feral pigeons pigeon patrol feedingCllr Yvonne O’Neill told a meeting of the town council: “Pigeon excrement is covering the streets in town and people are also leaving dog faeces.

“It’s just atrocious and not a good advert for the town. It’s something I would not want people visiting to see, let alone the locals. It’s not an easy problem to solve but I believe the pigeons and the mess they leave is becoming a public health hazard.

“There must be some way of dealing with this – perhaps pest control? They’re just flying rats.”

She was backed by Cardigan mayor Cllr John Adams-Lewis, who said: “We are working so hard to attract tourists to the town and it’s a terrible sight. When people leave here, you wonder if they would want to come back.

“I have spoken to someone in one of the shops and people walk into the shop with the mess on their shoes.

“I know many of the shops do clean outside their fronts but perhaps we now need to employ a full-time handy-person to help clean the streets? Maybe that’s the only way it is going to get done but how much would that cost on the precept?”

A letter was recently sent out by the town council to local businesses and shop owners asking them to clear overflowing guttering to help alleviate the problem.

“Until we sort that out we can forget the pigeons,” said Cllr Graham Evans, who personally hand-delivered the letters. “We have to get back to the traders and town centre partnership as we often don’t know who owns many of the buildings.”

Pigeon dropping causing damage to Upshur County Courthouse

Pigeon dropping causing damage to Upshur County Courthouse

You might be used to seeing birds clustered on courthouse domes, but for one area county, they’re becoming a real problem.

Upshur County officials say pigeons gathered on the courthouse windowsills and rooftops are doing significant damage because of their droppings.

That matter is so acidic it could damage the courthouse roof and dome.

Officials are now taking bids for measures to keep the birds off the building, and keep the historic structure intact.

“There’s so much history behind the courthouse.  It burned in 1899, I believe it was, and this is the facility that they built, and we’d like to keep it around as long as we can,” said Commissioner Terry Cutright.

Bids for the project will be accepted until February 12, and the commission will open them at its meeting on the 14th.

Man helps thirsty pigeon drink from New York water fountain

Man helps thirsty pigeon drink from New York water fountain

A pigeon perched on a water fountain near a New York City ferry was patiently waiting for someone like Steven Pesantez for help.

Thursday, Pesantez and Mariel Mitkowski noticed the bird at the Whitehall Ferry Terminal in Manhattan. It looked thirsty.

So, they thought it would be funny to offer the bird a drink. Pesantez walked over to the fountain. Mitkowski started recording.

Pesantez pushed the button for water. Surprisingly, the bird wasn’t scared away. Ecstatic about the fountain of water, it started drinking.

After about 20 seconds of bobbing in the fountain, the pigeon took flight.

“It was an awesome moment helping the little guy get some water,” Pesantez told USA TODAY.

This isn’t the only time a pigeon has been recorded looking for a drink at the terminal’s water fountains. In 2017, a video posted to Instagram showed two pigeons sitting in a fountain trying to get water.

New York’s Wild Bird Fund took to Twitter (naturally) to say it’s heard “credible reports that this is a regular phenomenon at the Staten Island ferry terminal fountains, not a one-time occurrence.”

While some commenters thought the act of kindness by Pesantez, AKA “pigeon boye”on Instagram, was “cute,” “incredible” and funny, others also were a little alarmed about the sanitation of the fountain.

If you get a little grit in your water, don’t be too alarmed. The New York City Health Department says pigeon droppings pose only “modest health risks.”

Granddad who died in van crash was ‘pillar of the community who never said no to anything’

pigeon racing pillA pensioner who died in an early morning van crash in Maerdy was a “pillar of the community” who loved pigeon racing.

Malcolm Morgan, 73, died when his Ford Transit van collided with a parked van on Oxford Street on Sunday morning.

He was known locally at Popo and his family say his love of pigeons drove “his whole family crazy”.

In a tribute released through South Wales Police, his devastated family said: “Malcolm was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He has always been a pillar of the community and was loved by so, so many.

“Known as Popo to most, he never said no to anything. His love of pigeons drove his whole family crazy – he was the Morgan half of the ‘Newman and Morgan’ pigeon racing partnership, racing for Ynyshir club.

