The menacing letter, purporting to be from “quality assurance officer” Gassimu Jah, is littered with grammatical errors and orders residents to stop feeding pigeons due to a build-up of excrement on Littlefield Close and Greatfield Close. It reads: “Islington are not prepared to allow this kind of behaviour and will take steps to enforce the conditions of tenancy and covenant which may [sic] severe consequences including court action and could lead to injunction or the loss of your home. “Islington council have appointed a ‘professional witness’ to obtain video and hear say evidence to identify the culprits of this behaviour. No further warnings will be given regarding this issue.” But after being approached by the Gazette, a council spokesman said: “This letter was sent out in error and is clearly inappropriate. We are looking into how it went out and apologise for any upset. “We would only ever use a professional witness in instances where we believe serious crimes are happening or suspected, which is clearly not the case here.” Ryan Ross, who lives in Greatfield Close, told London24: “It seems strange it would say that they were delivered in error. They were hand delivered on Tuesday – I think the council is backtracking.” The 28-year-old added: “The council has delivered letters like this before, with a similar tone. It had a go at me once for not using a parking permit properly. “I never feed pigeons myself, so I didn’t feel particularly threatened by the letter. To be honest, I’ve never even noticed any pigeons around here. “What struck me most was the threat of spying. The people who feed pigeons tend to be elderly, so if this was real, it was targeted at them. Either way, it’s not something that makes you feel welcome.”

There’s a bit of a problem with pigeons in Islington.
Hundreds, nay thousands of the sky rats have been pictured landing on rooftops and in parks around the London neighbourhood.
A council has now written to people in the area saying that they believe the problem is down to people feeding them creating an ‘unsightly mess’.
They’ve even threatened court action that could lead to people being evicted and have appointed a ‘professional witness’ to gather evidence of pigeon feeders.
In its threatening letter, the council wrote: ‘Islington council have appointed a “professional witness” to obtain video and hear say evidence to identify culprits of this behaviour. No further warnings will be given regarding this issue.’
The authority has since said that letter was delivered to houses on the Palmer Estate ‘in error’.

A pigeon club member has spoken of his devastation after 100 of his birds were killed in a suspected arson attack.
After seeing the flames from his Washington home, Bill Scott rushed to Barmston Allotments to try and save the birds he has been racing since 2009, but all perished in the fire.
Crews from Washington and Marley Park spent three hours tackling the blaze on Saturday night which saw the lofts razed to the ground.
Bill, 62, has been told that the incident, which happened at around 9pm, is being treated as suspected arson.
“It’s devastating to get there and see those birds on the ground, knowing I couldn’t get to them,” he said. “There were seventy adult birds and thirty young ones who had only just hatched.
“I live at the other side of the railway track from the allotments. I saw the smoke and could smell it, but didn’t realise it was the allotments until I looked out of the window.”
Though Bill’s birds could not be saved, his son Hayden, 22, managed to save some birds from a neighbouring loft.
The dad added: “Since I’ve left work I’m down here every day. I’m in a racing club and they are good pigeons. It’s devastating because they won’t fly at night, so even if they could get out of the loft, they wouldn’t fly, they just sit there and burn.”
He added: “I’ve been told that it was multiple fires so someone has set out to destroy the loft deliberately. I can’t bring my birds back, but I hope something can be done to stop this happening again.”
In 2012, thousands of pounds in damage was caused when fire tore through the same allotments.
The fierce blaze destroyed years of hard work by proud owners and left the ground scorched and covered in ash. On that occasion, fanciers had been able to save some of the birds.

