The anti-bird netting covering the lotus bed at Echo Park Lake was being removed today a few weeks after a resident complained that the nets had trapped and separated ducklings from their mothers, leading some chicks to die. It’s not clear if the removal of the nets was prompted by the complaint or was already in the works. But one member of the crew removing the nets today said the fabric would also be taken down from the lake’s other wetland areas.
The netting was installed about a year ago after ducks and other birds began feasting on the approximately 20,000 aquatic plants that were installed as part of the lake’s clean up. The idea of the nets was to give the plants time to grow and establish themselves before getting picked off by birds. But no one ever said when those nets would be removed.
Thomas DeBoe, who focused attention on the problems caused by the nets, alerted The Eastsider this morning when he saw the nets being removed over the lotus bed. “Today the lotuses are being freed,” he said.
It’s not clear how the aquatic plants will hold up without the nets but the lifting of the black shroud restores the classic vista of the lotus plants floating on the lake and downtown skyscrapers rising in the distance.

Animal Support, co-founded by Dr. Michael Omidi and Julian Omidi, is a new supporter of MickaCoo Pigeon & Dove Rescue which saves domestic (unreleasable) birds that would otherwise be killed in San Francisco Bay Area animal shelters. In less than seven years, this volunteer-driven nonprofit has saved the lives of more than 600 birds with its avian vet care, foster home, and adoption services.
MickaCoo (http://www.pigeonrescue.org) is a network of volunteers working together to save the lives of domestic, unreleasable pigeons and doves that would otherwise be killed in shelters. Started in 2007 by Elizabeth Young, MickaCoo volunteers have saved the lives of more than 600 birds. Volunteers respond to calls from shelters, vets, and good Samaritans to provide avian vet care for ill or injured birds, long-term foster care, and place birds into qualified forever homes. MickaCoo serves the seven counties surrounding San Francisco.
At any given time, MickaCoo’s team of dedicated volunteers is generally caring for more than 100 birds. The organization rescues all types of pigeons and doves but most of its services benefit a domestic bird called a King Pigeon that is bred for eating (squab) and is sometimes mistakenly released at ceremonies or in a misguided effort to save their lives.. They are not able to survive on their own and have a life span of only hours to days in the wild.

Every time I see many pigeons perched on wires, they are sitting far apart from each other.
The only reason I can think of is that they need space between each other in the event that they have to escape predators fast without hitting one another.
Good theory, but scientists actually have studied the distance between not only pigeons but other birds. They have determined it’s not to make it easier to take flight or land. The birds could easily do that in less space.
Blackbirds on power lines theory is that it’s a self-governing system to prevent conflicts among the birds.
They create some personal space by perching far enough apart that it would take some effort to start a fight with another bird.
Humans do it, too. Think about the last time you stood in line and the person behind you was practically breathing down your neck.
Having your space violated can make you pretty grumpy. And because the person is close, it makes it easy to accidentally on purpose step on their toes.

Over the weekend a couple of peculiar looking pigeons were spotted. Are they parrots? Or are they both? “I have never seen birds with this marking and have not been able to find anything about them online. Or maybe a teenage pigeon got mad at mom and dad and rebelled by Manic Panic-ing her feathers? Or maybe these pigeons are just naturally cooler than the other pigeons? Or maybe someone is breeding parrots with pigeons and one day our streets will be so colorful? Or maybe a human dyed them for an art project.
We’ve reached out to a local bird expert, as well as the Audubon Society for answers, and will update when we know more.

Pigeon Patrol would like to know if feeding the pigeon’s can kill you ?
This is what one reporter says: The 1960s movie “Mary Poppins” immortalised it with “Feed the birds, tuppence a bag” but beware – what 42-year-old Balwant Singh and many do-gooders in the capital and elsewhere practice every morning – feeding pigeons grain – could lead to compromising their health and hygiene of the surrounding area.
Feeding birds is slowly turning into a new fad in the city. Be it the space under flyovers, or the path for pedestrians and even roads – they have become places for people to throw food. Besides dirtying the place, the flocks of flapping pigeons can cause nuisance and most importantly, pose health concerns.
“The exposure to accumulations of pigeon droppings can cause an allergic reaction called the ‘Bird Fancier’s disease’ – an acute respiratory infection affecting the lungs of an individual,” Vivek Nangia, respiratory medicine hed at Fortis Healthcare, told IANS.
The disease is characterised by dry cough, breathlessness and fatigue and could also lead to fever.
“Diagnosing the problem becomes very difficult. Such symptoms of dry cough and breathlessness are often attributed to asthma, but if there is an exposure to pigeon droppings then the patients should mention it,” added Nangia.
People can also get fungal infections like Histoplasmosis and Cryptoccosis that spreads from old and dry droppings.
“Histoplasmosis is transmitted to humans by airborne fungus spores from soil contaminated by pigeon and starling droppings. While cryptoccosis is typically found in accumulations of droppings around roosting and nesting sites,” he said.
Doctors advise that the droppings should be cleaned immediately. It is also highly recommended that people cleaning it should take preventive measures and the droppings should be collected in garbage bags and disposed.
“People with weak immune system are more prone to get affected by infections from the birds. So they should wear masks and moisten the droppings with a light mist of water to keep spores from becoming airborne and keep them wet,” Manchanda said.
“The food that people give to the birds is also eaten by other animals that share the urban space. Hence they could also be eating the faeces of the birds which is detrimental for their health,” Jaya Simha, managing director, Humane Society International (HSI), told IANS.
