£140,000 plan to redevelop pub halted by pigeons

£140,000 plan to redevelop pub halted by pigeons

redevelopDEAD pigeons are holding back a £140,000 plan to bring Scunthorpe’s former Parkinson Arms pub back to life.

The business on Mary Street has remained closed since December 2014 after fire broke out in the adjacent Tyler’s Bar.

Local property developer Tony Conroy wants to turn the 50-year-old, 100-capacity pub into a private function venue to to be called The Coach House.

Tony has already built apartments on the first and second floors to offer guests overnight accommodation.

But he stopped work during September in a long-standing row with the local authority over the removal of dead pigeons in the neighbouring Tyler’s Bar.

Tony explained: “The pigeons have been dropping through the gutted roof next door. They are a health hazard and it’s not my job to remove them!”

A North Lincolnshire Council spokesman said: “We are aware of the issues with the former Tyler’s Bar on Mary Street.

“Our environmental health officers have visited the site on a number of occasions.

“The site currently poses no immediate public health risk. However, we are assessing what options are available to us to have the property cleared.”

It is understood the pigeon issue has been complicated by protracted negotiations between the owners of Tyler’s Bar and insurers over repairing the fire damage.

Council takes teenager to court for feeding McDonald’s chip to pigeon

Council takes teenager to court for feeding McDonald’s chip to pigeon

feedingA teenager has been summoned to appear in court after she fed a McDonald’s chip to a pigeon.

Lauren-Paige Smith, 19, was approached by a council worker and given a £25 fine for littering.

She told the official that the pigeon had eaten the chip so there was no litter left.

However, she was still fined.

She refused to pay the cash but has now received a letter summoning her to court on November 15.

She is said to be in breach of Section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act.

Lauren said: ‘I was feeding the seagulls and pigeons some of my lunch when a man who worked for the council came out of nowhere and told me I was littering.

‘He asked for my details because he wanted me to pay a £25 fine. I asked him “are you serious?” I was feeding the birds – and they ate all of the chips.

‘But the fine has escalated and now I’m being hauled into court.

‘There’s so much worse things going on in the world. I was only in Swansea because I was doing training for work.’

Lauren’s fine has now escalated to £100 and she is expected at Swansea Magistrates’ Court on November 15.

Her grandfather Lance Brewis, 66, said: ‘It’s madness. Lauren has never been in trouble in her life and they’re summoning her to court for feeding some birds.

‘This is a complete waste of taxpayers’ money. Anybody with an ounce of sense would realise this is ridiculous.

‘There’s needles and syringes everywhere in parks and they choose to fine a young girl for feeding a bird? What a job’s worth.’

Lauren added: ‘I can’t believe I’m being penalised for doing a kind act. I thought it was a wind up.’

The dove tries to win his girlfriend over with flowers, but she isn’t having a bar of it

The dove tries to win his girlfriend over with flowers, but she isn’t having a bar of it

doveDoves are famous for carrying olive branches, but this winged sweetheart is becoming an internet sensation for a sweeter plant delivery.

This feathered Casanova was filmed plucking a white flower out of a pile of garden clippings and scurrying off to present it to his girlfriend.

The dove, which is really just a fancy pigeon, was obviously hoping to make his partner swoon with the classic romantic gift.

But she seems wholly unimpressed by the gesture.

We’re not bird whisperers but we can read vibes, and the look in her eyes says: “This flower doesn’t change the fact that you didn’t come back to the nest last night, Hank.”

You naive folk may think the male dove is a sweet guy, showering his one and only with the love she deserves.

But those of us in the real world suspect something else is happening here, and we think he’s sucking up for something.

Not that we’re implying anything, but researchers investigating the fidelity of pigeon partners found that if a male is separated from his girl for a single day he is ready to mate with a new female.

You can come to your own conclusions about what led to this over the top romantic display, but we think it could be more due to grovelling than courting.

pigeon patrol feedingSANTA MONICA, Calif., Nov. 4 (UPI) — A man feeding the pigeons at California’s Santa Monica Pier surprised witnesses by allowing several birds to perch on his body.

The man was filmed Oct. 27 sitting on a bench at the pier and allowing up to five pigeons at a time to perch on his head, shoulder, arms and lap while he gave them food.

The man eventually removes his hat and allows one of the pigeons to eat out of it.

Cockroaches, Rats and Pigeons Take Spotlight in ‘Pesky Neighbors’ Series

Cockroaches, Rats and Pigeons Take Spotlight in ‘Pesky Neighbors’ Series

pesky neighborsBROOKLYN HEIGHTS — They flutter around your parks. Scurry across subway tracks. Scuttle up your drain pipes.

New York City is home to more than eight million people but that doesn’t include our furry, feathered and six-legged neighbors who have turned the concrete jungle into their own natural habitats, whether we like it or not.

A new three-part series at the Brooklyn Historical Society explores the lives of three of New York City’s “pesky neighbors” — pigeons, rats and cockroaches — beginning next week and running through November.

“Pigeons, rats and cockroaches are in this triad of animals considered a little bit problematic,” said Margaret Mittelbach, co-founder of The Secret Science Club and moderator for the panel discussion on pigeons on Monday, Nov. 7.

What is the city’s peskiest neighbor?
It’s believed that pigeons arrived on the continent with Dutch and English settlers in the 1600s along with their livestock, Mittelbach said.

While they originally nested in the crannies of rocky cliff sides, city pigeons now make their homes on bridges, building ledges and window sills.

“They’ve managed to make a human habitat into their environment,” she said.

The series was created as a way to explore “stories about Brooklyn or New York City that people don’t think about often,” said Meredith Duncan, BHS’s senior programs and communications manager. Organized in partnership with Brooklyn Brainery, the panels will feature authors, artists, historians, biologists, and more.

“Pesky Neighbors” will take place Nov. 7, Nov. 14 and Nov. 21. The first discussion will focus on pigeons, followed by cockroaches, then rats.

Tickets are priced at $10 for general admission.