A rat or pigeon might not be the obvious choice to tend to someone who is sick, but these creatures have some superior skills that could help the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases.
Pigeons are often seen as dirty and an urban nuisance, but they are just the latest in a long line of animals that have been found to have abilities to help humans.
Despite having a brain no bigger than the tip of your index finger, pigeons have an impressive visual memory.
Recently it was shown that they could be trained to be as accurate as humans at detecting breast cancer in images.
Here are three more of our feathered and furry friends who could have a big impact in medicine.
From lab rats to lab technicians
Rats are often associated with spreading disease rather than preventing it, but this long-tailed rodent is a highly sensitive detector that can save lives.
Inside a rodent’s nose are up to 1,000 different types of olfactory receptors, whereas humans only have a feeble 100 to 200 types. This gives rodents, such as rats, the ability to sniff out subtle scents.
As a result, African-pouched rats – commonly described as “kitten-sized rodents” – are being put to work in Mozambique to detect tuberculosis.

Their abilities are being studied at the Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, where trained rats can detect a specific scent produced by TB bacteria in human mucus samples.
When the rats detect the scent, they stop and rub their legs to indicate a sample is infected.
Traditionally, lab technicians prepare slides and examine each sample using microscopy. A hundred samples would take them more than two days, but for a rat it takes less than 20 minutes.
This rat detection method is affordable and doesn’t rely on specialist equipment, which is often lacking in countries where TB is prevalent.
It is also more accurate – the rats are able to find more TB infections and, therefore, save more lives.
Doctor dog – the emergency seizure detector
Dogs have long been considered a human’s best friend – but over the years they’ve really proved how skilful they can be.
Recently, there has also been a focus on dogs that seem to have the extraordinary ability to detect when people with epilepsy are about to have a seizure – even when the person has no idea themselves.
Sally Burton’s epilepsy began as a child and affected every aspect of her life from a young age.
“I could never be left alone,” she says. “I had to be home taught and making friends or meeting new people was difficult. I often felt very lonely.”
Thirteen years ago she got her first seizure alert dog, Star.
“Having a seizure alert dog instantly made my life liveable,” Sally explains.

“One of the first things I did when I first had Star was to make myself a cup of tea, something I had not been able to do in 30 years because of the risks of having a seizure when holding boiling water. I then went into town on my own – again a life-time first.”
It is still not known how dogs can sense a seizure. It has been suggested that minute changes in a person’s gestures or posturing could alert the dog, but people have also thought that a scent or auditory cue might also be involved.
After Star passed away, Sally teamed up with her second dog Robbie. Like Star, he was trained by a British charity, Support Dogs.
The charity has shown they are able to train dogs that are able to provide signals, such as persistently nudging someone’s leg, between 15 and 45 minutes before their owner had a seizure.
Although there is still little other published evidence to back up their effectiveness, the anecdotal evidence for seizure dogs like Robbie is strong.
“When I am out it is reassuring to know that Robbie will give me a 100% reliable 50-minute warning prior to every oncoming seizure I have – so plenty of time to get somewhere safe,” Sally says.
The secrets of cow saliva
Drool, dribble, or spit. Whatever you call it, saliva can be thought of as disgusting. But many animals lick their wounds, applying liberal amounts of the stuff to try and prevent infection.

Studies have shown that there are proteins in a cow’s bodily fluids, including its saliva and milk, that have bug-fighting properties.

Salvia also contains proteins – called mucins – that can work to prevent further bacteria entering the wound.
Experts don’t recommend letting an animal lick your wounds as they could introduce other bacteria, but if you don’t fancy that then, luckily, your own spit also contains antibacterial properties.

Pigeons roosting under the Santa Cruz Wharf were determined to be a major source of the high bacteria levels.
City crews are taking action this week to keep the fowl from fouling ocean waters.
“What we’re doing now is some bird-exclusion work” said Santa Cruz Wharf Supervisor John Bombaci.
Cowell Beach’s dirty water confounded the city for years, and the city’s Cowell Working Group conducted several studies to find a source causing high bacteria levels that made the area unsafe for swimming.
On Thursday, crews were busy installing stainless steel fencing underneath the Santa Cruz Wharf. The fencing extends more than 200 feet, from the beginning of the water, to the end.
“We’re using it to barricade out nesting areas for pigeons down in the transition zone, the tidal area on Cowell Beach,” Bombaci said.
Cowell Beach’s waters exceeded bacteria standards for 200 days in 2015.
“There may be other natural occurring things that we probably won’t be able to control, so we’re looking at the controllable sources, and this is one of the most obvious,” said Scott Collins, assistant to the city manager.
High bacteria levels always spike in the summer.
“The summer is when most people are on the beach. So our goal is to goal is to get all the infrastructural needs met, all the barriers installed, before summer,” said Nik Strong-Cvetich, executive director of Save the Waters Coalition.
The cost for fencing underneath the wharf was $50,000.
Ocean water quality will be tested regularly at Cowell Beach to determine if the anti-bird efforts are making a difference.