“What has happened has broken us as a family and we will all miss him more than words. We ask for privacy at this difficult time and thank you all for your kind memories you’ve shared of Mal.”

Officers were called to Oxford Street shortly after 8.30am on Sunday after a white Ford Transit van being driven by Malcolm collided with a parked Iveco Daily van.

Malcolm’s family are being supported by specially trained officers.

Jerry Nelson: Growing up in a barn

Jerry Nelson: Growing up in a barn

I feel sorry for urban children. Most of them seem to lead normal lives, although what passes for “normal” nowadays often means being attached to a video game console immediately after emerging from the womb.

Meanwhile, I’m still trying to figure out how to operate common household appliances. For example, I recently discovered that you cannot cook sliced bologna in a DVD player. This seems like the gross underutilization of a perfectly good laser.

The main reason I pity town kids is that none seem to have access to the one resource that’s essential for a fulfilling and thrilling childhood: a barn.

A barn is commonly thought of as a confinement facility for livestock. But it’s also one of the best places for kids to grow up under free-range conditions. A barn contains a universe of playtime opportunities; the only limit is a child’s imagination.

When I was a mere youngling, our farm had a rickety old barn that was home to a menagerie of animals, ranging from the mighty (cows) to the lowly (pigs) to the clucky (chickens). And that doesn’t count the multitude of freeloaders such as cats and pigeons and sparrows and mice. That old barn sheltered more species than Noah’s ark.

The barn contained its own unique ecosystem. Our cattle and pigs ate the grain that we fed them and we, in turn, dined on pork and beef. Mice and pigeons scavenged leftovers from the livestock and the cats, in turn, operated a booming business that focused on the acquisition of rodent- and avian-based proteins.

We kids knew all about the circle of life long before anyone heard of the movie Lion King.

The main rule of playing in the barn was that there were no rules. My seven siblings and I could do almost anything we liked as long as it didn’t involve getting hurt. “If you fall and break your neck, don’t come running to me!” was the only guidance we received from our parents as we trotted toward the barn.

This lack of regulations was liberating. For instance, we were free to climb the barn’s wall ladder to whatever height we liked. If you were a smaller child, a rung or two might be enough. But if you were a testosterone-addled adolescent, the sky (in this case, the rafters) was the limit.

Driven by juvenile bravado, I once climbed the ladder all the way to the top. Upon reaching the apex, I clambered onto the rafters and glanced earthward. A mistake. I had stared resolutely at the barn’s wall during my ascent. Looking down, I was able to see exactly how high I was. My younger siblings seemed tiny, as if they were little kids. Which they were, but they appeared so much smaller from up there.

I realized that falling and breaking my neck wasn’t an option. Several dozen things would fracture if I fell.

I decided to go for the holy grail. Ignoring years of pigeon residue, I crawled across the diagonal rafter braces until I reached the cupola. I had gazed up at that gothic wooden structure innumerable times. At last I would get to see it from the inside and enjoy a pigeon’s-eye view!

A sweeping vista of our farmstead spread below me. The Holsteins in our cattle yard were pint-sized toys; our Leghorns looked like two-legged cotton balls. A passing cloud seemed close enough to touch.

Peering downwards, I could see the entirety of the barn’s yawning interior: the kingdom of cows and cats.

The game Hide and Seek was invented in our barn. As soon as we noticed that a mother cat had transformed from a furry cantaloupe into a four-legged stick figure, the game was afoot. Whoever found the new litter of kittens was awarded naming rights. We were lightyears ahead of modern-day corporations who expend vast sums for the privilege of slapping their names on impersonal, non-purring sporting venues.

Our Leghorns also liked to hide things. It was our mission to find the clutches of eggs that the hens had concealed throughout the barn’s labyrinthine nooks and crannies.

Some hens were surprisingly cunning, and we wouldn’t find their nests for quite a while. In those situations, we learned to be careful when collecting eggs. An egg might feel unusually light, as if it were filled with an extremely stinky gas and was about to explode. A muffled “pop!” would announce the bad news. So it was that we invented the maxim, “Last one out is a rotten egg!”

