Halt to downtown’s fake bird noises remains mystery

Halt to downtown’s fake bird noises remains mystery

Pigeon PatrolThose artificial, screeching bird noises atop the Briggs Building have gone silent, but the reason remained a mystery to the city manager as of Friday morning.
In early March, Hollister officials responded to problems with too many pigeons at the Briggs Building that were leaving droppings all over the structure. The city paid $2,200 for equipment that continuously emitted loud, automated bird calls meant to shoo away the pigeons.
“There’s pigeon droppings everywhere. It’s not sanitary at all,” City Manager Bill Avera told the Free Lance in March. “We talked with some different folks and this seemed to be the most humane way to get them out of there.”
The city installed the boxes in early March. But the hope at the time was that eventually, the speakers could be turned on intermittently while keeping pigeons out of the parking structure.
In the past two to three weeks, those previously constant bird sounds suddenly stopped. When informed of the pause in bird screeches, Avera said on Thursday he went to check out the equipment atop the Briggs Building.
The equipment was there, yet Avera did not have a ladder and could not gain access to the machinery, however, so he had to find out whether someone turned it off or if it may be broken.
Katie Helland contributed to this report.

City struggling with pigeon poop, bird carcasses at notorious South Broadway bridge

City struggling with pigeon poop, bird carcasses at notorious South Broadway bridge

A South Broadway bridge has gained a reputation with pedestrians for all the wrong reasons: piles of bird feces and decaying pigeon carcasses.

Hundreds of pigeons have made their home in the railroad overpass between the Newtown Crossing apartments and Tolly-Ho restaurant. They roost in the support beams, they defecate on the sidewalk, and many lie dead in their own filth, left to decay or be torn apart by strong-stomached scavengers.

Pedestrians often must skip, hop and jump to make it to the other side without stepping on something undesirable.

“I hate that bridge,” said Bryon Speach, who walks under it two or three times a week. “People don’t really walk under it unless they have to.”

Urban County Government officials hope that will change by the end of summer, when the city’s Division of Environmental Services plans to erect a metal barrier to keep pigeons away.

“Thank God,” said Clarence Johnson, who works at St. Joseph Hospital up the street. “They need to do something.”

Johnson normally drives to work, but when his car broke down, he was forced to walk down South Broadway under the bridge to the hospital. Johnson said he noticed the pigeons when he drove, but he didn’t know how much bird poop and how many dead birds were on the sidewalk.

“I didn’t know it was this bad,” he said. “My wife won’t go under it at all.”

Five years ago,image1 (2) after a string of complaints, the city’s Division of Parks and Recreation tried to deter pigeons from roosting on the beams by putting metal sheets on the bridge’s underbelly. That kept pigeons from defecating on the sidewalks, but the sheet metal began to buckle and bend under the weight of dead pigeons and feces; some of the metal sheets eventually fell onto the sidewalk.

“Recently, (the metal sheets) have just not been working at all. They were just kind of overwhelmed by pigeon debris, honestly,” said Jennifer Myatt, an environmental outreach specialist with the city’s Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works. “At some point there was just too much, and it was coming onto the sidewalk.”

Since then, the Division of Environmental Services sent workers wearing hazardous-material suits to remove the metal sheets and clean the beams.

“It’s much cleaner now probably than it’s been in a long, long time,” said Susan Plueger, director of the Division of Environmental Services.

Workers now clean the sidewalks every two weeks.

Plueger said the city will probably put up large metal sheets between the bridge’s support beams. Those sheets, unlike the previous ones, would be completely blocked on the sides, leaving no room for pigeons to perch.

“We want our solution to be permanent,” Plueger said.

City officials initially had said they would use pigeon spikes — small, pointed poles that are meant to keep pigeons from perching — but they changed their minds after learning that pigeons can find ways to land around them.

Gary Potts, a member of the Lexington Racing Pigeon Club, suggested using chicken wire to block the pigeons from perching, but he emphasized that pigeons are persistent.

“If there’s a place to land, they’ll land,” Potts said. “Unless they cover the whole thing, the birds are going to get up in there.”

The large amounts of feces and dead pigeons are unpleasant, Potts said, but the area probably isn’t dangerous for pedestrians.

“People don’t have to worry about it,” he said. “They’re just as healthy as any other birds.”

