Wes Charnock spotted this hot pink pigeon outside St Mary’s Church in Stockport and took pics to post online and find out why it is so coloured.
A pink pigeon spotted in Stockport has been baffling passersby.
The brightly coloured bird was found this afternoon outside St Mary’s Church in the town centre.
It appears to have had half its feathers dyed an impressive hot pink colour – but the reason behind it is a mystery.
Wes Charnock, 33, spotted the bird as he walked through Stockport town centre this afternoon with his sons.
He posted pictures of it online – with people speculating it could have been dyed to be released at a wedding could be a racing pigeon given a distinctive marking by its owner.

Passer-by Wes told the MEN: “I was just walking through Stockport town centre with my kids to buy sausage rolls when we spotted it and they wanted to feed it so it could have something for tea.
“It was outside St Mary’s Church and seemed really tame.
“It didn’t walk away from us like most pigeons do, it was happy to stand a few feet away.
“It did seem tired, so I thought it might have been in a race but I’ve never seen a pigeon dyed pink before.
“I posted pictures online to see what people thought, and they have been suggesting it was used in a wedding or is a racing pigeon.

ALMOST 800 pigeons roosting on Southend Hospital were killed last year.
The hospital called in pest control to deal with the birds, which they said were a health risk. The dead birds were used as fodder for birds of prey.
Jan China, director of estates and facilities, at Southend Hospital said feral pigeons had caused a lot of problems on the site and were a potential health hazard, particularly in operating theatres.
She said: “Large numbers of pigeons present at Southend Hospital have historically created a lot of mess. They have been known to enter the premises via small gaps in windows which can affect the cleanliness of the patient care environment and plant/ventilation rooms which provides fresh air supply to the theatres.
“The trust invests in deterrents to keep feral pigeons away from trust premises as far as reasonably practicable. These installations include netting to deter feral pigeons from entering particular areas and spiking on window ledges to prevent roosting as well as the periodic use of a bird scarer. Any birds that become trapped in netting are released.”
The director said pest control companies broke the pigeon’s necks and the bodies were then frozen and given to wildlife centres.
She added: “All work in relation to control of feral pigeons is undertaken in accordance with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and Animal Welfare Act 2006. Where these methods cause additional problems or become ineffective, the trust employs a licensed pest control company to humanely remove the pigeons in accordance with the Act. 790 pigeons were removed by the contracted pest control company during 2014, and they dealt with the removal and disposal of the birds.”
Lauren Hollas from Southend Animal Aid criticised the action. She said: “I’m quite appalled and shocked to hear this. There must be a more humane alternative to killing so many pigeons. There are ways of deterring them. It’s brutal.
“Even netting can cause issues. They can get stuck.
“The hospitals needs to find ways of stopping them getting in the building or roosting on the building. This is a quick fix, but it must be costing the hospital a lot of money.
“Pigeons are very succesful at breeding, but people need to give them some credit rather than dismiss them as vermin.
They are wildlife just trying to survive and they were a lot of help to us during the war.”

BIRDS of prey are being bought in to tackle a pigeon problem which is keeping a visitor attraction’s most popular residents indoors.
The Deep aquarium in Hull has commissioned a local falconer to scare off pigeons, which have been roosting and making a mess on the attraction.
The attraction’s gentoo penguins have not been allowed out of their new enclosure onto an outdoor balcony because of fears they could pick up avian diseases from the pigeon droppings.
Chief executive Colin Brown said: “The penguins have this area outside where they can go, a little balcony, but the pigeons are nesting above them and they carry a lot of avian diseases, so we don’t feel we can let out the penguins in case they catch something from the pigeon droppings. “Equally we don’t want to kill the pigeons.”
He said they had “pretty dramatic reaction” the first time they tried flying a bird of prey with seagulls which also hang round the building going “beserk” – although the pigeons stood their ground.
He expects the problem to take some months to solve with the help of a five-year-old peregrine falcon and an 18-month-old Harris hawk.
He said: “A number of major events including Wimbledon have successfully scared the pigeons away using this method, so we thought it was worth a try.
“When the falcon and hawk are flown in a specific routine, it alters the pigeons’ roosting and nesting patterns.”