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to investigate something. Because I’m pretty sure that a guy can cook bacon in a document scanner.

No incriminating evidence at Wellington house where decorated pigeons were found

No incriminating evidence at Wellington house where decorated pigeons were found

A search of a Wellington property where groups of intricately decorated pigeons were found has turned up no evidence to suggest the residents are behind the bizarre abuse.

The pigeons were found in an open aviary in Kilbirnie decorated with tinsel, trinkets, and paint, during an investigation into the spiking number of birds dying or becoming seriously injured by such decorations.

But it appears the mystery decorator is still at large after the SPCA carried out a search warrant at the property and found no evidence that the house’s occupants had harmed the birds themselves.

“The search warrant found no incriminating evidence that the occupants were responsible for capturing the birds, decorating, and releasing them,” an SPCA spokesperson said in a statement.

“The owners have an open aviary with homing pigeons, and the birds found there last week have also been victim to whoever is decorating birds in the Kilbirnie area.”

The seven decorated pigeons were found at the aviary shortly after the antics of the bird decorator reached news headlines. Prior to the discovery, other birds such as sparrows had been found with tinsel wrapped around them.

Many of the sparrows had died as the decorations stopped them from being able to eat or drink

Since 2015, SPCA’s Wellington Centre have had 30 cases of birds arriving at the centre either dead, or with injuries so severe they have had to be euthanised.

Decorations were removed from the pigeons by SPCA’s veterinary team, and they each underwent a full vet examination.

SPCA’s inspectors will continue to investigate the case, and are calling on Kilbirnie residents to help.

The Way We Were: Leaders get creative to fight pigeon problems

The Way We Were: Leaders get creative to fight pigeon problems

What do you think?

A reptile-themed magic act? Decoration tips of the 1980s? Snake handling on public display?

Would you believe pest control?

What we are looking at is Warren County Commissioner Bobby Johnson on a clear day in September 1988 demonstrating his community’s effort to frighten pigeons from the county courthouse.

Pigeons have a tendency to use such public buildings as regular roosts and restrooms, and they leave a mess.

This was not a new problem. The archives of The Augusta Chronicle make a consistent case that birds, most often pigeons, had been the plague of many seats of local government over the past century.

As this photo indicates, such problems often inspired remarkable measures. Here, for example, plastic snakes were attached to the building’s columns to scare away the birds.

“Bird shoots” aimed at solving the problem seem to have been regular events around Georgia courthouses even into recent times.

The Chronicle reported such an event in suburban Atlanta’s Gwinnett County in 1974. Its sheriff told The Associated Press that several men firing shotguns over several hours had bagged about 80 birds.

Their effort drew praise from Georgia’s legendary Secretary of State Ben Fortson, who said, “That’s the only way to get rid of pigeons.”

Fortson was something of a bird removal expert because he had spent years trying to rid Georgia’s gold-domed state Capitol of starlings, a smaller but more numerous winged nemesis.

Fortson said they tried to use guns, but state-sanctioned marksmen were overwhelmed. There were too many birds and firepower wasn’t working.

But fireworks did.

Fortson rattled their roosts with Roman candles. The birds departed and did not return, he said.

But pigeons seemed more pervasive.

In 1970, The Chronicle reported on pigeon problems plaguing several county seats – Sparta, Washington, Thomson and Madison. Shotguns were usually reached for to solve the problem.

Warren County’s inflatable plastic snakes were only marginally successful in 1988, according to county officials. The same was reported in Sylvania, where Screven County workers were trying to trap the pigeons but found that working the traps was time-consuming.

Taliaferro County might have had the best solution by letting nature take its course.

Screech owls had taken up housekeeping in the county seat of Crawfordville and kept the pigeons away from the courthouse. The screech owls also weren’t as messy as the pigeons.

“I let ’em come and go,” a county commissioner said.

Man Helps Thirsty Pigeon Enjoy Some Water From NYC Drinking Fountain

Man Helps Thirsty Pigeon Enjoy Some Water From NYC Drinking Fountain

A New York City pigeon got a wing up from a kind stranger who turned on a drinking fountain for the thirsty bird on Thursday.

