ history of compliance with the Pest Control Products Act and its Regulations.
The launch of the Pest Control Products Registrant Inspections Database is a milestone under Health Canada’s Regulatory Transparency and Openness Framework and Action Plan 2015-2018.
“Our government is committed to helping Canadians make informed decisions about the products they buy and use, including pesticides,” said health minister Jane Philpott.
“By providing information from pesticide manufacturers in a publicly searchable way, the Pest Control Registrant Inspections Database can also help Canadians gain a better understanding of how Health Canada conducts inspections and what actions the Department takes if requirements are not being met.”
The plan has made specific commitments to provide Canadians with more information about Health Canada’s health and safety decision-making, including inspection outcomes and inspection ratings. Previously, Health Canada also launched the Drug and Health Product Inspections Database in April 2015.
Quick Facts:
- When conducting inspections of pest control product manufacturers, inspectors check facilities, take samples for testing, and examine documents, such as sales and incident reports.
- If a risk to health or the environment is identified during an inspection, companies are required to take corrective actions.
- The Regulatory Transparency and Openness Framework and Action Plan for 2015-18 outlines concrete steps Health Canada is taking to continually improve public access to timely, useful and relevant health and safety information, while still respecting privacy, confidentiality and security consi

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Roseburg animal shelter Saving Grace is starting a program to help control the feral cat population in Douglas County, called Operation Fix ‘Em.
To help get the program started, Saving Grace got a $10,000 grant from PETCO to fund the operations to spay and neuter the cats, and reduce feral numbers.
“Communities that have been practicing trap-neuter-return of feral cats are slowly over time seeing progress on the issue of community cats in their communities, so this is something we’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” said Executive Director Wendy Kang.
Feral cats sometimes come into the shelter, but often don’t do well in homes. So, Kang said the best option is to catch, fix, and release.
“So, for feral cats, really, their best option is to be able to stay where they are, but not producing more kittens, and creating more problems for humans,” said Kang.
Kang said that in communities like Portland, they’ve been doing this program for 10 years and are seeing their feral population decrease.
Saving Grace’s veterinarian says there’s another benefit as well.
“We’re stopping unwanted cats getting a lot of unhealthy issues at home.. because if you spay and neuter them, you don’t have a lot of cats out there that are going to spread disease amongst themselves,” said Veterinarian Steve Frack.
They’ve fixed 46 cats so far, and have enough money to fix about 240 more.
However, they said they can always use more donations and help with Operation Fix ‘Em.
Kang said, “One of the things we need is more people to volunteer and help us with the trapping. We also need to identify more of the colonies that are in Douglas County.”
If you’d like to volunteer, donate, or adopt an animal, you can call the shelter at (541) 672-3907, and visit their website.