MOVE over Ospreys — there’s another bird of prey over Swansea.
Specially trained hawks are being introduced to keep a watchful eye over Swansea Market, where they will be deployed above the roof area of the historic attraction to act as a deterrent to troublesome gulls.
Swansea Council says the nesting and scavenging of gulls has been a problem on the roof area of the market for a number of years, with issues including bird droppings, roof damage and blocked guttering.
And shoppers have even been targeted by greedy gulls attempting to snatch food from their hands.
The task will be carried out by national licensed supplier of bird control, Hawksdrift, based near Builth Wells.
The business trains hawks from a young age, to ensure they are socialised and not a danger to humans, and is responsible for similar work at Aberwystwyth University, as well as taking part in falconry displays, and taking the birds into schools for pupils to learn about them.
Representatives were due to visit the market on Friday to speak with traders and answer any questions they may have about the work – although the date is to be rescheduled following today’s fire at the venue.
Hawksdrift director Layla Bennett said the hawks do not attack the gulls to disperse them, but do so by scaring them.
She said: “A common misconception is that the hawk deterrent works by them attacking or even eating the gulls, but that is not the case.
“It is about scaring them. They will be flying over the roof, to deter them from nesting. Just their presence in general acts as a deterrent. They do not have to attack or hurt the other birds.
“Gulls are becoming an increasing problem in urban populations. They are more confident around people, and they are exceptionally intelligent birds, who will swoop down and sometimes even attempt to take food from people. In places like Swansea the main type you have are the lesser black backed and herring gulls”.
The Harris’ hawks are due to visit Swansea Market around once a week over the spring and summer months, and include 11-year-old Sharpe, sisters Lizzie and Jenny, aged four, and youngster Saxon, who is almost a year old.
Layla said: “All of them are reared in a special manner in order to socialise them from a very young age. They are captively bred and reared.
“They are also trained to get them used to everyday objects and issues they may come across, such as high visibility clothing, hard hats, fire alarms going off and fork lifts trucks.
“And dispersal of gulls by scaring is a very environmental friendly.”
Hawksdrift will provide regular site visit reports and statistics through an online management information system, so Swansea Council can monitor progress.
Their introduction follows completion of recent upgrade work at the market, including refurbishment of the existing barrel roof and renewal of the roof gable glazing.
The award winning venue is the largest indoor market in Wales, and opens six days a week, with more than 100 stalls selling local and traditional produce.
The refurbishment project was funded by Swansea Council and the Building Enhancement Programme, which is supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.
This isn’t about harming the gulls.
GULLS are not only a nuisance to shoppers visiting Swansea city centre, but they also damage the appearance its buildings — and are guilty of fouling the streets.
Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s cabinet member for enterprise, development and regeneration, said: “We recently heavily invested in a major project to refurbish Swansea Market’s roof for the benefit of traders and shoppers for many years to come, so it’s crucial we continue to do all we can to preserve the attraction.
“Gulls have been an issue outside the building in the area of the market roof for several years now, affecting its appearance and causing damage and maintenance concerns. The company we’re bringing in are experts in this area, having successfully addressed similar problems at many buildings in other parts of the UK. What they offer is an innovative, effective, natural and environmentally-friendly solution to an on-going problem.
“This isn’t about harming the gulls in the area of the market roof because nobody wants that. It’s about using highly-trained hawks to act as a deterrent to the gulls and keep them away from the building. Traders will be updated on the effectiveness of the scheme over coming months.”