A now-viral video, first reported by the Staten Island Advance, shows New Yorker Steven Pesantez watching with what looks like pure glee while the bird guzzles water at Staten Island’s ferry terminal. His friend Mariel Mitkowski, who shot the video, can be heard exclaiming “He was waiting for you!” in the background.

Pesantez told HuffPost that he and Mitkowski were waiting for the ferry when they spotted the pigeon loitering on top of the fountain.

“We joked about how he was just waiting there for someone to help him out, then we decided it would be funny to record me going over to him and helping out!” he said in an email.

It seems like they had a good sense of what the pigeon wanted.

“It seemed like he was enjoying it!” Pesantez said. “He wasn’t taking a bath, so I’m pretty sure he was indulging in some of NYC’s finest tap water.”

He added that he’s happy the video has been resonating with people.

“I’m just stoked that the world is getting to share this wholesome moment in a time where there is so much craziness,” he said.

The Wild Bird Fund, a wildlife rehabilitation center in Manhattan, noted on Twitter that there are “credible reports” that pigeons sipping from fountains at the Staten Island ferry terminal is actually a “regular phenomenon.”

But it may not be so surprising that pigeons have figured out such a clever way to get a drink since pigeons are a lot smarter than many people give them credit for. A 2015 study published in the journal Cognition found that pigeons were able to learn to sort 128 photos correctly into categories like “baby,” “tree,” “flower,” “dog” and “cracker.”

And while having any animal standing in a human drinking fountain may not exactly be ideal (pigeon droppings do present “modest health risks” to people, according to the NYC health department) the birds aren’t nearly as dirty as some people think they are. Ornithologist Paul Sweet told Gizmodo last year that pigeons are “quite clean,” and actually play an important role in cities cleaning up waste left by human beings.

As for Pesantez, he’s definitely a pigeon appreciator.

“I never understood why people hate them,” he said.

Tom Moore is one of the club’s founding members and is still actively involved. He won an old bird race this year from Macroom (107 miles), beating 947 other birds.
PJ Nangle is another long-standing member and did the club proud this year by winning the Old Bird National from Skibereen (133 miles) competing against 3,577 pigeons from every county in Ireland, north and south.

Along with this, he won three old bird races and two young bird races in the club this year.
The club’s annual awards night this year was held in Carpenter’s bar with 16 individual members receiving trophies.
Donal Begley won the young bird and old bird averages, the old bird derby and the Caulfield Cup. And James O’Connor did very well, too, winning the young bird derby along with two young bird races.

All of the club members would like to thank committee members PJ Nangle and Colin Nolan for their hard work and dedication, which is much appreciated. Special thanks also goes to John Dowling for his sterling efforts in keeping the clubhouse running every week.

This Very Sophisticated Pigeon Use A NYC Water Fountain

New York City’s official bird, the humble pigeon, is ubiquitous, intelligent, nutritious (uh, for hawks) and extremely helpful. But they get really thirsty, especially after eating a bagel. On Thursday, one man decided to give one pigeon a hand by turning on a water fountain.

Steven Pesantez and Mariel Mitkowski were at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in St. George when they saw the pigeon perched on the fountain. “The pigeon was just sitting there and he looked thirsty,” Pesantez recounted. “So I decided to get up and help the little guy.”

Mitkowski filmed the exchange, and Pesantez admitted, “I expected him to stay for a little bit but I didn’t expect him to start drinking!”

“It felt cool to help out the pigeon,” he said. “It was very zen.”

Very zen, and also a much better use of a water fountain than an impromptu doggy bidet.

Dominant debut year for Cooney

Cooney won two Tasmanian Racing Federation races from Beckley Park in Victoria, won the federation loft points, was first and second in the ten dollar ring race out of Tantanoola in South Australia and was the loft point winner for the Northern region of Tasmania.

Cooney said he had background with pigeon racing when he was growing up on the North-West and it was that love affair that got him back into the sport.

“I first got into pigeon racing when I was about seven years old and a bloke up the road from me in Burnie used to race pigeons and I would go up there every day,”

“He actually gave me pigeons when I was eight and fancied them and when I moved to Devonport and I raced three times when I was 17.