Another slow news day, another bird-themed Japanese Twitter picture making the rounds.
To put it lightly, Japan’s major cities have a bit of a pigeon problem. According to Japan’s National Institute for Environmental Studies, the pigeon (or, holy crap, technically the “feral rock dove”), is an invasive species to the Japanese mainland that now inhabits essentially every speck of land, including, even, some distant islands belonging to Japan.
As with invasive pigeons in other cities throughout the world, Japanese pigeons have largely adapted to an urban environment, losing their instinctive fear of humans, nesting in and among buildings and, apparently, even frequenting McDonald’s.
A visitor to a Hachioji-area McDonald’s on the outskirts of Tokyo proper snapped this photo recently of a trio of pigeons just hanging out at one of the restaurant’s tables, presumably having a chat about how much they love pooping on things and enjoying some fry crumbs and a Coke.
Japanese media and Twitter aggregates picked it up and the photo now has the Japanese Internet buzzing.
While most Netizens seem to be having a quiet chuckle about it, at least some are reacting with genuine concern. Pigeons are, after all, notorious harbingers of disease, including something called cryptococcosis, which doesn’t sound pleasant at all, and one does have to wonder why there don’t appear to be any employees attempting to escort the animals to the nearest bronze statue or something.
Then again, there’s a chance they were legitimately paying customers, in which case demanding that they leave purely because of their feathery exteriors would be asking for a discrimination lawsuit from the pigeons’ lawyer.

Those artificial, screeching bird noises atop the Briggs Building have gone silent, but the reason remained a mystery to the city manager as of Friday morning.
In early March, Hollister officials responded to problems with too many pigeons at the Briggs Building that were leaving droppings all over the structure. The city paid $2,200 for equipment that continuously emitted loud, automated bird calls meant to shoo away the pigeons.
“There’s pigeon droppings everywhere. It’s not sanitary at all,” City Manager Bill Avera told the Free Lance in March. “We talked with some different folks and this seemed to be the most humane way to get them out of there.”
The city installed the boxes in early March. But the hope at the time was that eventually, the speakers could be turned on intermittently while keeping pigeons out of the parking structure.
In the past two to three weeks, those previously constant bird sounds suddenly stopped. When informed of the pause in bird screeches, Avera said on Thursday he went to check out the equipment atop the Briggs Building.
The equipment was there, yet Avera did not have a ladder and could not gain access to the machinery, however, so he had to find out whether someone turned it off or if it may be broken.

He is used by the All England Tennis Club to keep the courts free from pigeons.
His handler is Imogen Davis, of Avian Environmental in Brigstock.
Speaking to the Northants Telegraph after last year’s tournament, which was won by Novak Djokovic, she said: “Rufus is a lovely character, he’s very friendly and is happy to be passed from hand to hand for photos.
“He goes to Wimbledon all year round so it is his playground and he sees it at its busiest and its quietest times.”
Family firm Avian Environmental has been keeping the courts of Wimbledon pigeon-free since 1999.
It also helps control birds at the Royal Marsden Hospital and Westminster Abbey as well as Northampton Saints ground.
Imogen said: “We’re getting busier as people are starting to learn that it’s not good to eradicate an entire species.
“Using birds is an environmentally friendly way of controlling pests, it’s nature at its best.
“We have eight birds so we can tailor our services to different purposes.”
Although Rufus and Imogen do their work before play gets under way they did get to meet Andy Murray last year.
Imogen said: “He’s so lovely, it was really sad how he went out.”
Avian Environmental got the contract to keep Wimbledon pigeon-free after Imogen’s mum gave them a call.
Imogen said: “My mum was watching Tim Henman against Pete Sampras and they had to keep batting the pigeons away from the baseline, which was interrupting the points and not what the players wanted.
“She gave them a call and went along to give a demonstration and we’ve been to 14 or 15 championships since.
“Grass seed is like caviar to pigeons and they’re not fazed by humans so we go along to stop them from roosting because once one starts to roost somewhere you get lots.”
