They have urged Redbridge Council to act on the “health hazard”, and claim the underpass regularly has bird dung spattered across the handrails and drain water overflowing.
Kate Crowe, 66, of Kenwood Gardens, South Woodford, told the Recorder: “It’s not very healthy and a bit of an embarrassment.
“There are quite a lot of pigeons who sit on the subway windows.
“When they poo it collects and gathers on the floor and on the handrails. It’s horrible.”
Mrs Crowe claims this encourages people to drop litter in the underpass and also says that the drains leak out over the floor.
She continued: “Some people I have spoken to say they never use the subway and instead opt to use the stairs and go over the railway bridge.
“That’s all very well for able bodied people but what about those who have no choice – parents with pushchairs and those with disabilities.”
The Recorder visited the underpass on Friday, and found rubbish, drain water and pigeon faeces on the floor and the handrails.
Following a letter Mrs Crowe wrote to the council, a cleaning contractor inspected the subway and was reportedly pooed on by the pigeons.
“I find the council is too reactive as opposed to being proactive,” Mrs Crowe added.
“I’ve been living here for over 20 years and never seen anything this bad.”
A council spokesman said: “Redbridge Council is aware of residents’ concerns regarding the subway in question and is taking action.
“We are awaiting quotes to install pigeon spikes on either side of the ledge by the walk tunnels and also for the removal of graffiti and a thorough clean of the floor.”