“It wasn’t until last year when I worked with a bloke who raced pigeons and got back into them.”

Cooney said he would not have been able to be as successful as he had been in his opening season with out the help

“I was playing golf with Phil Matthews and he said his brother Chris raced pigeons and a week later he got in touch with me.

“He told me to go see Warren Connell (Devonport Flying Club president) and he would give you ten pair.

“Warren would have bred me another 30 and I had a pretty good year on land and it is not a one man operation.”

For young people who would love to get into pigeon racing, there are a lot of good people at the clubs who will help you.

Mark Cooney on the accessibility of the sport

Following the support Cooney received from the Devonport Flying Club to get started, he now owns over 130 pigeons that he trains to race.

Cooney said pigeon racing was actually not an overly expensive sport to get involved in if you speak with a racing club when you want to get started in Tasmania.

“For young people who would love to get into pigeon racing, there are a lot of good people at the clubs who will help you.

“And by helping you, I mean they will get you a few birds and help you look after them and train them if you need help.”

Suspected illegal racing pigeons recovered from trash bin near Wolcott

Dozens of pigeons packed in a cardboard box were found last month inside a rest stop trash container along Interstate 65 in western White County.

According to a story from the Associated Press, Indiana State Police released a statement Thursday about the Dec. 10, 2018, incident. About 60 pigeons were “packaged” in boxes and left as garbage at the rest stop near mile marker 196. They were discovered by Trooper David Vido.

With the help of Kim Hoover, a wildlife rehabilitator from Pulaski County, and Kelly Thomas, vice president of “A Critter’s Chance,” a nonprofit based in Plainfield that specializes in exotic/domestic pet rescues, about 57 pigeons were recovered from the trash bin.

Hoover told the AP the pigeons most likely came from a homing pigeon race, where the birds are taken to a designated location and fly back to their roost. Hoover said it is rumored to have large sums of money tied to betting on when and if the pigeons will return.

Pesky pigeons produce problems in Upshur County

BUCKHANNON — Pesky pigeons have become more than just a nuisance at the Upshur County Courthouse. Their droppings are causing problems with the most iconic feature of the 1899 structure — its dome and cupola.

Commissioner Terry Cutright said, “They are damaging the dome. The feces they are dropping is acidic and we are afraid that it is going to start eating holes in the dome.”

County administrator Carrie Wallace said that comparing photos of the dome and cupola from a year ago to more recent photos is “astounding.”

More pigeons began roosting around the courthouse after their access point to another nearby building was closed off.

To shoo away the pigeons, the commission has tried other measures such as a noise machine.

“The county already purchased a noise machine that was basically guaranteed to take care of the pigeons,” she said. “It has not worked. They basically just moved up a story.

“This is needed to prevent further deterioration of the dome and cupola,” she said. “They have tried other avenues with the pigeons that have not worked. At this point, it’s either install the spikes or have to renovate the dome again in another few years.”

On Thursday, the Upshur County Commission approved a request for proposals to go out for a dome cleaning and pigeon spike installation project.

All sealed bids must be received no later than 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12. For more information and a bid packet, visit www.upshurcounty.org/government/commission–office/bid.php.

“It is estimated that 1,200 linear feet of spikes will be required to do all the locations where the pigeons are perching or could possibly perch on the dome and the cupola,” Wallace said. “There is also the unknown of where the pigeons are going to relocate.”

Maintenance director Greg Harris expects there to be 500 linear feet left over that could do some of the window sills and other areas where the pigeons like to be, including right outside county clerk Carol Smith’s office.

The sealed bids will be opened at the Feb. 14 commission meeting.

The commission also approved a request for bids for the Community Oriented Policing Services camera surveillance project. All sealed bids must be received by 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 and will be opened at the March 7 commission meeting. The Upshur and Lewis County School Systems received a U.S. Department of Justice grant of just over $309,000 to fund the project.

The Upshur County Commission was the applicant for the grant on behalf of the schools.

Commission president Sam Nolte said, “This is a great project; it’s nice that we got the grant.”