This Town Will Put Birds on Birth Control Pill

This Town Will Put Birds on Birth Control Pill

Pigeon PatrolLondon: Frustrated with increasing bird population in the town. The officials have taken a drastic step to curb the issue by introducing birth control pills to these Pigeons.
A Spanish town is planning to feed its pigeons a special birth control pill in a bid to slash the soaring bird population.
The Catalan town of Badia del Valles will use three automatic dispensers to scatter the required dosage to the pigeon population every morning.
Each pigeon will be fed 10 grammes of Ovistop, a product made of corn seeds covered in Nicarbazin, which acts as a contraceptive for the birds.
The first dispenser was installed on Monday near the town’s Civil Guard headquarters, while the other two will be installed on school roofs next week.
The pigeons will be put on the birth control pill from July until December, the high season for pigeon breeding.
One pair of birds can produce 48 pigeons a year, which has led to an overpopulation of the species in the Catalan town.

Choa Chu Kang bird deterrent trial showing positive results: AVA

Choa Chu Kang bird deterrent trial showing positive results: AVA

Bird deterrent gel, Pigeon PatrolSINGAPORE: A trial involving the use of a gel substance to deter birds from roosting has been successful so far, said the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore on Thursday (Jul 2).

Residents of a block of flats at Choa Chu Kang, where the trial is taking place, are also happy with the current situation, added AVA.

Since February 2015, rows of containers with a gel substance have been placed along the ledges of Block 755, Choa Chu Kang North 5. The gel is made up of a natural extract, meant to deter birds from roosting – which is a common complaint of residents.

There were 100 cases of feedback on bird-related nuisance from the Choa Chu Kang area in 2014, said AVA. But so far this year, AVA received just 10 cases of feedback on bird-related nuisance from Choa Chu Kang.

Said AVA’s Executive Manager of Animal Management (Operations) Department Janet Chia: “When they are going about their night activities, they feel affected by the noise (the birds) are generating. Another thing is that, some of the birds soil the ledges. And it also created a smell nuisance for them.”Bird-control-Gel Pigeon patrol

In May, AVA surveyed residents in the block on the trial. A majority of them found the bird-control method to be effective. Some of them said they want the gel to be a permanent feature.

AVA said it will continue to monitor the trial.

“If it is effective and suitable, in terms of feasibility to deploy at most of the locations with such bird issues, we will work with relevant stakeholders to see how we can deploy this at other sites,” said Ms Chia.

AVA said it takes a multi-pronged approach to manage the bird population in Singapore. This means coordinating with Town Councils, Government agencies and the public.

Besides the gel, AVA also uses of a range of measures to address the bird nuisance. These include enforcement against pigeon feeders and selective pruning of trees to temporarily deter birds from roosting.

Kevin Kiermaier singles in a run, gets attacked by a pigeon

640Kiermaier070415The Yankees and Rays played a wild extra-innings game on Friday night, with the home team getting a walk-off win on Brian McCann’s three-run home run (NYY 7, TB 5). Victory from the jaws of defeat.

The Rays scored two runs in the top of the 12th to take the lead. Outfielder Kevin Kiermaierdrove in the first run of that inning with a single. Once he got to first base, a pigeon attacked:

I guess the pigeon was just sticking up for its team, you know? Most pigeons mind their own business in New York. Mess with the Yankees though, and the birds will get you.

Tough pigeons won’t be scared off by hawk

Tough pigeons won’t be scared off by hawk

Pigeon Patrol

Pigeons in Hemel Hempstead are so tough that even a potentially deadly hawk cannot scare them away.

Council chiefs have revealed that a three month trial using the bird of prey to ward off the nuisance birds in the town centre has not worked.

And it’s people feeding the pests that is fuelling the problem.

A spokesman for Dacorum Borough Council said: “Pigeons in the town centre create a nuisance for many residents and retailers and we are continually looking at ways to manage the population, which is growing because there is a significant and constant source of food for them in the town.

“We ask that the public don’t feed the pigeons as this encourages them to stay in the town.”

The trained hawk is meant to scare off the pigeons and is fed before taking flight so that there is no incentive to try and kill any of the birds for food.

Now the council is investigating other ways to control the pigeon population.

The spokesman said: “The main reason the hawk hasn’t worked is due to the availability of food in the area, as the public are feeding the pigeons.”

Although the hawk trial has been unsuccessful overall, the council, which was unable to give figures on the number of town centre pigeons, reports that the population has decreased but that it is not significant enough to justify the cost of the hawk flights.

Back in 2008, a similar hawk scheme was tried in the town centre but shortly after arriving the bird made a bid for freedom and was reported to be living wild.

It cost the taxpayer £9,000 and also caused controversy when shoppers including children watched in dismay as a hawk attacked a duck.

The bird, worth thousands of pounds, was eventually tracked down.