Pigeons Rescued From Indiana Dumpster Are Recovering

Dozens of pigeons are recovering after the birds were discovered in a dumpster at a highway rest stop in Northwest Indiana.

Indiana State Police say the 57 birds were packed into boxes at a rest stop on I-65 north of Lafayette when they were found Dec. 10.

Kelly Thomas of the animal rescue organization “A Critters Chance” says the birds were caked in filth and unable to move.

Some birds died of malnutrition, but the rest appear to be getting better, she said.

“They’re starting to preen themselves. They’re trying to flap their wings. They’re gaining strength, they’re perching,” Thomas said.

The pigeons will be placed up for adoption, and she says they make great pets.

“Pigeons are quiet and they are affectionate and smart. They are very pretty. They’re just very good birds,” Thomas said.

Police believe the pigeons were used in an illegal pigeon-gambling race.

Pigeons used in illegal racing dumped in Indiana

Police in Indiana say dozens of live pigeons found in cardboard boxes in a dumpster may have been used in races in which bets are placed on when the birds will arrive at their roosts after being released elsewhere.

State police said Thursday that Trooper David Vido found 57 pigeons in cardboard boxes Dec. 10 at a rest stop in White County along Interstate 65, about 85 miles (137 kilometers) northwest of Indianapolis.

Five were dead and two others died later. The survivors will be put up for adoption.

Police initially said they believed the birds were used in an illegal gambling race where their wings are clipped and they race around a track. Later Thursday, police said the pigeons were unable to fly when they were recovered due to their poor condition.

Political pigeons

Different people have different hobbies. In my childhood rearing and flying pigeons was one of the common hobbies in the down town area particularly. Four five decades before one could see pigeon towers erected on roof tops called as Kotar Adda after every ten fifteen houses and the pigeon flyers would at times remain on roof tops from morning till evening and have there meals also who where considered to be chronic pigeon flyers known as “Kaini Kotarbaz”

These pigeon flyers were known for the sharp eye sight and patience. They could visiuallise any pigeon whether same is male or female even though pigeon was flying very high because the game or trade was dependent on that. Pigeon had their own names like Zag, Chattur, Tichal etc because some males were considered efficient in enticing female of any other Adda while flying to his own Adda so were some females expert in bringing some male pigeons to there own Adda. Every flyer was trying his best to send his pigeons in the sky to bring the pigeons of others to his own Adda through this process and this exercise at times gave commercials dividends also.

Most unfortunately our political class as seen these days is nothing more that these pigeon towers where we see one political figure be it ex minister, legislator, office bearer or worker running from one adda to another that too so fast keeping the possibility of forth coming assembly elections in view. The way pigeon is not loyal to any adda permanently the same way these political pigeons have no principles, ideology, conviction and dedication for the betterment of the people but only and only goal is to grab power and amass wealth at the cost of human blood and in this process it seems they have all undergone invisible plastic surgery of having shameless faces. The result is obvious because this unfortunate State has tasted all the known parties in power who have proved worse than one another in every respect yet brazenly and facelessly again and again go to the people and ask for their votes. Those who swore on the holy book not to take part in electoral politics are eyeing for contesting all seats. Those who gained public support against communal politics after winning good number of seats aligned with the same for the sake of power and worse sufferers were the people who voted them. Those who enjoyed power with the blessings of Delhi throughout are trying now to raise their voice against powers at the centre only and only to hoodwink the gullible people with the sole purpose of somehow to gain power for their vested interests. We are most unfortunate people for not having a political class who is not wedded to any principles and  ideology for the sake of power for which people could vote and trust them that is why none of them are respected by people in the heart of their hearts. Worst kind of human rights  violations a decade before were ignored by the party in power and propagated by opposition and when the same opposition came to power they changed the role and did still worse and party in opposition now started beating the drum.

Those who condemned militancy few months before and paid their respects to those soldiers who were killed in operations by laying wreaths on there body is now after losing power condoling the demise of militants which is the reverse gear of the said political party.

This is the peak season of our political pigeons for running from one Adda to another while assessing the prospects of each Adda to gain power without any remotest interest for the betterment and progress of the people and public also is to be made accountable for not assessing the least evil amongst the class of devils we all are caught in.
